What Does Paul Mean That Our Lives Are "Hidden With Christ in God"

I enjoyed reading this book as much as I felt inspired and challenged to think again about familiar passages of scripture. James writes in natural and fluid style in a manner which all can relate to because his life lessons are drawn from everyday life – from mowing the lawn, tuning a car radio to playing the guitar.

The structure of the chapters is easily accessible and does not overload you with questions at the end to ponder. Instead he provides four sections to help you to apply and memorize the teaching: Living into the Truth; Affirmation; Prayer and Reflection.

Target audience

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to take a closer look at the amazing truths in Colossians 3, and to learn and grow through doing so. I think it is also something that will appeal to anyone seeking to grow in their faith.

Verdict

This is a book I would recommend to others to grow their relationship with God and was a worthwhile read.

James writes of how we should appreciate the wondrous truth that just as Christ dwells within us we too are hidden within Him. He writes:

“As I began to delve deeper into this word (and parallel passages) a new understanding of what it means to have my life hidden in Christ emerged, and with it a deeper gratitude to God and a more solid confidence in Jesus than ever before.” P14

What would it be like if one where to take a section of scripture and memorize it? What would be the outcome and affect? Jim Smith took the time to memorize the first 17 verses of Colossians chapter 3 and this amazing book came out of it. He wrote the book as a 30-day devotional with each day reflecting on a word or phrase from each verse. Built into the end of each chapter (day),which take about 10-15 minutes to read, is an opportunity for the reader to respond, affirm, pray and reflect. Some of the insights that ooze out of this book is the reminder of how powerful scripture memorization is and how the word of God changes lives. At the end of the book there is also a group discussion guide to help with further reflection. If you since you need a change or want a fresh perspective on how you currently spend time (or lack of time) with God, this book is a healthy option. This book was written to be read as a devotional. I would recommend taking the time to read this book and go through and complete the responses at the end of each chapter. I would also encourage forming a group and going over the group discussion questions to build on what the Holy Spirit is revealing to you.

I recommend this book for independent or group study. I have done it in both settings and will continue to use it for personal and group growth. Being encouraged to memorize the passage of scripture was daunting for me, but the author breaks it down so well that I have found the suggested memorization doable. (I am 55 years old and have struggled memorizing, so the fact that I have the first 12 verses committed to memory over the past 6 weeks has kept me motivated)

Having read "Embracing the Love of God, The Path and Promise of Christian Life" by the same author and being transformed, I purchased his newest book immediately. It is wonderful. Based on Colossians 3:1-17, the book delves into how our lives are "hidden with Christ." I'm still trying to wrap my head around this concept and plan on re-reading this insightful and powerful teaching tool. The book is divided into 30 short chapters and could easily be used for group Bible study or a daily devotional. As a songwriter, I set the base verse to music making it easier for me to memorize. James Bryan Smith has become one of my favorite authors and hugely appreciate his compassion and insight!
