4.0 out of 5 stars Installing these has become quite easy for me because I have had to do it ...

I have a 99 Mountaineer. This is the 4th handle I have had to replace but this is the first one I have bought from Amazon. The rest were purchased off ebay and those handles kept breaking. The plastic was so weak. Recently we had a deep freeze and everything became brittle so the driver side door handle broke. I tried to find a metal door handle with no luck. I decided to purchase two off Amazon so I would have a spare. To my surprise the plastic seems a little thicker on this handle compared to the others I bought off ebay. They seem thicker right where the others keep breaking. I have a feeling this one will last longer.

Installing these has become quite easy for me because I have had to do it so many times. The first time you do this you will need to drill out the rivets holding the door handle. You can get a couple small phillips head bolts and nuts to put the new handle back on so it will make your life so much easier if you ever have to do this again. Because the rivets were already drilled out on mine from a previous break, all I had to do was unscrew the bolts holding the handle. I use a tool with a hook on it and a mirror to snap the yellow retaining bracket loose from the rod. Because the window track is in the way with my vehicle, you can't actually see the yellow clip. I use a mirror to help me guide the hook back there and pop that clip loose. After that I simply pull the rod out and start assembly of the new handle. I would have posted a picture of this but like I said you can't actually see the clip without the aid of a mirror.

3.0 out of 5 stars Part eventually worked after trial and error and breaking the first replacement part

Upon opening this item, it appears that it should be easy to install. Unfortunately, it is not easy to install at all!! The holes, on the sides of the part, are oblong and it was extremely difficult to get the pole/post, with the hook at the end, which goes through the holes on the door handle and is actually what the handle pulls on to be able to open the door to your vehicle. The end of the hook is not wide enough to be able to get through the holes and the pole is straight and is extremely difficult to maneuver to connect the parts, for a fully functional door handle, once installed correctly! We had to use a drill to widen the plastic hole, on the door handle, for the hook part, of the pole, to fit through the hole properly and we actually broke the first handle we tried it with and had to order another, before we were able to finally hook the parts together and fix the door handle to proper functionality! We tried installing 2 different door handles made by 2 different manufacturers and had the same problem with each part, because we were not able to remove the pole with the hook from the inside of the door itself to be able to turn it to fit in the hole of the door handle. I would definitely recommend ordering multiple of the part you choose, in case this same issue happens to you during installation!

5.0 out of 5 stars Door handle and a easy fix in case your latch spring breaks

Good if your replacing the external handle. Still having trouble opening the door? Most likely it's the latch spring, attached to the rod connected to the handle( small spring connected to the rod, most likely broke)Easy fix....get yourself a throttle return spring...connect the spring to the bottom of the rod(near the yellow connector)...then the other side of the spring above the yellow connector.....this will help lift the rod a little, in order for you to open your door via the newly installed door handle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Replacemnt Door Handle #2
Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2014

this is my second replacement door handle for 2000 Ford Explorer. the first one (Dorman) lasted about 13 months. this one is about half the price of the Dorman brand. looks about the same. i'd guess that it will probably break at the same weak spot as the original and the Dorman replacement. it takes me about an hour? to take the door panel off, remove the nuts/bolts holding on the replacement handle and then to put it all back together again. NOTE #1: if you are replacing the original handle, you will need to drill out two rivets to remove the handle and then find a couple of 1" long or so bolts/nuts to attach the replacement handle. NOTE #2: the item is NOT glossy finish as it appears in the Amazon listing. it is a dull black, not matt, just sorta dull....

No modifications needed. Slipped right in the hole on my '99, using the arm from my broken handle. Screws are NOT included, so a couple of those and some locking nuts, and I had a new handle in about 10 minutes. The springs are beefier than the stock springs, so I anticipate a long life for this new handle. Which is more than I can say for the original part. For the price, this is an inexpensive and simple fix for the malfunctioning handles that all Explorer owners eventually encounter.

Update- 1/17/13 It broke. Not even on the arm that holds the spring. It broke where the plastic meets the handle itself. The seller, AutoHalo, informed me that the 1 year warranty didn't apply because it was broken "during use", and refused the return.

Another update- 6/18/13
I ordered another one, in case my first experience was a fluke. Nope. Broke in the exact same spot.

1.0 out of 5 stars Black handle, not Green. Breaks after a few months.

The handle here is actually Black, which is fine. The problem is, it only lasts a few months. The plastic piece on the handle that attaches to the metal rod in the door breaks off at the base of the handle. I've had 2 of these and they both ended up breaking after a few months. I've switched to a different handle from another company. Hopefully, the other handle lasts longer.
