5.0 out of 5 starsDid the job perfectly.

Was looking for a solution that allowed us to use a bike rack WHILE pulling a tent-trailer. This seemed like the best, and safest option. We after a total of 12-15 hrs of driving (much on bumpy roads & highways) it's still in perfect condition. *I should mention that I added 2 ratchet straps to keep our bikes from banging against one another and "just in case".
Only downside is that once it's on, you can't open your back gate. So be mindful of your Order of Operations! (BEDMAS!)

Wouldn't trust this bike rack for long trips or rough roads. Buying a Thule instead.

1.0 out of 5 stars Faulty product from an uncaring manufacturer that could care less about customer service.

I made the mistake of not reading the one star reviews of this product, which in hindsight sounded very similar to my experience. I purchased this rack specifically because it was an affordable option for use with my Jeep Wrangler that has a spare tire on the back. I installed it to the letter of the instructions, then checked and re-checked prior to use. I got one usage out of it carrying just my bike. Next time out, I added a friend’s bike (since it was advertised as being capable of carrying two bikes). Five minutes after leaving the house, while on the freeway, the rack failed. Fortunately, I was able to stop before going too far, and I also had another friend in the car behind me. The bikes stayed attached to the back of my vehicle, though were dragged a good 50 yards before I could pull to the side of the freeway and stop. Miraculously, there was much less damage to the bikes than there could have been, and more importantly, nobody got hurt and no cars were damaged.

I initially thought I must not have checked the straps properly. However, upon inspection (as you can see in the photo above, the stitching on the elastic loop at the end of the strap that attaches to the metal hook that grabs the frame, catastrophically failed. To me, this constituted a material defect with the product, and therefore something that should be under warranty by the manufacturer, Allen. Unfortunately for me, even though I wrote to their customer support and explained what happened (including pictures), their claim was that it was not covered under their installation rules. I gave them ample opportunity to rectify this, simply asking for a refund of the $79.99 I paid for the defective product, and not even seeking recompense for the several hundred dollars of repair for my and my friend’s bikes due to the incident. I was met with the same response time and again.

I can’t stress enough my disappointment with Allen as a company. Things happen, and products sometimes fail. They would have saved a customer, and themselves a highly negative review had they cared enough to stand behind their product. It’s a shame what $80 can cost you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Can't hold more than 1 Bike
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 12, 2022
Style: Tire Rack - J L FitVerified Purchase
Bought this for my 2020 Jeep Wrangler with the backup camera. Went with this model over other over the tire models due to the other models not being able to work with rear back up cameras. The rack seems to work ok with 1 bicycle, but I had never traveled any real distance, so I'm not 100% sure if that would have issues either. The first time I put a second bike on this rack, I drove 20 miles at lower speeds and the whole rack fell off my vehicle. Bikes stayed on the carrier, but they both hit the ground and got damaged. I looked at the rack after, and one of the arms that goes around the tire was completely bent, which allowed it to be pulled off the vehicle. I believe this was due to the weight of the second bike on the end of the rack. I went to the Allen Website and contacted customer service in regards to covering the repairs on both bicycles, as I had just purchased the second bicycle the day before. I gave them everything they wanted, except I couldn't provide pictures of how the bikes and rack were set up on my car, as number 1, I didn't think to take pictures before I drove off, and number 2, my bikes were in the shop and the rack is now broken, so I can't go and "recreate" the picture. They explained to me they couldn't cover the charges due to those two pictures not being submitted. This product is not worth risking damage to your bicycle. Best route is to buy a hitch bike rack.

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT USE ON 33 ONCH SPARE

DO NOT USE ON 33 INCH SPARE!
(Jeep Wrangler Rubicon)

Let’s start out by saying I was skeptical upon installation about how this was going to hold up with two bikes on it. Everyone I asked said I had nothing to worry about, and reviews all looked liked people were satisfied.. Especially reviews with customers having the same Wrangler as mine. Well, anyone in the NJ that wants another you can go grab my mangled bike rack on the side of the road on route 206.

Anyway, the max load stated is 70 lbs, and with two bikes we were at 58 lbs. No issues there. The issue came when we went over a bump, metal sprockets popped out of the rack, rack collapsed, metal bent, and $1000 worth of bikes were left dragging behind my Jeep going 60mph down the road. Thankfully because I was skeptical, I had both bikes chained to the spare tire itself so the bikes did not cause damage to anyone else’s vehicles behind me. One bike survived, one not so much.

