I bought this book for my 4 old granddaughter who is obsessed with the Swan Lake ballet. I had let her watch some video clips and they jump into the lake in the end. So, in the book, they don't die. They don't get to live happily ever after, but at least there is no jumping in the lake!!
Was a little disappointed they originally lost my package, as was my daughter who was very excited to receive this book. Still worth the wait, the book is vibrant and beautiful. My daughter loves it and has already had my husband and I read it to her countless of times.
This book seems to take a different approach to the ending of Swan Lake, perhaps as a means of not addressing death in a children's book? The result is still not a happy ending, however, and quite unresolved! My children were very disappointed when I'd finished the book. In comparison, when I played for them an audio of the full story, they loved it and really found a deeper meaning in the story overall. While this book leaves the story hanging on a cliff, the original portrays the overarching truth that although this world contains sin, heartbreak, and death, there is a better "world" beyond where love is reconciled. I have not yet found a children's book that contains the full story, but I'm sure there is one (or more) out there, so if the truth of the original story is what you want, keep looking!
I am taking my granddaughter to the ballet for the first time and wanted a book of the story for her to read and understand beforehand. This book is beautiful, better than expected and I'm thrilled I ordered it.
