Cute but lacking some sense

The story and characters are interesting and I enjoyed the funny, ultra casual first person telling of the 13 year old main character. There were a few drawbacks that made this book just ok.

1. Main characters doing incredibly dangerous things without thought. If the 13 year old is smart enough to leave out food in a place herbivores will find it, why is she stupid enough to think she has to get right up to carnivores to give them food? Herbivores won't eat humans, carnivores will -- and this barely enters her head the first time, and then she does it AGAIN after nearly getting eaten the first time. Really?

2. The rules of the telepathic connection weren't well thought out/worked out. Distance seemed to affect it, except when it didn't. Strength/urgency of emotion seemed to affect it, except when it didn't. Ex. She didn't have any control over her gift so she's feeling every feeling/impression of the wild horses miles from the house but from the horses right next to her, including the one she's riding, there's nothing except when they want to "talk" to each other.

3. The dog is old and crippled, but at the end of the book, is the sole protection against a wolf this girl brings with her while she breaks a promise to her mother regarding safety and suddenly, the dog is young and hale and acting like it's in its prime.

There's a few other inconsistencies than these and, if this is geared to the preteen/teenager, some disturbing examples of behavior besides what I mentioned that I wouldn't be keen on that age being exposed to.
