5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking, hilarious and fun!

Captivating, beautiful, and witty, Let the Sky Fall is the perfect mix of so many elements into one whirlwind book. There is so much humor and fun, even with the rougher aspects. From a sweet and totally awkward romance to an intense and even painful story, there is an honesty which completely enamored me from the start.

Vane is hilarious, ridiculous in his own way, and the kind of guy who doesn’t take things too seriously yet isn't totally useless either. He’s a bit lazy, but with the right thing to focus on, he’s intense and determined. One of my favorite things about him, though, despite his ever-present wit, is how different he is compared to many other guy characters in the genre. He’s relatable, he’s genuine and nice, he’s a bit clueless…he’s just so real, in that way of the guy who sits next to you in class, rather than the guy across the room who scares you as much as he intrigues you. I fell harder for him with every page. More than that, though, I loved watching him change and grow, watching him step up and face things that are really pretty scary and intimidating at times… and he doesn’t act totally fearless. He wears his emotions on his sleeve much of the time, and he isn't really ashamed of it either. Vane is just one of those characters who blows across the pages, as alluring as he is amusing, with a hint of a mess to him as well and I couldn’t get enough.

Then there’s Audra, with an airy, lyrical voice to her that is almost stoic at the start, yet morphs into something so different, and much more empathetic towards the end. She goes through tremendous changes of her own, as equally well done as Vane’s, and the interactions, and play offs between these two is easily my favorite part of this entire book. I love Audra for her loyalty to not only the Gales, but Vane specifically, and I love her for figuring out how to also come into her own person in the midst of everything, even if it isn’t always a breeze. Audra is very much a product of her situation, with some stormy parts of her past that she hasn’t exactly faced, yet it also isn't drowning her in the way often seen.

This is definitely one of those read in one sitting kind of books—the plot sucked me in at the start. There are so many elements and layers, as intricate as it is straightforward and fun. From the back story so easily blended into the bigger picture to the seamless worldbuilding, Messenger’s talent shines throughout. This is one of those books that sneaks up on you with everything actually going on, yet doesn’t overload readers at any given time. Creative in so many ways and completely easy to fall into, this book swept me off my feet. The writing is fabulous, with two very distinct voices and styles which not only lend vibrancy to Vane and Audra but makes for vivid action scenes and settings alike. Holding the perfect blend of humor and emotion, Let the Sky Fall is a breath of fresh air and is now on my favorites shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect romance

My favorite thing about Let the Sky Fall was the romance. It was the perfect, non-cheesy, realistic, and interesting romance that I’ve been waiting for.

I was a little disappointed at first that the guy had a destiny and powers and whatnot. I really wanted him to be a regular guy that gets rescued by a powerful girl for a change. But the story grew into so much more than that. And it turned out to be better than I thought it would. I loved the world set up around sylphs because it hasn’t been done very much. Unlike a lot of fantasy books that I’ve read, Shannon Messenger went into a lot of specifics and details about how exactly they controled the wind and it was fascinating to read.

I predicted one of the twists from almost the beginning, but the twist went much farther than I thought it would so I still enjoyed it.

This has one of the best dual POVs that I’ve ever read. Each voice was very distinct and I never wondered once who was telling me the story. Vane had this snarky sarcasm that I loved. Vane has this endearing honesty about how some of his romantic moves just plain don’t work out, like they would in real life. Audra is a warrior and very serious with a lot of guilt and responsibility that she carries around that made it easy for met to relate to her. And their romance just worked.

One of my big worries about this story was the villain’s motivation. Nothing ruins a story like a bad guy who wants to destroy everything because his favorite basketball team sucks or something. Even though the villain’s motiviation wasn’t all that original, I could see it and it made sense within the story. It was enough at least to have me on board with the story.

There were a few cliche lines, but other than that I enjoyed the writing. This was a rare YA story where the adults were present and acted like normal people. They were quite hilarious actually at embarassing their son just by being their worrying, caring selves.

