5.0 out of 5 starsGreat take on minimalism.
Reviewed in Canada πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ on November 13, 2020
The author's at times quirky personality comes through for an at times *very* personal account; I've been naturally minimalist for years but not to the extent he is and may never be, but I found his way of doing things had some useful ways of thinking that inspired me to adjust my space and habits a bit.

His take lacks some of the weirder aspects of Marie Kondo -- no talking to your socks. And unlike Ms. Kondo I think he's unlikely to open a 'lifestyle' business selling people crap they don't need on the heels of this book ... LOL .. but you never know.

I assume this was written before the pandemic, because his strategy pre-supposes business-as-usual without a potentially life-threatening plague shutting down urban centers. Japan is no stranger to disasters, however, and he makes sense when he importunes us not to be essential supplies horders. Yeah, I'm looking at you, with the all the toilet paper. Jerk.

3.0 out of 5 starsOne of my fav books of all time
Reviewed in Canada πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ on May 11, 2018
I loved that the author added pictures in the beginning of the book of packed, messy apartments and then of clean extreme minimal living spaces.
I was surprised to read the amount of japanese people that commit suicide from unhappiness, that was shocking.
I twinged at the F-word in one of the quotes he shared. Idk, I find it a turn off and unprofessional seeing an F word in any book esp these types of learning/teaching books. Makes the author come across as immature. Everyone can curse obv but truly theres a time and place.. use better discernment. But hey- thats just my opinion.

I especially loved the first half of the book. The second half talked less about minimalism and more on topics like how to be happy etc

I also feel this book should be sold for $7 not $14 but Id still say it was worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book - highly recommend!

I'd recommend this book to anyone - whether or not they're interested in minimalism.

The book does a great job of explaining what it means to be a minimalist, and his journey on how he got to where he is now. In my opinion, there's no fillers or useless information/ quotes. I also felt that a lot of the ideas discussed were ones that could be applied to our daily lives, not just on our belongings. Every page was useful and possibly the only book I would re-read again and again over time. Likely, one of the very last things I would declutter or let go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Would recommend this book, I like the design and the content

Haven't read it fully yet but just open on some pages and read once in a while. I enjoy it.
it makes sense and in spite of some people mentioning some religious propaganda, it was not part of the pages I've read and seems ok.

The design and font is pleasant and easy to read. I somehow like that some pages have free space, the text of the chapter is shorter. that really gives the book some more air and a feeling of completion of a chapter / idea.

overall I'd recommend this book.

Almost halfway through and this book is already paying itself : I got really inspired by the stories and tips that I started to sell some items I didn't need anymore. Only please sell / donate your usable items, the author talks a lot about throwing and that would be my only criticism of the book so far. Give your stuff a second life!

I picked up a copy of this ebook as I'm in need of a material item purge. It makes many valid points and is helpful for someone who is just beginning to think about minimalism. I don't think that I will ever get to the level of a bed couch but it's nice to see the connection between how clutter can affect your personal life.

This book introduced me to the world of minimalism. I've totally decluttered my life and I've never been happier. Now, everything I own fits in a couple of suitcases. If you're ready to take the plunge and relinquish the control your material possession has over your life. This book is a great start. (And yes, it is ironic to buy something to learn to get rid of things but get over it. This book works!)

I liked the stories at the beginning of the book that illustrated the different ways minimalism was lived by people living minimalistic lifestyles. There’s no one way to do it but there is one guiding principle (to narrow down distractions to only what is important to us and what we need) that they all have in common.

Great book! Really inspired me to want to declutter...Updated Review..After finishing it I decluttered alot of my junk..it really is a great feeling...and then I started reading it again, which is unusual for me because I rarely finish a book in the first place let alone re-read one!

I’ve been on the minimalist journey for several years. This book was an excellent reminder of what minimalism is. Having seven children I still struggle with being truly minimalist but this book helps remind me.
