How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another book on leadership and vision – but with a welcome difference
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 30, 2017
Another book on leadership and vision – but with a welcome difference. ‘Leading with Vision’ does, as you might expect, spend much of the book thinking about leadership and vision, but the refreshing difference in this text is that it makes a conscious effort to think about the cultural differences between generations (X, Y, Baby Boomers etc). Of course there are many other books available on generational culture difference but this is a very easy to read one-stop shop bringing together leadership, vision and (what the authors call) the ‘disconnect’ often found between managers and the workforce. Among the many themes that are explored two in particular summarise both the book and the nature of Generation Y, namely: the need for both connectedness and a catching vision. The authors explore the importance of relational working, inspiring vision, excitement and enthusiasm for the company’s product and ethos, and the valuing of story, participation and transactional leadership.

Continuing the theme of the book, each chapter provides lots of anecdotal sketches as well as the theory and practice behind the examples. The chapters end with ‘takeaways’ which are helpful, concise summaries of what has been written earlier. Whilst the book is more than the sum of these ‘takeaways’, nevertheless the book is overly wordy – not in a complicated way – but the conversational style does ensure that what might take a paragraph is stretched to fit a page.

On the whole the book is engaging and practical and leaves the reader wanting to try out some of the thoughts and practices. If you overlook the consistently cheesy corporate-speak sub-headings and pick out the key points, this book takes you on a gentle but interesting journey to its conclusion of ‘a blueprint for creating a compelling vision’. I am not sure there is anything new in this blueprint but the motivation increases as you read so that you feel empowered to give it a go.

4.0 out of 5 stars Leading with Vision
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 19, 2017
There are a lot of books on the market about leadership and so it is interesting to compare them and see which have anything new to offer. Certainly, businesses face uncertain times and so the authors suggest a new, more thoughtful and more relevant approach is needed. The authors have certainly done a lot of research for this book and they include a lot of real life stories, and examples, to illustrate their points about what makes a good leader. How do leaders create a compelling vision and then engage, and inspire, others.

Each chapter ends with a list of bullet points – “Takeaways” which give you advice on how you can use the information in each section in the workplace. So, for example, Chapter 5 is about how to “Embody Courage,” and some of the ‘Takeaways” are suggestions such as “When was the last time you used a personal story to get your message across?” or “Do you role-model the behaviours you want to see in others?” This is a very readable, and interesting, book, with lots of interesting suggestions of how to be a visionary leader and how to implement the ideas within the book to improve your leadership style.

5.0 out of 5 stars A significant and challenging book that should be read by every leader today
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 13, 2017
I read a lot of leadership books, most of which have a unique selling point or at least a clearly defined purpose. Many of these add something to my mental process but don't draw me back to revisit them. This book is quite different, it s written with some angst and urgency having been the result of direct research and a report that highlighted a real need in leadership today. This is not written because the authors have a cool 3 day course that they want to promote, but rather because they are professionals, have done research and want to offer solutions to real needs. I read this not because it was a cute book with interesting reviews, but because this is a real game changer, whether you are in business, education, health or the third sector.
This book will particularly challenge you as a leader, making you ask yourself whether you are delivering what s expected of you and to some degree minimising the size of your own ego. This book offers a real and achievable strategy to becoming what your organisation needs, and you will not find any pages here that are just 'fillers'. With lots of emphasis on real vision, may I suggest that this is a book you will come back to again and again. This may become 'the one minute manager' of its day.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real Blueprint for Leaders
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 5, 2017
This book is truly enlightening. This book shows that it all depends on vision. Even your strategy should be one that is informed by your company's vision. It's a Vision for the future, a clear picture of future. It is what leads to Innovation, and action to reach to realise the future. But how do employees work towards the future (the vision) if they do not share it? If they are not engaged? This is the subject of this book. How to lead your people with vision. It's about inspirational leadership where everything is done in order to realise the Vision.

I have read many books on Business, strategy, finance, management and so on but not many on Vision. The reason is that it looked to me like there is nothing to it (vision) other than that it is there on some placard or in company booklets. Vision seems such a mundane thing. I worked at a company where I did not know the company mission until after I was there for over 5 years. I saw it on the back gate when the company painted it at our rear entrance! This boom has really helped me understand how important a vision is.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very useable book to help promote wise and dynamic leadership
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 6, 2017
In a competitive economic environment wise leaders are always looking for an edge. In this book by Bonnie Hagemann et al the authors detail many companies where dynamic leadership and a potent vision, trickled down through the layers of staff in their company, leading to significant benefits for the company as a whole, including staff loyalty, engagement and retention; and reflected in cost savings above and below the line.

Even just buying the book and adopting one of the described visions to your own company would be beneficial - although clearly a vision personal to your own company situation would be best.

My only concern with the book was it was not particularly engaging to read and I found that once I put it down I found it hard to pick up again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for People that Don't Want to Commit to Reading the Whole Thing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 23, 2017
Great book filled with facts, stories, examples, diagrams and many chapters and sections breaking down the information into easy to read snippets. I love this because it enables busy people to dip in and read something that's relevant at the time. There are 12 chapters each with about 6 sub sections. I can easily flick to a bit that's about 3 pages long for a quick learn. Each chapter has a summary too to enable a takeaway.
I love this and feel it is a must for leaders. I like how it applies to any business scenario.

3.0 out of 5 stars Typical of genre- well presented, good points but hardly groundbreaking
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 10, 2017
Another accomplished but hardly groundbreaking slab of leadership strategy outlining and motivational pep talk. All boxes are ticked- clear presentation, sound advice, a good talk around and through the required qualities of leadership and developing/applying 'Vision' - and ideal if you are newish to the game or, feeling a little long in the tooth, in need of a bit of a refresher. In a genre now stuffed to busting with books like this, the content is predictable and hardly fresh, but if for a general orientation towards all things 'Vision' and 'Leadership' this is as good a one as any to give a go.