Vane acts like an actual guy. A lot of the paranormal romance I read tends to be a girl’s fantasy of a guy and it’s not at all realistic. Vane really makes this story. He was a great, intersting and well-rounded character that told the story in such a fun way.

Overall, it was an excellent paranormal romance that had the best duel perspective writing that I’ve ever read in a young adult novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Breath of Fresh Air

Didn't you like that air joke?

I loved Shannon Messneger's book, Keeper of the Lost Cities, last year and have been anxiously awaiting her YA debut. Let the Sky Fall did not disappoint.
First, she started with a fresh new idea, Sylphs, or air elementals. I can just think of the one in Shakespeare's The Tempest. So Shannon got to create her own mythology, and she did a great job at it! The Slyphs each have their own wind and its own language (north, south, east, and west). Each has their own strength, but when Slyphs start sharing their languages, they realize theat it increases their powers exponentially. Soon people want to master all of the languages. Only the Westerlys refuse to share. They see the corruption of those seeking their gift, and are hunted and killed one family at a time as each family refuses to give in. Now Vale Weston is the last Westerly. Audra has spent ten years watching over him, trying to make amends for her part in his parents death. Now she must help him discover his heritage and be ready to fight because the fight is coming to them.
I loved Audra and Vane. I felt like I really got to know them as we got to hear the story from both points of view. Vane was snarky and funny, but could be serious and intense when he needed to be. Audra was kind of Katniss-like, strong and a little broken, but loyal. You'll find yourself cheering on her strength and anxiously awaiting the day when she finally lets someone else into her life. I also loved Vane's parents. Most of the time in these books the parents are absent. Vane's were not only present, but observant and concerned. Imagine that, parents who notice that their son is gone at 2 AM and confront him about it! They were believable and a good addition to the story.
The romance is full of angst (I love you, but I can't allow myself to), but Shannon Messenger carries it off. I loved the mystery, the mythology, and the hope that things would work out in the end. Let the Sky Fall is the first book in the series so there was no bow on the ending, but not a total cliffhanger either. I feel satisfied :)
If you like fantasy, Let the Sky Fall is definitely worth a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect, unique paranormal romance!

This book is definitely different from other paranormal books I’ve read. Windwalking and sylphs are not something I’ve read at all on YA and I am really happy about something unique and new. Not only is this book different but Messenger did a fabulous job of writing about it! There is great world building as well as a wonderful introduction into the world of wind. Each wind has a specific characteristic that makes it different and this falls over into the personalities of its members. Every sylph is part of a family that is named after a wind direction and learn the language of that wind to be able to control it. There is a chance to learn other languages but a sylph will always be strongest in their native tongue. On top of this book being written wonderfully, there were some plot twists that I was not expecting and therefore was pleasantly surprised. I seriously cannot wait to see what book 2 has hidden in its pages!

Audra was great character. A times she was strong but she also had a vulnerable side that made her more relatable. She feels the need to follow rules/orders based on mistakes she made in the past but at the same time she is a teenage. She blames herself for a huge mistake in her past that she doesn’t leave too, for herself to make mistakes.

I actually loved Vane’s character. I read a few reviews that people felt he was written too over the top with some of his more “masculine” moments but I would bet that a good handful of teenage boys have similar thoughts. Yes he could have been written as the good boy who would never think of what a girl looks like undressed but how realistic is that? That being said he was never crude and Messenger always wrote just enough to get the idea of where his thoughts were going.

Don’t let me forget about the romance it his book! I was swooning hardcore for these two. The romance between Audra and Vane is forbidden for many reasons and yet they feel a connection to each other that cannot be denied. I love seeing a romance that builds ever before anything physical happens. This pairing is steamy and I cannot wait to see where book 2 takes them!

I went into this book doing something I try so hard not to do. I hoped. I hoped this book was going to whisk me away and make me fall in love and be everything I wanted it to be.

