Secretariat falls flat and is dry
Reviewed in Canada on December 21, 2020
The movie is something of a disappointment when compared to other similar fare such as Seabiscuit which had much more of an interesting human element to it. Secretariat might be factually correct, but on another level is not nearly as captivating as a story. In some ways, it is a rather dry recital of various events surrounding the triple crown races, with very little context or human interest elements. I would actually give it 2.5 stars rather than 3. Even the final race scene, the writers seem to have made vaguely boring by not doing enough research on the race announcement itself except for the one line about "moving like a terrific machine." Overall, the movie comes across as a dry rehash of what was otherwise a rather interesting historical event. Maybe they should have hired Ron Howard for this one - he seems to do a better job with this kind of story.
