My own father has a degree in geology & rock & mineral collections abound in my family when I was growing up. So when I saw these I bought them for my 3 kids (5-8 yrs) right away.

What fun! My kids have spent a couple hours carefully chipping away at these... I'm even having fun helping my youngest. And we still aren't done.

The stones are legit & most are clearly recognisable. One or two got broken in half during excavation and a couple are a bit plain but the vast majority are nice examples of common stones like tiger's eye, amethyst, etc. Nothing stunning but for a kids' activity encased in plaster - this is a win. Too tough for my almost 5 yr old (yay I can help), challenging for my 6 yr old, perfect for my 8 yr old.

Well, so far I'm not too impressed. This was a birthday gift for a 7 year old girl who LOVES gemstones. Yesterday she started excavating the gems. The first 4 in no way resemble the gems in the booklet! They were dark grey, black, dark blue and white. She desperately was hoping to find the pink or red or mauve one. I realize there are 15 in the block, but so far, none of them resemble the booklet. I doubt they can be identified either. Sure hope things improve. I could see her disappointment... as was I.

Wow this is AMAZING. Spend the money and do it .
Our 4.5 year old had so much fun, she was super excited while extracting the rocks.
She did need a little bit of help with some as she's fairly dainty and handles things with a delicate touch. So we helped her with a couple but most she could do on her own.
I'd say this would be great for ages 4-12

Lots of fun for a seven-year-old

Great gift for a seven year old girl! Our daughter loved it. She got it for Christmas and opened it up on boxing day. It took her hours to dig through it (several hours over two days) but she was able to do it mostly by herself and was so delighted every time she uncovered a new gem and checking the booklet to see which one it was. Now that she's finished, she has a gem collection that she loves.

We did have to sit her down and explain, TWICE, that she was not rich now. Other than that, no complaints. It was her favorite Christmas gift.

Fun for a 9 year old - for a little while

We purchased this for my daughter who is 9 years old. The package and everything was nicely laid out.

The excavation "rock" was smaller than I anticipated. However, my daughter jumped in quickly and spent 1.4 hours the first day digging and chipping away with great results. She found 6 rocks the first time. She found it hard to chip away and her hands began to get sore. She continued the next day for only 1/2 hour and found 2 more rocks. Then she put it away and hasn't touched it since (an entire week). So, it was fun and then it seemed to be too much work....the fun didn't last.

As you might guess, chipping and crushing the rock creates quite a mess. Prepare a nice surface to do the work. We placed a large garbage bag on the table and let her make her mess there.

Finally, the book is handy and provides 1-2 paragraphs about each rock. Interesting, but perhaps a map of the world, showing where the rocks could be primarily found, would be a handy extra.

Excellent kit. WAY BETTER THAN THE GEODE ONE. The geode one was meh. The rocks were all the same.

My 3 yo & husband had fun "digging" together. For my son he had to focus, work together, share tools, use fine motor skills and then had fun matching the rocks to their picture.

Plus, it bought mommy an hour of time off to enjoy watching them and a hot cup of tea :)

My 8 year-old son LOVES it. He loves stones and minerals and this is definitely one of the best gift I got him. Mind you, it' not really fancy stones, they are small polished semi-precious stones but he loves digging and discovering them. He's been working on it since two days now (after school) and found 6 stones, on a total of 15. He's being very patient and meticulous, so that is surprising me. The kit also comes with a very cool little booklet on the stones present in the kit, their qualities and how to differentiate them. Also comes in french, BTW.
Just perfect. I also bought the geode kit, which I didn't open yet but can't wait.

My 4 year old loved this. She needed quiet play during her recovery from surgery — and this kit was the perfect outlet for her energy and curiosity. It took her about two hours to find all the gems and we did use a bit of water to soften it up after about an hour and a half of work.

We used a tray lined with newspaper to keep the mess contained.

Most of the stone samples were easily identified using the included booklet. I would highly recommend.

Good product, of course kids will love it. It wasn't hard for my 4 year old. I like what you get for the money and the fun it is doing it. However, one thing I didn't like is the desert rose rock not being able to come clean nice. Its got so many cracks and I can only pick out so much. Maybe that one in some sort of wrap would have been nice. But overall..good, fun, easy, well priced kit!

When my husband and I visited the museum we talked about his interest in stones and being a geologist, so I bought this little kit even though it is advertised for kids. Surprisingly we had lots of fun digging them up and we actually learnt new things about the stones in there. I agree with the other reviews that some of the stones look a bit different than the pictures but we managed to identify them all. We are going to get a display stand and put them in the study. It's a very cute gift and I imagine the kids would love it too.
