3.0 out of 5 starsGood for beginners, but not people already reading tech career advice
Reviewed in Canada šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦ on December 12, 2019
From a software developers perspective, this book is good for university students or newer developers, but if you've already been in the industry, then might not want to spend your time.

Cracking the Coding Interview from the same author is a great book and worth 2 - 3x its price. However, if you need general career advice, I would say The Complete Software Developer Guide might be a better book.

I read this in an hour cover to cover. Didn't learn anything revelational. And that's fine. If you haven't read much on career advice this book might have new information for you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some good insights, but nothing you can't find out online.

There are some good insights in this book, but at the end of the day this definitely isn't a book you absolutely need to read in order to "crack" the tech career. However, for those looking for some guidance in how to get started, this can be useful.

Just know before you buy this book that there are plenty of useful (and free) resources online that can tell you the exact same information.

I’m in tech, and through my own experience I already knew a good amount of what was in the book. However, I still found a lot of great insights and tips into areas that were not as known to me. I definitely recommend this book!

Your career is one of the most important aspects of your life. For the tech world, there are few books and resources which give you an insider's view of how the whole process works. Fortunately this book does. It covers both resume and interview preparation, as well as tech culture, handling and negotiating offers, and even career planning once you're in.

What I like most about this book is its frankness and readability. The offers and opportunities you get are strongly related to how others perceive you, and having the knowledge in this book will give you insight into the other side of the table. That translates to confidence and better offers. I can't think of a better investment of $10 and a few hours, for getting your first offer or improving your career.

If there's any shortcoming to this book, it's that it could be longer. Fortunately the author is on the website Quora and goes into detail on many specific questions.

4.0 out of 5 stars Must read for anyone applying to their 1st job in tech

Appreciate Gayle's thorough approach. Definitely recommend for new college grads and those who never worked in tech and are looking for their 1st job in this space. This book is a beast and for me was best used by skipping around to relevant materials. Some of the sections such as resumes, etc. might be common sense but could be useful for others. I work at a top tech company and can say that Gayle is spot on with some of her insights. Found the interview section very useful. Would have appreciated a less dry approach ala Ramit Sethi. But wish it came from the author as she obviously is an expert in this job category.
