SHOOTING STARS is the story of LeBron James and his four boyhood friends in Aaron growing in friendship and basketball on their way to three Ohio championships and one national championship. The title is taken from the junior AAU team that first brought them to the attention of the basketball world. What is admirable about the book is the steadfastness of the players and their determination to win. Also, LeBron's elevation of his friends and coaches to major parts in the narrative speaks well of his lasting affection for them.

What is lacking in the book in what was undoubtedly apparent on the court--chemistry. Buzz Bissinger is a great writer. I love his books. But, Bissinger also has an unique writing style, and trying to merge Lebron's oral style into Bissinger's prose is a failure. You can literally picture Bissinger having the manuscript in front of him inserting descriptions and using vocabulary that seems misplaced. As a reader when you are constantly reminded of the dual authorship by the juxaposition of styles, you know the editor should have stepped in and said "this isn't working."

Still, LeBron's bond with his home city, family, and friends survives in this well-intended, but not quite perfectly executed look back.

Students are required to do a book report each grading period. Most hate to read and usually try to cut and paste from online reviews or summary websites. I let them order from Amazon--a young man asked for this book. He loved it--now all the boys are reading it. There is a waiting list to check out this book--which means the time they are allowed to keep the book is limited, so they are reading more for longer periods of time each day so they can finish during the time allotted. It's really a teacher's dream to have kids requesting a book--and looking for other books on the Amazon website and asking me to order them.

I really liked a lot of the insight into the personal lives of the Fab Five, as they are dubbed in the book. I felt these chapters were really eye-opening, as well as held my attention much more than the chapters about specific basketball games. I didn't feel it was needed to go into nearly every shot of the game. They could simply get into some of the major moments of those specific games, instead. The background stories were really the glue that held this book together. Friday Night Lights was an amazing book, and I had higher expectations going in after reading that and knowing the same author was part of this as well. I am a Cavs fan, and Lebron James will forever be held in high regard by me, not only for what he does on the basketball court. I feel the man, Lebron, far surpasses the sports figure he's become, and this shows his humble, and not so humble beginnings. Overall, a pretty good, informative read.
