I think this style should be limited to 2 bikes or very short trips. I used it to take 3 ladies bikes (1 road bike, 2 mountain bikes) on a 1.5-2hr trip and it dented my trunk just below the license plate. Will be looking into roof rack or hitch version instead. It was also quite difficult to fit all three bikes on the carrier. Attaching it to the trunk is quite easy.

I bought this as a quick cheap solution and it mostly fit the bill. It took a moment to figure out, but installed easilly after that. I found that the pressure on the trunk of my cheap rented car caused temporary deformation in the body. Carefully readjusting reduced the problem to manageable for a weekend trip, but I would want a heavier gauge materials for any car I was going to use it with in the long term . . . or add my own solution to spread the load better. I have sympathy designers of these things. I also own a heavier gauge bike rack that fits to a trailer hitch - but the weight of that solution makes me nervious on the road unless I am driving an SUV or other heavier vehicle. Too much waggle. Once secured, this one did not waggle to much unless a bump in the road exceeded the tolerance of the car body and temporarily deformed the body. When possible, best solution is to try a rack before buying using the car you intend to drive.

I have a 2014 VW passat sedan and was worried the rack would not configure on my truck, unfortunately the written instructions were not too clear where the 2 steel support pins are inserted in side arms. I went to google and searched, found an install video example then configured same and this rack is now on my sedan.Bike has already been used and saved myself $850 CAD by not installing a hitch and extra bike racck, my amazon / Allan solution was less than $150CAD total.PH.

The nice thing about this plan is I can only ride the bike 6 months of 12 so off to storage over the winter

Quite sturdy. Was able to hold on to 2 bikes from CCM, which are quite heavy on my Mazda CX5. Had to figure out a way to adjust the bikes as you can see in the pic. CAUTION --- Never open your trunk once this is attached. I had a bad incident where the hook on the top got stuck and it left a dent on the top part. Just make sure you never open the trunk with the top hooks attached.
Very stable product -- went almost 1000 km with no issues and car speed of 130km/hr. Will recommend the product.

USED on FORD ESCAPE - first, it's a tight fit to get 3 bikes and I think it was only possible because one is a childs bike. second, you better be good at tetris. third; if you are using a city bike/cruiser/touring bike, expect to get creative and be thankful the Escape isn't low to the ground. Once we knew how we were going to be able to get all three bikes on the rack it was far easier but not by much. Standard Womens bikes are going to need the bar accessory (when you see generally purchased with), also get the little straps for the tires, it just helps. If you have a touring/cruiser bike, expect to fight to make sure those straps are tight.

we didn't use the suggestion of tape everywhere the rack touches the car, and we were off gravel roads so when time to go home, reinstalling the rack was not done on a clean car, and the bike rack was dusty... we cleaned it off best we could and just tightened everything, no scratches that we saw when we got home.

Big thing, only install the rack AFTER filling the trunk. because once installed those top racks will stop the trunk from opening fully. don't be scared to ensure those straps are tight. the side straps are best to hook on either side UNDER the lights for a secure fit.
