Meets my needs for traveling!
Reviewed in Canada on October 30, 2019
I purchased this tablet specifically for traveling. I needed something that was portable and durable that would hold power enough for those long airport layovers or flights. I will be using it for Netflix, audio books, Spotify, and ready book via kindle.
-sound and visual on Netflix and amazon prime video are wonderful compared to what I was expecting. Absolutely no issues with buffer time, no pixelation issues.
-Easy to navigate -
-Everything in one place (my poor, poor wallet now that I have even more access to amazon)
-The camera is not great. It’s actually so poor I will likely never use it, but for me that’s not a big deal because I didn’t buy this to take pictures with, that’s what my phone is for
-Does not appear to be a bluetooth or other type of keyboard that is made for this ipad, which is too bad. One of the things I wanted this for was to be able to write while I am traveling. While this isn't a make or break for me (obviously because I still bought it).
-The charging cable is super short, which is too bad because when you're traveling you don't always get easy access to plug ins. However, it has the same charging port as my phone so i'll just be using my extra long phone charger (guess I won't be charging both devices at the same time).
EDIT - do not get this tablet if you're hoping to use google, or if google is your main cloud/email. Fire App Store goes not have gmail. You will need to use their web engine to search for google, then log in via the engine, which makes for only okay usability.
-This may be a con for some and a positive for others, but do not get this tablet if you do not have an amazon account. If you have an amazon account and do not plan to use it often, do not get this tablet. This tablet is specifically designed to be all things Amazon, even downloading free apps is via an amazon account.
EDIT - VERY restricted customization, very few apps. Now a big deal for me, because I literally only want this for netflix and and amazon e-books, but be aware you won't get to do much outside of that.
Physical - It’s light weight, feels breakable though. Time will tell on this one but its lighter than a lot of tablets. I like that the plug ins are at the top rather than the bottom, it’s a small thing, but it means when I want to put it down I can charge it at the same time as read. That’s big for me. It’s the small things that make this a great tablet for the price.
Start Up - First thing that will happen when you start this up is the set up, language, log in to your amazon account, preferences, then it takes you through a series of advertisements of amazon apps and products, then download your apps. Once you’ve done that, it takes you through a tutorial. Home page navigation is no different than an android or iPhone, swiping between pages, down for notifications, etc.
Apps - I went through and added the apps I want, Netflix, facebook, etc. But there are apps that are missing, for one, I use Discord a lot and I can’t seem to be able to download that. Using Netflix, the picture is wonderful for a tablet, I didn’t have expectations that it would be super high quality, but it’s perfect for what I want it for. The frame rates are fine, no lagging, no buffering, etc. The sound is also great, it’s clear, not muffled. This is exactly meeting my expectations for a cheaper talent but honestly, I don’t know there is much difference between netflix on this tablet and netflix on my old Ipad.
The Netflix app minimizes when you go to the home page, which was REALLY nice when all I was doing was trying to turn up the brightness and play with my settings, and still was able to watch. Love that small feature.
The sound is great for the music app as well!
Navigation - Pretty straight forward honestly, swiping pages get you through the different amazon apps (music, store, books, games). Navigation is ALL amazon apps, so you swipe to Amazon Books, swipe to Amazon Games, etc. It doesn't look like you can customize the pages at all, so if you're not a fan of having 4 different amazon stores on your left and right swipe, this is not for you.
4 OUT OF 5 STARS
I can’t wait to play around with this more, but already just right off the hop I can tell this is going to meet all my needs for a reading/streaming device when I’m traveling. Wifi connection is great so far, no issues or lagging between switching pages. Because I’m a heavy amazon user I like that everything on this app is integrated. I can purchase a book on my laptop using amazon, and it sends it to my Fire. All my pictures are stored on the amazon cloud so it doesn’t take up storage space, which means all 32G will be just for moves and books.
So far that’s it. If you are looking for a cheap tablet to watch Netflix, this is great. Because it’s so light this will travel wonderfully.
