We bought this book to use in a family study of Psalms that became very important to us as we ended up in lockdown during the Covid 19 pandemic. Unfortunately, this did not suit our needs at all.

The material as presented by the authors is simply too dense and the discussion questions are more geared towards professional or semi- professional Bible scholars than they are for laypeople. It seemed more suitable for an academic setting then for the family Bible study that we were trying to do or even a Sunday School or Bible study group led by a minister.

If you are looking for something that your family or small group will actually enjoy doing while studying the Psalms, look elsewhere. The questions for reflection on the passages ended up being too much like homework. We ended up resenting the amount of effort it took.

This not to say that we expected to be coddled or that Bible study shouldn't take some dedication. It's the style of the authors that makes this study an absolute chore. An example from page 32:

"Psalms like Psalm 32 sing of forgiveness. Martin Luther called such Psalms "the Pauline Psalms" because they reminded him of Paul's theology of the forgiveness of sins (e.g., Paul uses Psalm 32: 1-2a in Romans 4: 6- 8 to show that "not counting sin" [which he treats as another way of counting righteousness] has always been done "apart from works"). How is the forgiveness of sins illustrated? Look at verse 11. What does forgiveness lead to?"

That's an actual question and they're almost all like that. If you're a layperson who is still considering buying this book, I encourage you to take a few minutes to read the referenced verses in Psalm 32 and Romans 4 and try to answer that question so that you understand what you have to look forward to in this course of study.

This book is very advanced. My co-worker and I are studying Psalms and some of the questions are college Thesis Level questions. She has a study bible, I do not. She is also finding it very difficult. We have made it through week 3 and have Learned A-LOT. We are both pleased with the course, but would like it to be a little less intense. We have not decided if we would buy another book from this same author just based on the Level of difficulty. There are great exercises we just wish there were a study guide or answer key we could also purchase.

I selected this for our small women's Bible study group. As far as I know, we are all enjoying it. This study is for someone who really wants to dig into the richness of God's Word. It is work for us, but well worth it. It's not necessary, but some of us try to do research outside of the Bible which probably adds to the workload, but is truly deepening our knowledge and appreciation of the Psalms. Highly recommended for those who desire meat, not fluff.

This study has been informative but a lot of the time the questions seem to lead nowhere and are difficult to answer. There isn't much space to write in the workbook itself. You'll need to insert additional paper. The questions are often three and four part questions requiring sometimes an hour for just one! I wouldn't recommend this for a study group.
