5.0 out of 5 stars Little Thunder is NOT a burp!

Wonderful book - the illustrations are amazing. This has a lovely rhythm and poses questions about identity and naming. Alexie's sense of humour is certainly evident (how about the name "Mud in his ears"?; "Little Thunder... makes me sound like a burp or a fart"). I was curious as to why Thunder Boy Jr.'s dream featured his mom as the sun and his dad as the moon; the First Nations communities I know see the moon as feminine and the sun as masculine. Thunder Boy Jr. is a grass dancer at pow wows and has touched an orca on the nose (where is he living?). But overall a funny book, and the Dad is the one who gifts the son with a new name.

This is an amazing book and can be used in the classroom to teach students about identity, being unique, finding your strengths, and introduces children/students to an aspect of First Nations culture.

I love this book! The writing is fun and the pictures are great! I'm a teacher and like to read it at the beginning of the year and do a name project after to get to know the students.

If you'd like a mind-opening super fun adventure with deeper meanings, take a peek at Thunder Boy Jr. This picture book is a delightful exploration into identity formation that young children can relate to as they take those first beginner steps towards independence. Thunder Boy, Jr. clearly loves his dad, he just wants to be known for more than sharing his dad's name. With wonderful word play, tons of imagination and heart, the author, Sherman Alexie and the illustrator show a contemporary Native American family in the funnest and most relatable way. The story and art mix traditional elements from certain specific tribes with the contemporary vibe of a modern family.

Yuyi's illustrations are dynamic and wonderfully colorful, with subtle emotional elements telling their own story as well. The background of every page contains shades and patterns of gray, alluding to an all-encompassing storm that Thunder Boy, Jr compares to his father's presence. Every page has motion and texture and little surprises, which make the story and the art an engaging read.

Overall, this book was beautifully done and a great book for children learning to be their own person and for the parents who just want them to flourish. 5.0 out of 5 stars Marvelous, Charming Children's Book (that is also a great adult books)

If you are familiar with Sherman Alexie, you probably don't need this recommendation, so this is for those of you who aren't already Alexie fans.
This is a tale of a boy who was gifted with his father's name, but who wants his own name and to not be regarded as his fathers little version. And that's the plot. Alexie's language is wonderful, capturing a young boy's cadences and thought sequences. And that's the magic of this marvelous short book. Oh, there are also exquisite drawings: detailed, evocative, fantastic. So visual and verbal magic!
Read this for yourself. And then read it for every child you know or can borrow. It's a wonder!

This is the story of Thunder Boy Jr. who just wants his own name. This is a sweet tale. It is wonderfully written. A simple but powerful story of the power of a name.
