You may very well need to trim down the heads of these retainers. However, this is easily done, with a pair of nippers. My silverado takes 9 of these on each door. The original ones were brittle, and stripped out pretty badly. My door panels now fit snug, like new. Buying 3 or 4 at the auto store, would have cost almost as much as this bag of 25. On older vehicles, go ahead and replace them all.
I bought these for my 99 Grand Prix. They are longer than the OEM pins, but seem to fit fine. When I installed the pins to the panel and started pushing them in I realized I didn't work for the door handle through the panel first and had to pull the pins back out to correct my mistake. As careful as I tried to be In doing so I broke several of the pins. I partially blame myself for that, but I would think they could survive being removed at least once. And then of course due to the nature of their design they are self destructing when they are pulled out and strip the teeth of the pin.
They are a great buy at this price. I priced them at my local GM dealership because I couldn't find an OEM match in any parts stores and they wanted something outrageous like $1.50 each...possibly more. I literally laughed at the guy when he quoted the price.
BUT they are what they are. Plastic pins and they do their job. Just make sure you do it correctly to avoid having to buy a second set like I ended up doing.
These panel retainers are at least twice as long as the originals, but once lined up and repeatedly pushed home as you go around the interior, the panel will cinch up. You may even have to come back later after the panel has re-seated and go around again. They are also much harder to get going in the holes, but once you get them started it should be clean sailing. Looks like they have done the job and panel is much tighter than before.
