I laughed out loud. What more could a modern feminist ask for?

5.0 out of 5 stars Smart and hilarious
Reviewed in Canada ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ on December 18, 2018
This book is smart, witty and downright hilarious. The short pieces -- like the original viral article -- each hold their own and make the book utterly bingeable. You'll plan to read a few pages before bed and end up reading the whole thing. Do yourself a favour and pick up a copy, you'll be happier for it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Equality served with a side of titillating humor

Many vignettes are laugh out loud funny, but I must say I was particularly impressed with the literary and historical sections, which are next-level in their irreverence as they also show a deep familiarity with subjects and stories often relegated solely to academia while being downright hilarious. The writing here in New Erotica for Feminists is succinct and whip smart; even the longer vignettes are quick reads, packing as many witty wallops as possible into the prose. The winking-eye tone is consistent and clear throughout, which is no small thing for a book with four authors (kudos to them and their editors). Plus, by keeping most of the identifiers gender-neutral throughout, the book makes it easy for ANYONE to imagine themselves in these "erotic" situations as all good erotica, even the satirical kind, should do.

This is a book for anyone and everyone who believes in equality. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie said "we should all be feminists," and through its satirical prose, New Erotica for Feminists makes the case that basic equality shouldn't just be a titillating idea but an every day practice for us all.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Ode to Equality!

From my Instagram review:

"New Erotica for Feminists" is a world of decadent pizza-scented candles, Benedict Cumberbatch safe words, and Tom Hardy wearing "Wild Feminist" t-shirts and playing with rescue dogs. Oh, and Ed Sheeran pens an ode to Agatha Christie with "I Love Your Body...of Work".

This book is a fun play on the erotica genre and I could not count the number of times I laughed out loud or had to explain the title: "It's not what you think, it's better!"

So grab this quick read, enjoy the "salacious" stories of respect, all while watching "Salt" with Angelina Jolie over and over again, and by all means, eat pizza. And nachos, for goodness sakes, the nachos. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Truly a joy to read, a great gift for you or another feminist in your life. Also, there's a great list of ways to keep the work of achieving equality going at the end of the book. First on the list? "Read"!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious AND Important

When "New Erotica For Feminists" came out on McSweeney's, I loved it. It was brilliant satire and a gymnastic subversion of some of the tropes of porn (am I allowed to say porn on an Amazon review?) and erotic fiction. Then I heard it was going to be a book and I was THRILLED. I eagerly anticipated it and when it finally arrived, I devoured it in one sitting.

This is a book that is hilarious to read. And then you read it again and you start to think about the injustices that it is pointing out and you start to want to take action! Fortunately, the authors have anticipated this feeling and have put some very helpful tips about how to do just that in the last section of the book.

I think anyone with a sense of humor will get a kick out of this book. And maybe they'll think about some things from a new perspective. Basically what I'm saying is that I think this book should be taught in schools.

I thought the McSweeney's piece that started it all was brilliant, and was so happy to see the concept fleshed out (pun intended) and made into a book. I bought this book for myself and, after reading it, sent it to a group of friends who can also relate. It's a perfect gift to say "Hey, Girl - I get it. We've still got work to do." (I can relate so hard to the elevator button one, and think of it every time I'm in my office lobby.) The book is so spot on and funny, but doesn't leave you depressed after reading it. The action guide at the end gives concrete steps to help make our fantasies into a reality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Based on the viral piece. If you loved that...you know the drill.

This is a great book to read a section at a time.
You'll want to "binge" it because the stories are so nice and bite-sized, but resist. (Pun KIND of intended.) The satire is much sharper if you read a section a day, imo.

Oh, and don't be scared away or threatened by the title. :) There is something for everyone here, men included, and this ex-football playing Star Wars fan actually laughed the hardest at a "Scarlett Letter" story, and stopped to think after "the elevator story" so don't skip a single one!

I staged a photo that seemed appropriate with my kindle copy of the book in homage to one I actually saw on Twitter.

New Erotica for Feminists has something for everyone, and that something is very funny, sexy satire.

I don't want to give away any of my favorite parts in this review, but let's just say that at one point the star of a certain movie about dinosaurs stops by to make a certain type of pasta that may or may not remind you of another movie where these two dogs eat that pasta and end up smooching.

I fear I've said too much already. Just buy this book! It makes a great gift for Valentine's Day as well as all of the other days.

Where to start??? There are so many things I love about "New Erotica For Feminists." First, it's funny as hell. Second, it's bite sizeโ€”perfect for small interludes of subversive feminism throughout your day. Third, it's culturally and societally important. Fourth, it makes the absolute best gift. I bought it for all my friends and family (men and women) for Xmas and it was a hit with everyone except an old uncle no one really talks to. Buy this book. Read this book. You'll be a smarter, better person for it.

This book delivers a refreshing dose of feminism -- one-pagers of satire that's light and funny, while also being so on relatable, on point and important. I was constantly laughing out loud while shaking my head in "yup, been there!" solidarity. This book is for every type of feminist - every woman, every one who loves or knows a woman. Thanks for delivering feminism in an easy-to-digest format that anyone and everyone will enjoy.
