4.0 out of 5 starsKindergarten book
Reviewed in Canada on August 31, 2021
This book is colourful and easy to read. Much like a Robert Munsch book. I thought the contents themselves did not always relate to how kindergarten works in my local schools, but the kids enjoyed it nonetheless. Especially the page where you read the contents going into the backpack, and the kids all yell, “Check!” They also enjoyed finding the differences in the illustrations on each page, ie., number of fish in the bowl.

Laurisa
2.0 out of 5 starsNot the best book for prepping kids for kindergarten
Reviewed in Canada on June 7, 2020
As a stand alone story, this book is just OK. As far as prepping children for kindergarten book, despite the title, it is not very good.

The book is a collection of poems about kindergarten. The idea is that it takes you all the way through the first year of school, up to kindergarten graduation. It covers themes familiar to kindergarteners: getting ready for school, being nervous, having a nice teacher, losing teeth, field trips, growing out of clothes... things like that.

However, as far as getting ready for kindergarten, since so much of the focus is on what happens once a child is comfortable in the setting (like the 100th day of school and saying goodbye when moving on to grade one), it wouldn't be a book I'd recommend for this purpose. It does little to help children get ready for the transition.

I find the rhyme and rhythm to be clumsy, and other than one student who is Black (who's only participation in the book is shown being mean to the main character), there is little diversity.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Cute poems, but doesn't really help with kindergarten nerves

This was a disapointment. I guess I didn't read the description properly, because I did not realize that this was a book of poems. I wish that was made more clear on the cover of the book. While the poems are cute enough, this book didn't do anything really to help give my son an idea of what to expect on his first day in kindergarten. Buy if you like poems, but avoid if you're looking for an actual *story*.

Adorable book. Read it to my son for 2 months prior to starting school. Then we read it again about a week after he started and he was excited to tell me that he did all the same things. Definitely saw how he was able to connect to this book.
I have another son who will go to school next year so he will get to experience this well written book as well.

We love this book. My son looks forward to kindergarten so much! Criss Cross Apple sauce is their favorite page. Bought 3 more for their schools and birthday present.