I’m assuming this product works well for most applications with the 2000+ positive reviews, but do not use on a 33 inch spare tire. Fits awkward, and I should have known better then to trust it. Going to have to buy the hitch mounted rack and spend the extra money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Amazon property damage claims is a dehumanizing experience

Products fail, it happens and I have no I’ll will towards this company. When this product failed I was driving home on the highway as my bike rack detached and launched itself along with my two bikes onto the road behind me somehow miraculously not causing a horrible accident. Multiple cars stopped to help me scramble through oncoming traffic to untangle my mangled bicycles while trying not to get hit. Over two months ago I filed a property damage claim with Amazon. My product refund was processed right away though the third party they utilize to handle the claim told me I would be reimbursed the replacement cost of my destroyed bike over a month ago then somehow lost me in the system. I call every few days, I’ve emailed multiple times to both Amazon and the claims company, I’ve been given defunct phone numbers and transferred through hours of call waits without resolve. I’m sad and hurt and still without the funds to replace my bike that means so much to my health and happiness. It sucks to feel a company cares so little about you and I don’t know what else to do to get this resolved beyond posting a review here. Amazon please do the right thing and follow through. Thank you.

Update: 6.5 mos after product fail I finally received claim funds. It took dozens of calls and emails and finally a better business bureau process with the claims handling company though it’s finally over. Sigh.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this. It almost fell off my jeep.
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 6, 2022

I used this rack exactly once, driving 70 miles on rural roads, not expressways. Halfway there, I stopped for gas and realized the rack was slipping forwards on my spare tire to the point where it had almost fallen off. The metal piece that clips in to create a 90 degree angle between the arms holding the bike and the metal bars down to the foot had popped out, and the bike was dropped down at a dangerous angle. I was on my way to a camping trip, so luckily I had hammock rope and tied the rack on to my back tire. It still slid and needed to be readjusted. After all that, I still needed to get it back home after my trip and my bike would not fit in the back of my jeep. So between tying the rack on and using the straps and clips that are supposed to pull it down for safety to instead hold the rack up on the tailgate, I *only* had to stop and readjust the rack twice on the drive home.
I'm returning this. Do not buy it. It's unsafe.

1.0 out of 5 stars 100% garbage - product and company

After receiving a used open box item, scratched and missing multiple pieces (tube plugs, tire strap), total failure on 1st install… where the entire rack and bike fell on top of me and took me to the ground. 2nd try, with help from my girlfriend to avoid a repeat of the painful 1st failure, the rack was installed and loaded then just fell off sitting static in the driveway 5 minutes later. 3rd try, we put one bike on and she rode behind me around the block to visually inspect. Hook strap unclipped on the simple bounce of my driveway/ gutter.

We are in a Jeep Wrangler with 2 31lb bikes (as advertised to fit, and secure up to 70lbs.). If you value your bikes, vehicle, time, peace of mind… avoid at all costs. Major disappointment, danger, and frustration. Allen has very likely contributed to thousands of dollars in bike/ vehicle damage, and potentially life threatening car accidents.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very unreliable
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 19, 2021

Bought rack to take on road trip to Florida. The straps that secure the rack were very flimsy and broke on the first use before we took off on a 400 mile one way trip so I replaced them with sturdy come-along straps. Not an issue on the way down but I felt like the rack was moving the entire time driving down. On the return trip, however, I saw the rack move so I stopped and re-secured it. Going along the interstate, not some off-road trail or bumpy back road, one of the braces, the one that holds the bars upright where the bikes rest, snaps and the whole rack falls off the back of the tire. The only two parts that doesn’t fail on the rack is the straps that hold the bikes in place and the upgraded straps that I had been forced to use. I would not recommend this product to anyone. We lost $1,800 worth of bikes because of the less than stellar quality of metal braces used on this. Spend the money on a better rack and forget about this one. Will end up costing a whole lot more in the long run.

This is completely unsafe and garbage. I noticed that the bar seemed like it just wasn’t locked in there very well and the whole rack didn’t seem well built so I put a ratchet strap just in case and thank god I did. 15 minutes in the trip I noticed that the bikes were leaning a bit so I pulled over to find the pin has popped out. If I didn’t have the ratchet on mine and my wife’s bike would be on the highway. If I could give it zero stars I would. The biggest piece of crap. Unable to hold a male and female bike. Male bike in the back closer to the tire as the instructions stated. If I had the box I would send back with dog poop in the box with it.
