This is a most delightful book, full of easy “how-to’s” and lovely photos. Jonni is known for her paper mache sculpting books and videos and this is a very creative addition. Even if I never make a “Fast Face”, I will be glad I bought this book. It’s a gem!
It is a delightful book. It helps you to free yourself and unleash your creativity. Jonni Good illustrations are just wonderful. It helps the novice feel less intimidating by doing something fast and fun! Try it you!, you will surprise yourself. This is a free foam fast faces wet clay. Endless possibilities to create unique pieces.
Fast Faces is one of the great art books out there. I have hundreds of them, but this one approaches art with great entertainment, fun sculptures, education, and displays psychological insights about art throughout. Even though the book is about unleashing your own creativity -- and Jonni Good teaches you how to do that -- it also addresses the psychological part of you to let you see differently, experiment differently, and learn differently. I look at all my art projects differently. I have more fun, I listen to what I see, and I see differently.
I showed the book to a friend who is a special education teacher, and what she immediately saw was the application in teaching children. At that I sent off the book to two of my sisters who have used it to have fun with their grandchildren, teaching and inspiring them.
There are many applications for this book, but mostly it is about how to see and not be afraid of creativity.
Although a big fan of Jonni Good and devoted follower of her blog, I returned this book. I wish I'd looked into it more carefully, but got carried away by the enthusiasm of the author for the fun things she is presenting (which I saw on her blog). The problem? The book is based 100% on using a particular form of clay, and that clay is difficult to harden to permanent if you want to save the result you like. (After reading the instructions for trying to save a good result I would have to say "impossible" is really the word) The clay is available on Amazon, but not in local craft stores - at least in my local craft stores - which include the usual national chains. Incidentally, I also checked the websites of the national chains, and this clay wasn't available on them either.
I love the idea of playing around with clay and sculpting, without getting caught up in a result - great approach, and if it had been that approach using at least a few clay options - AND that some of those options could be hardened and saved in a reasonable way - then I'd be giving it 5 stars. As it is, be sure you want to try this with a specific clay - and make sure you can find it and that you will be happy with making art that you won't be able to keep if it turns out to your satisfaction.
Only because I think so highly of Jonni Good - and own her wonderful first book - did I ante up 2 stars.
This is a small book, but it has big magic in its pages. It’s beneficial if you want to loosen up at any art form you enjoy. I have been following the author for many years and she is the best of the best! And a delightful sharing person. So glad I purchased 🎂
I have been a fan of Jonni Good for a long time,. I love her creativity and her books make paper mache sculpting look easy. But this book is so different as she makes us look at the clay and asks us to use our imagination and to be free of any preconceived notions of what it is we want to make. The clay tells us what it is and we go for it. It is not a big book but it is big on ideas and a great way to let us loose and use creativity in a new and wonderful way. Talent becomes a word as you do not need talent just a lot of imagination and the willingness to have fun in the process. I bought the book and I love the premise of creativity being universal and anybody can do it.