Usually, hoping about books leads to disappointment. When I'm disappointed in a book, it's hard for me to look past my hopes and dreams and find a way to love a book despite not living up to expectations.

Let the Sky Fall not only lived up to what I had hoped, it soared so far past my hopes that I didn't know what to do with myself when I finished. I literally sat in my chair and stared at a wall for five minutes because I just didn't know what I was supposed to do with myself.

The story is told from Vane and Audra's points of view. Vane can't remember what his life was like before he lost his family to a tornado. Audra knows exactly what Vane is missing, but doesn't want him to remember one part of it. Audra must keep Vane safe at all costs, but doing so puts both of them at jeopardy for feelings they shouldn't have.

The story of the sylphs is something I had never read before. The world of the sylphs is so wonderfully crafted, that I could almost believe there are true sylphs that walk among us. Messenger created a parallel world that fits so perfectly into our real one that I found myself looking at the trees move in the wind tonight and wondered who was controlling it.

The relationship between Audra and Vane is sweet and powerful. There's something there that I can't explain. It just fits. It's like when you see those elderly couples in love, 75 years later, and you know that there is just something between them that isn't supposed to have a name. It goes beyond love and I can't say enough how much I loved it.

The only negative thing I can say about this book is that I have to wait forever for the next one. I'll be reading this book several times between now and when the net novel is released. This is definitely a must read book.

Shannon Messenger is one to watch! This novel is the first in the Let the Sky Fall series, and I am eagerly anticipating the next one. The one thing I loved the most about this novel is its originality. We are introduced to the world of sylphs. I have never read a book that centered around sylphs, nor have I even really heard of one, so much kudos to Ms. Messenger for introducing an awesome new idea that is pure genius. Because this is a new idea, Ms. Messenger was able to create a fantastical world that was just plain amazing! I loved her writing, and there were many great lines throughout the novel that had me thinking and laughing.

The characters in this novel were well developed, and stand-outs. I loved Vane, who was hilarious and sarcastic...something that is great to have in a male lead character. Audra was a tough, kick-butt girl who is scared by her past, and what she thinks she did. The story is told from alternating perspectives, and was extremely well done. Not many authors can pull off dual POV's, and have it work, but Ms. Messenger accomplished that with flying colors. I can't imagine this book working and flowing as well as it did without the alternating POV's. This element added depth to both the characters and the storyline, and helped us understand and enjoy the story that much more.

The story was a little slow in the beginning, but it didn't effect my rating of this book. There was a large sense of urgency throughout the novel, but nothing really happened until the last 1/4 of the book. However, while I don't think much could have been cut out, it kind of bothered me.

The story flowed very nicely, and there were a lot of twists at the very end that will leave you guessing. I never saw some of the twists coming, and really liked that I was surprised at the end. The battle scene was fantastic and written extremely well and detailed. I honestly felt I was right there along with Vane and Audra. I highly recommend checking out this new series because it is sure to be a huge hit!

Vane does not remember his life from before he was eight years old. All he remembers is the bad tornado that killed his parents and the face of a girl coming to him through the storm. That girl has visited him in his dreams every night for ten years.

Audra has been sent to guard Vane until he is ready, and she holds the key to his missing memories. But she is also guarding her own secrets. When Vane starts to learn the truth of who and what he truly is, what will it mean for their relationship?

The book starts out strongly, and I was soon pulled into the world of Vane and Audra. I liked both of the characters, and I was pulling for them to get together as well as work out the larger plot.

Yes, there is a strong romance to this book, but I only felt the plot was getting bogged down once or twice, and then only briefly. You could feel how much the two characters cared for each other. It leapt off the page.

The alternating first person narration certainly did help with getting to know both the characters. Yet I never had a hard time following whose head I was in at any given time.

Young adults looking for a great new fantasy novel will enjoy this book. In fact, anyone looking for a great new fantasy series will.
