5.0 out of 5 starsLove it!

I read other comments on different sites, and I disagree with most of them. One comment says the movies bad becaue the family is shallow and non-likable. My opinion is; that's the point! Most families are shallow on a day to day level, but this is a very loving, extremely close family who - once you get to know them - have been through a lot. Amy (the daughter) is absolutely not likeable, but when you imagine her being the youngest girl; still single, no kids, moving home for family reasons, definitely playing second fiddle to a deaf little brother who's got so much going for him, you discover she's got a lot to be miserable about. NEXT COMMENT SPOILER ALERT: Cybil (the mother) has been through hell with cancer and is not facing the fact that this will be her last Christmas and is terrified as much of dying as she is of the fact that she won't be there for her son (and other kids) when they fail in life. She's trying to hold herself together and be brave, but she's frustrated and in pain and sick. Anybody in that state would be unlikable, but she's still trying. In short, I really feel for the entire family. I admit that I cannot stand the young actress who plays the granddaughter. She's a poor actress (even for a child) and was poorly directed, and the poor editing around her scenes topped off with the overall unlikability of her character really puts me off. Otherwise, I love the movie. The characters being unlikable and "seemingly" shallow does not make the movie bad; it makes it realistic. It's Christmas, everyboody's home and exhausted from life, and they're sleeping late, eating poorly, and their mother is dying. Sounds like reality to me.

1.0 out of 5 starsDidn't work

This DVD didn't work. I was planning a movie night for friends and ordered this but it didn't work in my DVD player or 2 different laptops :( It definitely wasn't an original but a copy (you could tell by the case and the materials used). But it was only $5 which Amazon reimbursed, so no harm done besides my movie night haha.

HALL OF FAME
4.0 out of 5 stars Fortunately the trailer does not give away why this holiday film works
Reviewed in Canada on July 12, 2006
I watched "The Family Stone" with some trepidation because while I knew it had this great ensemble cast the trailer made it clear that this holiday film was going to go to engage in one of my least favorite romantic plots. That would be where Person A is engaged to Person B and brings them home to meet the family, a which point Person B will fall for Person C, who is the sibling of Person A. In this Person A would be Everett Stone (Dermot Mulroney), Person B would be his fiance, Meredith Morton (Sarah Jessica Parker), and Person B would be Everett's brother, Ben (Luke Wilson). I just think of my brother and I being the siblings in such a story and all I can think is that it would be the end of the world as we know it. A story like "Moonstruck" pushes me about as far as I can go along these lines. Fortunately, "The Family Stone," is about more than this plot line.

One of those things is also clear from the trailer. When Everett brings Meredith home to meet the family, the Stones do not like her. True, Meredith is wound way too tight, but Everett's sister Amy (Rachel McAdams) poisons the well before the couple arrives because Meredith clears her throat when she is nervous. The matriarch of the family, Sybil (Diane Keaton) is horrified by the thought that Everett will ask for her mother's wedding ring to give to Meredith. Even the family's black sheep, Ben, who seems to be the only one who does not have a problem with Meredith, blithely announces the two do not love each other. It is Kelly (Craig T. Nelson), the father, who points out Meredith does not trust herself. However, this conclusion does not persuade anybody to treat her any differently. So I was worried that the arc of the film predicted by the trailer would play itself out.

Fortunately, there is something the trailer does not give away that adds pathos to the proceedings. The insults and the slapstick do not end up being the most memorable part of "The Family Stone," at least not for me (which is fine, because I hate it when trailers have all of the best gags of a movie, something that is happening way too frequently this century). Writer-director Thomas Bezucha, whose only previous credit is "Early May," really lets Meredith dig her own grave quite a bit here, but he also gives her a moment of redemption when she does one thing right. More importantly, when we get to the end of the movie, Bezucha does not make us cry. He lets us cry.

As mentioned previously, the ensemble cast is pretty impressive. The rest of the Stone family consists of another daughter, Susannah Stone Trousdale (Elizabeth Reaser), who is expecting her second child, another son, Thad (Tyrone Giordano), and Thad's partner, Patrick Thomas (Brian White). Thad is gay, but more importantly he is deaf, and one of the defining characteristic of the family is that they tend to sign as they speak, even if Thad is not around. All Meredith has on her side is her sister, Julie (Claire Danes), called in when fleeing the Stone house for a local inn proves insufficient. There are some funny slapstick moments in this one, but the idea this 2005 film was a screwball comedy is ludicrous. This one has a lot more heart than that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Christmas film

Love this film. The character Sarah Jessica Parker plays is so intense, she opens her mouth and offends the family, the boyfriend is a tad weak for my liking and should be more in control. All in all it's a lovely bitter sweet film, with sprinklings of humour......

4.0 out of 5 stars A Christmas must!

A comedy drama that we can all identify with; it's funny, it's sad and it's life. The family are happy to bear their teeth to anyone who doesn't fit in or are unfortunate enough to question their middle class dysfunctional ways; a more self-righteous lot would be hard to find. Its most recent victim is Meredith Morton, an executive played by Sarah Jessica Parker, who is visiting her boyfriend's family for Christmas. The Family Stone has a manic energy to it and an extraordinary capacity for love.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strange but good

This film, for me, was all about the dynamics of a family. A family which clashes at times, has members which are protective of other members to the point that they keep outsiders are kept out, and also a family unit that is built on an underlying mutual love but not necessary consensus within the family. SJP plays an unusual character with an awkward presence. This awkwardness stays throughout the film, but luckily her eventual pairing with Luke Wilson works in her characters favour as his relaxed composure and attitude to life compensates for her own shortcomings. In this way, `The Family Stone' ends positively, with the family remembering the importance of family and its members as they gather yet again for another xmas the following year, but this time without the `stone' of the family; the mother. All in all an enjoyable film albeit for strange reasons. Try it for yourself; you may love it as I did :D
