I love the Mercer Mayer Little Critter stories, I read several to my children everyday before bedtime. But I am not overly fond of this one. Our little trooper in this story seems way to healthy to be home sick. He doesn't tell his mom he has a sore throat, runny nose, coughing fits, fever, chills or throwing up. It seemed more like he was just wanting to play hooky from school.
He does all the normal things kids want to do at home play with toys, video games, hang out with buddies outside. But his mom just wants him to stay in bed and rest. Only 1 time in the book does Little Critter really show any signs of sickness or being ill. the book might have been stronger showing Little Critter passed out on the couch with a red stuffy nose curled up in a blanket with a half empty bowl of soup and his mom watching over him.
The mother does take him to the doctor, and gets medicine he doesn't want to take. That rings true for just about every child asked to taste medicine. I was surprised the mom didn't give him cough drops or Tea with honey, just basic remedies kids can understand and know what to do when they don't feel well. Also it might have been nice to have the mother explain why we wear jackets and warm clothes when we go outside and wash hands so we don't get sick in the first place.
Overall I think he gets the point that being sick is no fun at all and being in school with your friends is much better place to be. So the story does end on a good moral note. It just wasn't as good as other Little Critter stories.
This is a good one! Just about everyone can relate to being “just a little sick” and staying home from school wanting to play but being told to go rest in bed. There’s always so much going on in the illustrations in these stories. IMO they’re a great addition to any toddler book collection
My 5 year old daughter loves the Mercer Mayer books. We had bought this book when there was a nasty bug running it's way though our house and my daughter loved being able to relate "Just A Little Sick" to what was going on in her life. I will absolutely be buying more Little Critter books in the future.
