Our 4 year old loves the Arthur series and requested this one. It's a great story about responsibility but beware your child will likely starting asking for more responsibility (in hopes he/she can get a new pet!)....

Love the characters in the book and the drawings capture attention.

Also, on the bonus point, a great book for schoolers who are gradually learning how to read, 3-6. Love this book and its originality, authentic, originally published 1990, this book is "Golden". Would recommend.
