This book was perfect to get me in the fall mood but I guess I`d have loved it at any other time of the year aswell. Like every Olivie Blake book it was hard to put down, the plot was exciting through and through. I also loved the characters and the atmosphere she created. If you love novels concerning witches, the supernatural and magic, you should definetely give this one a try!
This book is thoroughly engaging. I couldn't put it down, even though it was late and I had a meeting in the morning. This story is beautifully written and examines the love and loyalty between sisters.
Ariadne and Aurora are twin sisters who endured the same difficult upbringing, which shaped them in wildly different ways. Their perspectives feel so different - it almost felt like switching genres - even though they're both searching for magic and connection. They try to take care of each other and generally fail, and they underestimate each other after they grow apart to grow into themselves. There is a lot of anger and so much pain as their bond is tested.
This book also looks at the family you choose for yourself. Aurora joins a coven/sorority and there is a whole cast of distinct female characters with different priorities, values, and worldviews, including a delightful and ambitious antagonist in Celeste. She, like Aurora, is obsessed with control; but, while Aurora prioritizes mastering herself, Celeste needs to be able to manipulate others. She tugs on strings of loyalty and obligation, instead of trusting people who love her. Like Ariadne, she wants to belong, but Celeste needs to be first in her friends' hearts. Celeste, Aurora, and Ariadne all want and need different things, but there are parts of themselves reflected in each other.
The climax is brutal. I was awestruck by the magic, and the emotional revelations are devastating. I loved it.
This book is a wonderful celebration of strong, powerful women and the unbreakable bonds of sisterhood. It was refreshing to read about such unapologetic female characters who would go to extreme lengths to get what they want. I love how Olivie’s characters weren’t one dimensional and how she showcased different facets in each character. I ended up getting attached to all of them and wanting to be a part of Tau Kappa Mu.
One of my favorite characters is Celeste Marlow. She reminded me of that saying where a villain would always see themselves as the hero in their story and I found that it was how Celeste viewed her actions, simply protecting the sisterhood in her own way.
Another thing I loved while reading the story is how Olivie’s writing reads like a movie. Each scene is so vivid and I could imagine how it would play out on the screen. I honestly wish I could watch this in the cinema!
Lastly, this story resonated with me personally in terms of my relationship with my own sister and I’m forever grateful to Olivie for writing and sharing it with the world.
Look, I'm a big fan of everything Olivie writes, but this was just fantastic. Not only is the plot objectively great (sisters, sisterhood, romance, WITCHES), but the writing is out of this world. Reading this, you just settle into the mood and the feeling — the way she moves the words and fully embraces a weird, witchy, gorgeous narrative that just launches you into this world. Also you will fall in love with at least four of these characters so, please enjoy.
An interesting and nuanced take on witches and magic. The theme of sisterhood was particularly powerful and touching. I enjoyed every single character; they were all unique and compelling. On top of all that, the plot was very exciting! I highly recommend this book; it is well worth your time!
There's something really powerful about the bond between sisters that's emotionally different from other bonds, and this book captures that perfectly. Even when the sisters are apart (spoiler? Can't tell if this is a spoiler or not), Blake captures the sometimes antagonistic, always loving relationship that they have with one another. Also, the other main character/love interest is FIERCELY attractive in that carefully careless way. A book to stay on the (kindle) shelf forever.
I love, love, loved this book. Olivie Blake is wonderful at world building. This book felt almost like a philosophical exploration of how magic works and I just want to read more! She created dynamic and interesting characters that are far from one dimensional and the parallel of witches' coven with the sorority was perfect. This book was addicting and I could not put it down. It constantly surprised me with what happened next and I hope there's more to come!
I’ve been looking for more magical fiction to fill my reading time with and this went above and beyond my expectations. It’s well researched magic, rooted in history in truth, with a dramatic and fluid storyline that covers the themes of sisterhood, loyalty, justice, thievery, truth, and, of course, magic. Stunning. I can’t wait to read more by Olivie
