Despite what is recommended I had to use it with an extension cord. It works well and keeps the water fluid. Its early in the winter yet (tested to -15C) so I'm not exactly confident that at -30C it will work but so far so good. I covered the cord with a rubber tube (cut it lengthwise) to prevent any curious damage from pecking through the insulation.
This heater is only good to temperature of -10 to -12°C in a wind free and covered environment. Any colder than that the plate of the metal waterer gets a thick layer of ice and the chicken cannot drink. I hope there is better out there.
I looked around and found very few options for my particular situation of having only a few birds. This base does what it is supposed to at a modest investment. The thermostat is energy-saving so that if it is warm enough in the coop, it will shut off automatically. My only concern is that the power cord is much too short especially since the use of an extension cord is not recommended. Also the chickens like to peck at the cord so it would be nice if more protection were available. Other than that, it is good value for the money and provides some peace of mind that the water will not freeze.
Works great so far. -20C overnight and water isn't frozen and is cold, not warm. Watered are elevated to a height the birds any soil the water. $10 cheaper than the local farm supply and free shipping with very prompt delivery.
We have had a mild winter in Nova Scotia but have had some cold nights below zero C. Works well. Our chickens appreciate the fact that it keeps the water from freezing and does not overheat. Only heats when needed
Arrived in time, had it for over a month and nothing wrong so far; it works as expected in temperatures that dip below -20 C on some nights. My rating is not 5/5 because I prefer a metallic base as well, it would last longer than the paper-like cover it came with.
We live in Georgia so we cannot attest to how it would do up north. The only downside of the reason I gave it four stars is because they say for indoor use only. We use it outdoors with a little roof area but I wish it was for outdoor use.
works great, keeps my 5 gallon waterer thawed down to 12 degrees F. Not the sturdiest construction though, the bottom is very thin plastic that I'm concerned will crack in the cold. Also disappointed to see it's made in china.
