I was moving from Ottawa to Toronto and needed a bike rack as my little Civic could not store all my stuff plus my bike. When I was looking to buy a rack, I went to the Allen Sports website to make sure my car was compatible, and after I put it my car details the website said I was. Well... when I received the actual product, they provide a list of compatible cars, and when looking for my car it says: Honda Civic (no spoiler). Great Allen Sports, why didn't you say this on your website? If you have a spoiler, this product will most likely not work, but it's easy to remove a spoiler (remove some bolts and unplug the light cable) so it's worth the extra bit of work to save money.
As for driving from Ottawa to Toronto, it went okay. As soon as I left, I turned into a parking lot and went over a speed bump and the rack fell off... Obviously this really scared me as I would be driving for 5 hours on the highway and didn't want the thing falling off and killing someone behind me. I thought my straps were tight, but after this incident I really made sure to tighten the hell out of the s traps. Suffice to say, I was able to complete the trip, but stopped every 80 km to check on the bike. I had to retighten a couple straps maybe two times out of the trip, which is pretty good. I've used it a lot since on a lot of smaller trips and I find it will take a few minutes to the the thing set up.
For the price ($45) the product is great, but be warned you need to be VERY careful and tighten the hell out of it,and this is NOT compatible with spoilers.
Does it’s job, is cheap. I often am worried driving with It strapped on my car which I think I shouldn’t be with a product like this. I went over 1 small bump in the road and the 2 bikes I had on the rack shifted. By the time I got to my destination it the rack was nearly falling off. Maybe too much weight from the 2 bikes? Maybe went a bit too quick over that bump? Not sure. But I do know I wouldn’t recommend this for a friend.
It works. It comes pre assembled, you only need to pull the pin in which may be a little difficult. I added electrical tape around the hooks so it wouldnt mess with the paint. Set up wasnt too difficult, but the straps weren't tight and felt pretty low quality. I took the car out for a spin and the bike stayed on pretty tight. Nonetheless, it works but it didn't instill confidence with the straps feeling pretty low quality. Will keep updated.
An excellent bike rack for the price. Goes on easily and is very secure. The only downside is that there are no rubber coatings on the clasps and they could scratch the paint. I wrapped black electrical tape around them to avoid this happening.
Edit: The clasps have scratched the paint on my CX-5. The clasps have to be totally wrapped in electrical tape or something similar to avoid scratching the car's paint. This really should be done by the manufacturer.
Good value for the price. But, It has a couple of issues when attached to my toyota corolla 2010: 1) The bike holder closer to the trunk is a little too close for an adult bike, the peddles are touching the bumper and the handle bar breaks are touching trunk 2) the License plate is completely blocked (not sure if that is legal) 3) I had to tie down the straps using zip lock ties, it would be nice if Allen sports provided hold down ties for the straps.
All in all for the price it has value and the construction seems very stable.
