Love this story. Was reading at the Dentist's office and was really irritated when they came to get me. Just one more chapter please. You must read the books in order to get a true feel for the characters. One suggestion, CUT THE HAIR RACHEL!!! You are going to get everyone killed. Okay, just read the books. Downloading the next one now.

Great writer. Great story. I care about the characters, they are believable and I can see the action as it happens. I highly recommend this series and the author.

So, that was my review after reading this book. I have now read all of the books on my kindle, pre-ordered #8, purchased all of them in soft cover and even purchased the audio book from Audible. I am waiting for all of them to come to Audible because I love being read to. They do need a different narrator though. Am I obsessive? Just a wee bit. I have read the series 3 times so far and each time it gets better. The characters are believable and I truly care about them. John is a great person and only wants to find his wife. Rachel just wants to survive and realizes that her best chance lies with John. Dog? Well, Dog is just really cool. I cannot recommend this series enough. Yes, there is violence, some pretty graphic. But they are fighting infected people trying to eat them for God’s sake! If you cannot deal with very well described violence, or a lot of military scenes, then go elsewhere for your entertainment. I can't wait to read each book but then I’m distressed when I finish one.

You must read them in order. That is the only way you will understand the story line and the world that the characters are trying to live in. Most books end and the next picks up at that spot. Some scenes in the later books have brought tears to my eyes because I have grown to truly care about the people who inhabit this world.

I would recommend reading the John Chase story after reading at least one of the Voodoo books. This will allow you to get to know him a little in this current world and understand some of what has made him into the man that he has become. Other things will fall into place.

If you do not like “Zombies”. If you do not really care about “military” scenes, descriptions, etc. If you are not particularly fond of “apocalypse” stories please move on instead of leaving a bad review. I know that not everyone likes everything but just move on. Please, this author does not deserve it. Nor do these stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Post-apocalyptic roller coaster ride.

The Voodoo Plague series by Dirk Patton is an original, character-filled, action-packed, compelling post-apocalyptic tale. The first book in series, Voodoo Plague, starts with a businessman, John Chase, experiencing some disturbing events while in a hotel in Atlanta. He rescues a woman, Rachel, from an attack and they quickly go on the run as they realize that people have become rage-infected due to a bioterrorist attack. They decide to head to Arizona to find John’s wife, Katie, and quickly get immersed in not only survival, but also helping others survive. In Book 3, John, Rachel and Dog continue to fight their way to the West.
There are several unique elements that make the series stand out from the ordinary.
1. The “zombies” are not undead; they are regular people who have been infected with a bioterrorism virus. Females are fast, 28 days later rage-filled creatures, and some exhibit intelligence, while males form slow shambling Romero-type herds.
2. This is not a story about an average Joe rising to the occasion -- the central character in the series, John Chase, is a highly trained ex-military superhero. He keeps going and going, like the Energizer bunny, and is skilled to the extent that the reader has to suspend disbelief at some points. But being a superhero has its benefits, and it allows John to charge from action-packed situation to situation, which makes for a tense roller-coaster ride -- bringing us to point 3.
3. Action is non-stop. Infected! Nukes! White Supremists! Tornados! Slavers! Floods! Train Wrecks! Plane Crashes! Redneck Shit-kickers! Rescues! Bioterrorism! Serial Killers! Invading Forces! Helicopter Crashes! There is seriously no breathing space ever in this series, which means there is never a logical breaking point when you can go to sleep or leave the book for a while.
4. The characters, including those in supporting roles, are all interesting. I didn’t much like John at first, as he is bit macho in the first book, but the other characters caught my attention, especially Dog. Rachel, the rather clichéd “stripper with heart of gold” (and smarts too) is tough and resilient and likeable. Crawford, Jackson, Roach, and other characters add depth to the story. Though you don’t want to get attached to them….these are normal mortals unlike John!
The Voodoo Plague series is good fun, and I recommend that you get the entire set, call in sick to work, and tell your family that you need some personal space. Then, curl up in a dark room and enjoy the roller-coaster ride as John, Rachel, and Dog try to survive the action-packed events in Dirk Patton’s extraordinary, post-apocalyptic world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't say a bad word about this story/Series

I love this series. Probably said that in my review after book 2, and I'm happily saying it after book 3. My only complaint is that i was paying no attention whatsoever to how much progress i had made. I was completely unaware that I was at the end of the book when it ended abruptly. It's fine, the series is 12 books long as of the time I'm writing this review, so the moment i submit this review i can buy book 4. I would definitely be upset, however, if i discovered this series as it was being written in the early days. The action in these books never lets up. In this one, book 3, something happens around the final quarter or so of the book, and by all means the author could have used it as a time to slow the story down, let characters rest, just had a large portion of dialogue if that's what he wanted to do. Buuuuut that's not how this series works. Instead of giving the characters a break, the action and violence just keeps on moving right along. I've read books 1-3 and been so happy about discovering them. I have every intention of reading every single one of these 12 books before i move on to anything else, but midway through this story, i found myself feeling sort of exhausted with the main characters. Not because it's a bad story...it's basically apocalyptic. Good things aren't going to happen. Knowing i have 9 books to go, I can only assume there is so much misery still to be had for these people. The characters would be so tired right now, and reading this, i feel like you can't help but feel what they would be feeling. I didn't mean i was tired of the characters, i just think this story is well written and it drags you right in, and by the time this book comes along, with the progression of the characters, you just can't feel good about what's ahead...sorry, i ramble on these reviews, and i feel like I'm doing it here. This series is great. I personally can not stop reading it. As I said in my review of book 2, it seems impossible to think all 12 of these books can stay as good as what I've read up to this point, i hope I'm wrong. Nothing I've read to this point leads me to believe this story will slow down. If somehow you've stumbled upon my review, i hope I've said enough good stuff to make you believe you should also keep reading. Okay, i think I've gone on long enough. Buying book 4 right now

5.0 out of 5 stars Chase, Miles, Dog and the way West

Another good read by Patton.

