5.0 out of 5 starsGreat choice if you need high capacity / performance without paying SSD prices
Reviewed in Canada on August 12, 2019
UPDATE: Nov 19 2019 - 3 months in, running great, still fast, zero problems.
UPDATE 2: Nov 2020 - 15 months in and is still running perfect. No probs.

This review is for the 6 TB WD Black WD6003FZBX-00K5WB0

I'm using several WD Blacks in my current system, including:

2 TB WD Black WD2003FZEX-00Z4SA0
3 TB WD Black WD3003FZEX-00Z4SA0
5 TB WD Black WD5001FZWX-00ZHUA0

and now this new 6 TB WD Black WD6003FZBX-00K5WB0

After installing the drive in my desktop PC, I initialized GPT and formatted NTFS in Win 10 Pro 1903. The binary / base 10 conversion left 5.45 TB usable, which is what I was expecting. I don't like to fill HDD's past 90 - 95 % capacity for overhead / drive optimization purposes, so I consider this roughly just over 5 TB's of usable drive. I knew this going in - no surprises there.

I was concerned pre-purchase by several consumer complaints (mostly 2017 / 2018) about excessive noise and grinding. I'm really baffled by this. For me this 6 TB is the quietest and fastest of the WD Black drives I own, with the 3 TB WD Black WD3003FZEX-00Z4SA0 being easily the loudest, and the 5 TB WD Black WD5001FZWX-00ZHUA0 being the second loudest. I can only guess that WD may have previously had a bad batch ? or they have refined the manufacture process to eliminate previous problems? I say that because this 6 TB WD Black shows a manufacture date of Dec 6 2018, so it could be a newer manufacture process. And putting it through it's paces in benches and real world tests it is not as loud as my other black drives.

In addition to the attached drive transfer speed pictures, the drive will reach burst transfer speeds in excess of 1 to 1.5 GB/s maintained for a few seconds, monitored in Win 10 Pro 1903. The average sustained transfer speed, now that the drive is 60 % full, tends to be anywhere form 155 - 170 MB/s. That's a rough average and is dependent on transfer source size, what else is being used, etc. Note the attached screenshots show benches at 0 % and 59 % full, showing some speed drop off - that's normal as the drive fills up, but it's still excellent performance for an HDD. These are not SSD speeds, but neither is this a 6TB SSD price. The price / performance here is a sweet spot for high capacity / performance uses like a video editing source content drive, or similar scenarios where this is a companion drive to an O/S and program SSD.

As the drive is less than a month old I can't comment on longevity but I'll update and report back if I find any problems. This drive has the standard 5 yr warranty offered on all WD black drives.

This drive runs a few degrees Celsius higher than my other WD Blacks but it's still well within spec. Under prolonged load it tends to run high 30's - while the others are mid 30's. This is in an airflow optimized Fractal Design R5 case with additional 140 mm Noctua fans cooling the well spaced drive stack.

I do a considerable amount of editing and this drive holds a lot of my footage. I'm using Win 10 Pro and Sony Vegas installed on a 500 GB Samsung 970 EVO NVMe. I have 20 + TB of data spread across two desktop systems and archival backup boxes. That said I'm still a hobby editor and for me it's still just not feasible to spend the thousands of dollars it would cost to switch 20 TB over to SSD's. But I am seriously considering buying two more of these because the real world performance is excellent - better than I expected actually. I wish they were cheaper, but in Canada it tends to normally run within $10 - $20 of it's closest rival, the 6 TB Pro 7200 rpm offering from the other guys at ***gate.

The system I'm testing with:
i9 9900K
64 GB DDR4
Gigabyte Z390 Master mobo
MSI GTX 1080
750 W Gold PSU
4 x 7200 rpm HDD's
1 x 5400 rpm HDD
Win 10 Pro and programs on a 500 GB Samsung 970 EVO NVMe

10 / 10 would buy this drive again.

3.0 out of 5 starsOverall good but be sure to test it out when you first get it
Reviewed in Canada on January 1, 2020
Have bought several WD Black drives over the years. One 2TB lasted 9 years. Another 1.5TB is 10 yrs old and still going. Have 5TB drive that has been stable. Others too. I trust them far more than Seagate and others.

BUT I bought 2 of these 6TB drives. I tested both extensively (FULL multi-pass read and write of entire drive, all sectors). One is showing signs of weakness right out of the box, with intermittent trouble reading a couple of sectors (getting replaced via Amazon).

Note that no manufacturer fully test drives before being sent out, so there can always be bad ones out there. Small number will fail early, so get a good drive tester to perform FULL multi-pass surface scan (can take a couple of days to run). Glad I did before committing my data to it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Broken on arrival

Just received the HDD today. The package it came in had no additional packing material with it, just a small cardboard box in a large box sliding around. The cardboard box was a plain cardboard box with the tape on it already cut from someone else opening it. Once opening the box, the bag that hard drive came in was already ripped open again from someone else opening it. I plugged it into my computer and upon starting up my PC I get three very loud beeps from the hard drive, I am unable to format and use the hard drive because every time I try I get an error saying "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."

I will be returning this for an exchange in hopes that this was just a bad drive, or possibly a used drive that someone else returned broken. I bought this hard drive as new so im really hoping this wasn't a used hard drive.

