I just couldn't get into this book. It was very simplistic and had suggestions that are rather "no brainer" ones that anyone who tries to stay healthy, would already be doing. I returned my copy for a refund.

Very unrealistic. They say for someone to form a habit it takes 21 days and this lady wants you to develop 30 new habits in 30 days lol what a joke!

My Wife saw Kathy Preston on the Ellen show and watched the segment on The Lean and wanted to get this book right away. I bought it from Amazon and it quickly arrived.

I dont want to give anythign away but the basic premise of the book is to make small daily changes in your eating habits to make life long changes down the road. The idea being that if you jump into a diet and make big lifestyle changes all at once, it is challenging and discouraging, but doing them slowly and at a more suited pace to you will provide lasting effects with you barely noticing you are making changes.

The book is broken down into days. Day one do this. Day two, do what you did on day 1 and add this. Day three, do what you did on days 1 and 2 now add this etc.

THE GOOD

We both lost weight. 15 lbs over the course of a few months making these small changes. And we didnt excercize and only followed what we felt comfortable following fromt the book (explination to follow)

Permenent eating changes. We now eat only whole grains, and follow many of the guidlines in the book still and feel much better although we arent really trying to loose more weight.

The author is very uplifting and gives facts on various things and makes you really think twice about what you are putting in your body. In addition there are daily reminders of what you should be doing and recipes to boot!

We have found many new foods that we enjoy and have found that whole grains and the things she tells you to eat keep you full more much longer and sustain you for a good portion of the day unlike a lot of the white carbs and empty calories most of us pack in on a dialy basis.

THE BAD

The author is vegan. Now this in itself is not a bad thing BUT ultimatley she is eliminating meat from your diet. My wife and I were not completley comfortable with that, but we did change our habits to include small amounts of fish and lean meat which has been a great change. So be prepared for that. It gets a bit preachy and I felt like she was forcing veganism on people as she didnt give any alternatives.

Some of the things she tells you to buy can get expensive. This diet can get a bit pricey towards the end. This is coming from a guy who woudl rather shop at Aldi than Trader Joes, so keep that in mind. Its all relative. I am Mr. Frugal but found that shelling out the extra cash for better quality food has really helped to maintain a better lifestyle. And the weight has stayed off almost a year later!!

This book is so simple and the reason I like it so much. So easy to read...just take 15 minutes of your day to read the few pages for that day's "addition" to the program and then the hardest part...applying it!! As usual no matter how much you learn and how many good intentions you have there is only one YOU who can do the actual work.
We all know the importance of drinking water but I like how the author digs deeper into the why's of this fact and the many other interesting topics/food products she brings to the table. Some things are not new ideas to me but some were.Overall it's a very light-hearted, positive way to read about some things us "less-disciplined" folks would rather not take the time or energy to do. :-)
As I've mentioned, it's one thing to understand what is/is not good for you but another to actually do it...that being said I suggest going into this book with the mindframe to really be committed to following through. I can admit I struggle with this in general and found myself skipping around in this book, doing some of the things and not the others. I suppose that any positive change is better than none but I can say I do believe this book's guidance would lead to some great health benefits the more you can follow it's daily suggestions.
I'm not vegetarian at this point but certainly understand all the health, environmental, moral, etc. reasons to live such a lifestyle so was not at all offended by the authors notes affirming this. I think it's important for everyone to keep an open mind and it never hurts to try something to see if it fits you personally or not...I know from my own experience whenever I have gone on any variation of a low-sugar, low-dairy or no red meat diet I feel better, lighter, have better digestion, etc. so what's the harm in entertaining a vegan diet if only for a week or two just to try it?? I didn't get the impression the author was "sneaking in" this info or had a hidden agenda by any means.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Lean

The Lean is an amazing book I did exactly as it said following the 30 day challenge. Not only do I not feel hungry or even want to snack in between meals but I feel less blotted. My stomach has gone down. I have no problem drinking the water and it has made my skin clearer and generally I feel full with no cravings towards sweet things. If I do have something sweet on the odd occasion I only eat 1 I don't feel that I have to eat the whole packet. As for swapping meat and other animal products this was not a hardship. I just choose more vegetables and fruit. I love having the nuts. I have loads more vitality and I have more energy.
I would definitely recommend this book to people who not only want to lose weight but just to feel better and have more energy. I also lost a couple of kilos but I wasn't too overweight before I read this book. The reason why I got this book and did what it said was because I didn't have alot of energy and my stomach always felt blotted. I will definitely be continuing this way of eating for the rest of my life. I feel and look so much better thanks to The Lean.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Simple Approach to Getting Lean
Reviewed in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ on June 6, 2012

This 332-page book is composed of two parts: a 30-day, one-step-a-day cumulative plan as well as an extensive appendix with nearly 100 pages of recipes and resources. Each of the 30 items in the first part of Kathy Freston's book deals with some aspect of diet or lifestyle (including mind, body, and spirit). Every one which is relatively simple, but Kathy provides a wealth of information to explain her reasoning and still manages to convey all the facts, research, and science in an easy-to-read and conversational manner with a good dose of humor. Unlike a lot of other "diet" books, Kathy doesn't suggest that you embrace all 30 steps on day one, but she urges readers to "lean" into each one, a day at a time. Several of the items deal with the need to transition to a plant-based diet. Rather than make some uneasy with suggesting a quick switch to a compassionate vegan diet, Kathy leans them into the same place by systematically eliminating animal-sourced food and replacing it with delicious plant-based options. She shows that a plant-based diet is good for the body, the environment, and animals.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Results!!!

I purchased this book about three weeks ago with same skepticism I have about every diet "help" book. To my surprise, I couldn't put it down. Kathy encourages you to follow her program step by step over a thirty day period. I kind of followed it but with my own modifications. I stopped eating all meat but I do have the occasional fish because I LOVE sushi. I traded cow's milk for soy, and regular butter for Earth Balance (vegan butter at any grocery store). Most of my food intake consists of vegetables, brown rice, whole wheat pasta and bread, fruits, nuts and beans. If I'm at a restaurant and something I order has a little cheese, I still eat it. But the changes I've made have given me unbelievable results. I'm on day 14 of my journey and have dropped 9.7 pounds. The weight really is flying off. I can't wait to get up and make my new exciting foods and then weigh myself every few days. I would suggest the cook book, "Chloe's Kitchen" for AWESOME vegan recipes. Good luck!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Transition Made Easy

I am so grateful that my trainer introduced me to this book! I had been challenging myself physically for 6 months before hearing about this book and just felt led to challenge myself more. Kathy Freston made it so easy to shift from animal products to vegan cuisine. Unlike most diet plans where they tell you simply "don't eat this or that" with no real direction as to what you should eat, The Lean starts you filling up on healthy options; by the time you have to remove animal products from your diet you are already satisfied with the options you have previously been given, making it easy to let go of the unhealthy ones. This book has made transitioning very easy. I would recommend this to anyone who just wants a challenge or wants to totally change their lifestyle around.
The only reason I've given this book 4 of 5 stars is because I would have liked to see more recipes in the book; still a fair amount to start you off, though.
