5.0 out of 5 starsVery good story that kept my interest
Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on June 21, 2020
I wanted an audio book to read this and downloaded it and it said a free download but when you get into it the audio was only free for a month then you have to pay. I already have a audio free program and don't want to pay for another one. I read the book and found it very good but then cancelled the audio program. I wish I could have downloaded the audio book to my free audio program but did not know how too. Everything worked well and I enjoyed but will stick to my other audio program I have. Thanks!

2.0 out of 5 starsNot for everybody.

Margaret Atwood has become such a famous Canadian author that I thought I should try one of her books. As I expected, it was a bit expensive (c $11). I don't feel that I got value for money spent. The first 12% was frustrating author's self indulgence: a very long lyrical poem or song, a too-long annoying section of stream of consciousness, and a nightmarish delirium of madness. At the time I read these introductory parts of the book, I could not know their relevance to the story as the story not started yet. All in all, the introductory section was laid on with a trowel and just plain annoying.
The story that followed the introduction was expertly written and a real joy to read, just what I expected to find from a famous author. Unfortunately, by that time it was too late; the frustration and annoyance from the beginning section tainted the whole novel for me.
As a Canadian, I am proud that Margaret Atwood's writing has drawn international praise and I am sure the acclaim is well deserved. Unfortunately her style is not for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars An accurate and interesting sketch of mid-1800's life

I have never read Margaret Atwood before. She’s Canadian, after all, not a classical American or European author. But now I see, that was a mistake. Alias Grace is one of the best books I have ever read. It is the first of Atwood’s many novels I will be reading.

It is an accurate portrayal, among other things, of a time in Ontario before automobiles, electricity, cinema and paved rural highways. It is a retelling of the double murder in Richmond Hill in the eighteen fifties for which one perpetrator was hanged and the other, Grace Marks, while sentenced to death, initially, was commuted to life imprisonment. The question throughout the book: was she really guilty at all? It is a fictional account but rings veraciously and realistically true to the reader. There’s a little violence and a bit of romance or maybe I should just classify it as eroticism but it holds ones interest from page to page. A really interesting read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Epitome of Historical Fiction and Mystery
Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on March 28, 2019

This novel was, for me, the perfect combination of historical fiction, mystery, and psychological thriller. While the story does move slowly, it leaves the reader in suspense as it builds layer after layer of detail that makes you question everything you think you know about Grace. There is, of course, a great deal of social commentary on the place of women and the various classes, but it is presented in such a way that it adds to the story, rather than coming off as preaching. I love that she leaves it to the reader to decide whether Grace is guilty or innocent. Or, just maybe, like most of us, she’s both.

Wow...This book does not disappoint. It's a stunning portrait of a woman caught up in forces much greater than herself, and reveals how women used to have to contort themselves in every way to manage in a hostile world. I'm glad Dr. Jordan seems to have got his comeuppance but really there are no winners here, just a bone-chilling and very sad tale that nevertheless is uplifting. Told in Atwood's magical storytelling style. Quite a shock reading this after The Heart Goes Last - they are so different, yet so similar in capturing the depths of the human heart.

Huge Margaret Atwood fan, and I also love historical fiction. But not a huge fan of this book. The book spends a lot of time on letters being written between tertiary characters, I'm not convinced they actually added to the story in any significant way. It took me 3/4 of the book to get into the story. I probably only persevered because it was a book club choice. I'm hoping the TV series plumps it up to make it more tolerable.

5.0 out of 5 stars but I'm glad I finally did

I can't believe I had never read any of Margaret Atwood's novels before The Handmaid's Tale TV series came out, but I'm glad I finally did! I really enjoyed Alias Grace. The historical intertextuality, the mystery, the unreliable narrator, etc. were are compelling and extremely well done. I sped through it, partially because I wanted to finish it before the CBC mini-series started, but also because it was hard to put down!