1.0 out of 5 stars Can't confirm if it's actually the "black" model

Arrived not looking much like the picture advertised. Guess that's just concept art. Anyway, I tried to compare similar models online to this one as I've received numerous fake electronics through Amazon over the years. The aesthetics did look different from some but I went ahead anyway and installed the drive. Used Crystal Disk to check the drive performance and info. Came back with model #WDC WD60EZRX-00MVLB1 which to no surprise appears to be associated with a WD Green Drive. After checking the RPM's as well, again no surprise that it came back at 5400 RPM. Used several 3rd party apps and the model was still confirmed as #WDC WD60EZRX-00MVLB1 despite it being listed on the sticker as WD6003FZBX.

Returned immediately and buying from Canada Computers for the same price.

I am disappointed about it's performance. it feels sluggish it it quite noisy and slow to start up. When it is idle, there is a 10 second "start up" where you hear things moving and picking up speed. I do not recommend it.

So I bought this doohickey for around 189 Canadian rupples. Very good deal for a performance hard drive. BUT BUT BUT, problem is that the hard drives didn't work. I did 3 replacements but they were all defective. They all made loud grinding and banging sounds as if a gremlin was born inside my computer. Two of these drives were just unable to initialize at all. It is good that they showed immediate signs of deffectancy but I never got a working drive. So I gave up because amazon did not seem to put enough care in checking their stock. Also, the first drive they sent me was wrapped in plastics bags and not the original packaging which allowed it to get banged around in traffic easily.

I do recommend this drive if I got a working one because it is a very good drive based on its specs but sadly I never got to use one that works...

P.S I had a similar ish problem with Newegg but it was the first hard drive I bought of the same model that had the same problem of grinding and banging sounds

Garbage.
The HD wont initialize. Tried two different PCs. Tried diskpart, disk managment and more.
Wasted a few hours on trying to get it to work.
Now I will waste more hours with WD support or Amazon customer service trying to get a refund/replacement.
Thanks

1.0 out of 5 stars Dead after 11 months
Reviewed in Canada on December 31, 2019
Capacity : 2TBStyle: 64 MB CacheVerified Purchase
No noticeable signs prior to hard drive death other than intermittent slowness when loading up windows explorer on the drive; it was intermittent only on first load but browsing was quick.

For the 11 months that this drive was working, it performed absolutely fantastically. I never noticed the sound and the read performance was great. Hardly any complaints about the drive other than it dying very prematurely. I have a 1 TB WD Black HDD that has outlived this and going strong for more than 5 years.

Warranty on Western Digital's site says it's out of region, which probably means they're not going to replace it. Strange because I bought this on Amazon.CA and I am in Canada so I wouldn't think it's out of region. This sadly leaves me with only one option: to buy a replacement.

1.0 out of 5 stars Faulty after 3 months of usage
Reviewed in Canada on January 10, 2020
Capacity : 2TBStyle: 64 MB CacheVerified Purchase
Was fine for the first 3 months. Then after that it disconnects itself from my motherboard and doesn't work. I have to turn off my computer, unplug the SATA cable, turn it on, then restart my computer again and its back to normal.

No idea what caused this, but it's extremely frustrating since I'm an artist and hours of work can go in the garbage if I forgot to save before it randomly stops working. Not to mention its loud and makes grinding noises when its loading something when it does work properly.

Do not recommend whatsoever.

Update: Contacted Western Digital and after a long process (and having to pay another $60+) the replacement I got under warranty is extremely loud (i can hear it through my headphones with music playing) and its slow. At first I was impressed when I unboxed the replacement because I saw they sent me a 3TB drive instead of a 2TB drive (which was my old one). Turns out they rigged the replacement so it only counts as a 2TB drive.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dying hard drive on arrivel

Bought hard drive as a replacement for another dying hard drive from WD Blue had for two years, 3TB and was recently dying, fair enough sometimes HDD do start to die out after few years for some of them. So bought 4TB Black edition hoping can provide better support for a bit. As soon as I set up already hard drive has bad sectors and having a hard time reading some files. Not to mention sounds very obnoxiously noisy. Packaging very bad wrapped in a bubbled envelope without any indication of the package being fragile. Conclusion, very disappointed with Western Digital lately as they used to be my goto for hard drives.

1.0 out of 5 stars 2x 4TB Drives DOA
Reviewed in Canada on February 12, 2021
Capacity : 4TBStyle: 256 MB CacheVerified Purchase
I ordered 2x of the 4TB drives to expand my storage, and as always I ran them through tests before committing my data. IMMEDIATELY both drives showed as being full of bad sectors, and any that weren't bad were incredibly slow. I guess I'll have to go with the slower server drives, just for the slight bit more assurance that I won't have to immediately return the drive.

I have used many WD drives before and only ever had issues with Green drives. However, this was my first and last foray into the Black line, as the QC seems to be insanely lacking for "gamer" products.

Bought the hard drive from "Warehouse Deals" and it was shipped in a clear plastic bag in a lightly padded envelope so you can guess what happened. The drive was DOA.

Buyer beware before buying from "Warehouse Deals".
