5.0 out of 5 starsGreat book!

Great book to unlock your potential. Anyone can draw. didn't tought that way before, until I bought this. Within a week I was able to draw those drawing you see in the pictures. One. Week. And I never drew anything else than a stick figure! (and they weren't good looking either) No need to say I was pretty amazed. Imagine what this will be in a month, or a year! Can't wait.

I recommend this book a lot if you want to get good at drawing. Get it, start practicing, and you'll make progress really fast!

Has a lot of ‘fluff’
This book is AIMED TOWARDS BEGINNERS, but the exercises are good, has a lot of extra long story unnecessary run alongs of text. And has some questionable neuroscience claims

5.0 out of 5 stars If you are going to get just one book to learn to draw get this book

This book teaches you how to draw. It's not just simple techniques but rather concepts and principles. The pre and post after going through the book can be very dramatic. I don't want to say it's another way of drawing, but rather it's an education in how to draw properly.

For example one of the bigger lessons from this book is to look at negative space whereas most people look at the outline of objects. This might seem like a simple and useless difference but the implications are significant and can have a dramatic impact on your drawing abilities.

I've had several people recommend it to me, but recently a professional artists strongly recommended it, so I finally took the plunge and ordered and read it. I've since started to recommend it to others myself because of how good it is. If you're going to read one book on drawing, this would be it. The fundamentals in this book will allow you to draw just about anything.

I also recommend the workbook that comes with it. Yes you can probably do it from the book, but I found the workbook makes it easier to follow the tasks.

Lastly, the fact that the author asks you to draw pre and post pictures because there should be a noticeable difference, well this says a lot ;)

5.0 out of 5 stars Good way to learn!

I’ve just started this “course” and so far it’s been very easy to follow. The fact you are required to complete tasks between reading makes this a very engaging way to learn. You read and you practice what you’ve just learned. No long, boring, in-depth rambles that make you fall asleep; just read and do at your own pace!

4.0 out of 5 stars awesome book, video content doesn't work

I would give this book 5 stars, however embedded video content wasn't available 'for my device', which is android 6.0.1 on my nexus 5 phone and nvidia shield tablet (up to date as of today). Wouldn't even work on my PC. Amazon verified the compatibility issue, pulled it off the website and has contacted the publisher. As soon as it starts working, I'll update the review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cover is not attached to the book

The content of this book is excellent, but on the hardcover edition, the printed part of the front and back covers is actually a sleeve that goes over the book, meaning you have to take it off to read it. Very uncomfortable. Took off a star for this reason. I returned this and bought a paperback copy.

I taught at the School of Design at a Community College many years ago, using the first edition of this book. It was great then, and it has only gotten better. Useful for anyone who wants to get up to light speed at drawing

4.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for beginners
Reviewed in Canada on November 8, 2013

This book makes an excellent first step into the world of drawing for anyone who lacks experience. People generally are more often attracted to rendering realistic images when starting out and this book facilitates just that. It is clear, concise, and offers many demonstrations as to executing a variety of techniques. For those with a higher skill level, it still has much to offer by solidifying the foundations already obtained in art. In that respect, it may also be restrictive in exploring different ways of depicting ideas therefore limiting creativity.