This one has Chase and Miles making it out of Murfreesboro.

Rachel is unconscious after being blown off her feet by an explosion. She and John are in an ambulance and they make it away from the area where Rolling Thunder will occur. Carpet bombing of the entire area is what the AF will be doing.

Chase makes his way to a house where he finds several murdered people. Seems there are plenty of folks who think nothing of killing.

Chase takes care of the killers and takes the opportunity to clean up, eat and make sure Rachel is all right. They then head west.

Rachel and Chase end up at the Mississippi River where a train is going to ferry thousands of survivors across the River. Its a crap shoot though as thousands of infected are at the sight and the military is running low on ammo.

Chase runs into a SF Master Sargeant Jackson who's a big help in getting everyone on the train. He also runs into his old friend Captain Roach. A Roach who's impersonating a general in order to get ont he train.

Chase wants to kill him but Jackson talks him into letting Col Crawford deal with Roach. A mistake that will come back to haunt both Rachel and Chase.

Another great read by Patton.

This one has Chase, Rachel, Dog, Jackson, a murdering coward named Roach, a train, thousands of survivors, thousands of infected, an ex Navy SEAL named Max, his three sons, the Mississippi River and Rachel and John once again in a battle for their lives.

Five Stars and then some.

This third RTVPB if so good that I re-read it immediately. I did read the first two Plague books and. PLEASE,read those first if at all possible. This wonderful series by Mr. Patton was written as a complex serial....one book leading into the next book seamlessly. There is very little retrospective from book one to book two, or book two to book three so start with number 1.
I have over 150 zombie books on my Kindle Fire HDX and read about 4 a month since I got my first Kindle years ago There have been many very good ones and MANY very poor examples of the genre. Mr Patton's Voodoo Plague series is by far one of the better examples of the sometimes maligned zombie stories.
With the wonderfully fleshed out characters of John, Rachel and Dog you are pulled into an incredible story line. They are attempting a near impossible journey from the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia to the wilds of Arizona.
The only problem are the MILLIONS of zombies attempting to eat there very flesh and bones.
Millions is the right word, as the cause of the rise of the undead hits not once but twice. Lot'sa zombies and the really fast zombies are the females!
Read this great series of books for the thrill of zombie fantasy, military precision, horror and pathos galore and the love of man's best friend.
Don't pass on these excellent zombie reads. All of the rest of us can't wait for Rolling Thunder: Voodoo Plague Book 4!

*I DO NOT hand out 5 star ratings lightly. I gave this series 5 stars because the quality of each book is exceptional, keeps the plot moving, and the entire series overall is the same quality as each individual book. Fantastic work.* This is one of the best zombie series I've ever read. If you are a fan of Day by Day Armageddon, etc, this series is for you. This author's books are very, very good. They are the kind that you pick up and cannot set down. The kind that makes you look at the clock at 1am, know you are going to be exhausted tomorrow if you don't go to sleep, and then say screw it and keep reading. I really cannot convey how effortlessly he kept my attention through so many novels (12 so far in this series). Usually, the middle novels in a series lag behind in quality. Not so with Dirk Patton. The first novel pulls the grenade pin, and the rest are the explosion. Freaking fantastic work. You will NOT be disappointed in any way, of that I can assure you. I signed up for Kindle Unlimited SPECIFICALLY to read this series. I'd have paid double the price if I had to lol. I cannot wait to read more by him.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Journey Continues.

I started with 1st book yesterday morning, finished it, went on to the 2nd book yesterday afternoon, & started this 3rd book this morning and finished it this afternoon. I am a speed reader & I really liked all three books, because the characters are well developed, and it made me feel like I was really invested in the journey trying to cross the country. All during a huge Zombie Outbreak, trying to get John Chase ( the male lead character ) home to his wife Katie. John is still trying to get out of the East Coast in this book with his companions ( Rachel & a fierce dog named "Dog"). John is a former Army Delta Operator & falls back on a lot of those skills he last used some 10 years prior. There is a heavy military presence in all three books. I am a huge fan of this genre & the only disappointment I found in this book, is that it ends with a huge cliffhanger & I have to wait for book 4 to find out what happens next. I recommend reading books 1-3 in order, because it would be hard to really understand the characters without starting at the beginning. Female Zombies that are evolving, fast paced military action, and intense fighting are why I recommend the book. I couldn't put it down.

WOW!!! what a great book - I bought the audiobook to go with it - so worth it.
Man, oh man, that John Chase doesn't know the meaning of the word QUIT - Fast paced story that really interesting and engaging, the story is added to with Rachel and DOG. The world is ending and infected are everywhere. But Holy Smokes!!! what a ride - there is just enough military to let the reader know that Dirk Patton was military, but not enough to put you to sleep, It makes the story interesting.
I actually prefer the audiobook version so I can listen on the go and audiobooks 1-6 are fantastic.
Basic run down of the series is John Chase goes to Atlanta on business, the next day weird stuff starts happening. He sees Rachel running from infested through the swamp and saves her. The world goes to hell, John needs to get back to Phoenix, AZ to find his wife Katie. Along the way, John and Rachel find Dog and a whole bunch of infected and a bunch of Yahoos -
