This book started off great and then became disappointing. There was a cool, unique plot that became burdened with stereotypical reactions and cliches. As intriguing as the second book sounds, I will not be buying it.

This book is absolutely fantastic and I enjoyed reading it! The Rogue King is a great start to a new series by Abigail Owen. It was non-stop action from beginning to end. I loved the characters, and the world building.

When Kasia can't control her fire, which also allows her to see visions, she seeks help and winds up at a clinic where someone suspects what she is and rats her out. Kaisa is the eldest of four sisters, whose mother was the last known phoenix in the world. Or at least, she was until she surrendered her powers over to her daughters before promptly being murdered. So for the past few years Kaisa has been living in hiding, on the run from dragon forces that would use her as a political pawn. But when she powers being to flare out of control, she is exposed by people she seeks help from and finds herself caught by Brand.

Brand is a rogue, which means he doesn't have a clan, since the brutal fall of his family. His only goal is revenge and for that he needs the support of a dragon clan, so he befriended King of the Blue Dragons, and if he could bring the blue King a phoenix then he's in the clan. But things take a turn. I'm not going to spoil too much more but I just LOVED the dynamic between Kasia and Brand!

There was never a dull moment in this story and I am sooo looking forward to reading the next book, especially with the cliffhanger at the end! This is a must-read for paranormal romance fans. I highly recommend it!

The ‘Inferno Rising’ series is off to a fabulous start – one that gets the adrenaline pumping, the heart pounding and the passions soaring. The strong, sexy and bold characters are too die for… they have some uber hot chemistry and have sparks flying in every direction throughout their turbulent relationship. They both are very stubborn and are quite perfect for each other as they continuously overlook what right in front of their hearts while juggling everything that life is throwing at them which has some pretty heavy emotional turmoil flowing from the pages as well.

The plot is fast paced, extremely engaging and suspenseful, guaranteeing that readers can’t put this book down as Brand takes steps to secure his path of revenge. But with enemies dogging their every step, explosive battles and the passion continuously building between them, Brand has to entertain some new, radical ideas if he wants to claim Kasia. The author has also introduced more elements to her world which promises more exciting possibilities are in store for this series while some stunning ‘OH MY’ moments and unexpected twists keeps the adrenaline pumping throughout this energetic, exhilarating and satisfying dragon shifter story.

I acquired this book back in Feb 2021. Was in my TBR file. Well I finally got to it! I was so involved with this storyline, and fell in love with it. I wasn't even done 3/4 though and went and bought the rest of this series. Yes its that good. Oh and if you have a tendency to cry in books. Have Kleenex ready with books 3 & 4.

Die Idee mit den Drachen und Phönixen ist einfach genial, sowas habe ich zuvor noch nie gelesen. Auch die ganzen Königreiche und Kriege der Drachen bieten ein unglaublich spannendes Setting mit viel Potenzial, das sicherlich noch in den nächsten Bänden dieser Reihe ausgeschöpft wird.

Brand und Kasia sind vielschichtige, starke Charaktere, mit denen man definitiv mitfiebert. Zwar hätten beide etwas offener miteinander reden können, um die Beziehung noch etwas glaubhafter zu gestalten, aber wenn man die Umstände und all das Misstrauen zwischen den einzelnen Fraktionen bedenkt, ist die Verschwiegenheit wohl kein Wunder.

Der Schreibstil der Autorin ist auch sehr angenehm flüssig, sodass man der Geschichte gern folgen mag. Was mir besonders positiv auffiel, war die genau richtige Menge an Beschreibungen – weder zu viel noch zu wenig. Man kann sich alles perfekt vorstellen, ohne dass man von zu langen Beschreibungen gelangweilt wird. Einfach super.

Mein einziger Kritikpunkt ist Kasias Verhalten nach 75% des Buches.

***Achtung, ab hier gehe ich auf das Ende der Geschichte ein.***

Kasia hat Brand von Anfang an vertraut, sich auf ihn verlassen und auch wenn er dabei gegrummelt hat, hat er sie immer beschützt. Dann sind beide endlich zusammen und offiziell "Mates" und sie denkt plötzlich, dass er sie nur benutzt hätte, um "High King" aller Reiche zu werden.
Ähm, what?
Es ergab für einen dermaßen vertrauensseeligen Charakter nicht viel Sinn, plötzlich davon auszugehen, von ihrem Seelenverwandten verraten worden zu sein. Zumal ich es ab da extrem anstrengend fand, dass sich Kasia so überaus verletzend, respektlos und einfach daneben benommen hat, obwohl gar nichts passiert ist und Brand noch zu ihr eilt, um sie (und ein Dorf Werwölfe, in dem sich ihre Schwester aufhält) zu retten. Statt einfach mal kurz das Missverständnis zu klären, keift sie den armen Brand dann auch noch ständig vor anderen Leuten an. Grundlos.
Leider habe ich den ganzen Sinn für dieses Verhalten nicht nachvollziehen können, da es nicht zu dem Charakter passt und der daraus entstehende Konflikt auch nicht nur Story beiträgt oder gut gelöst wurde, indem Kasia schlussendlich noch einen Moment der Erleuchtung hätte, dass Brand sie niemals wegen ihrer Phönixkräfte benutzen würde oder dergleichen. Er war dann in Lebensgefahr und sie nur froh, dass er überlebt. Fertig. Das empfand ich leider nicht als zufriedenstellend.

Ansonsten war das Ende aber ebenso spannend wie der Anfang dieses Buches.
Die Kampfszenen waren auch sehr interessant – ganz besonders, wenn Drachen gegeneinander kämpften. Die Szenen waren wirklich sehr gut durchdacht und aufregend.

Ich freue mich auf jeden Fall schon auf den nächsten Band und bin gespannt, wie es mit den Schwestern weitergeht.

Brand and Kasia should never have made it together.

Brand, a rogue dragon shifter, mercenary, and loner, has been on his own since he was ten when something horrific happened. Since then, he has been singularly focused on revenge.

Kasia, a rare phoenix, supposedly good luck to whomever she mates, was raised by her mother and three sisters to never trust the dragons. You see, a dragon shifter killed Kasia's father because he mated with a phoenix and he was consumed with jealousy and then centuries later, a dragon king kills her mother. Her mother's final act to hide Kasia and her sisters to try and keep them safe.

Brand on a mission to help the Blue Dragon King so he can take down his target. Revenge is consuming him, that is until he meets Kasia. That first meeting was hot to say the least. I mean literally hot. Kasia has visions, but when she does…she explodes into flames, is blinded, and essentially experiences a full body migraine. As Brand watches one of Kasia's episodes, he quickly jumps in to assist. For some reason, his touch soothes Kasia, he soothes Kasia.

Kasia has been having visions for years, and the man standing before her now has been littered throughout them. She instantly feels as though she can trust him, but can she trust anyone? Brand's mission is to find the phoenix and turn her over to the Blue Dragon King, Ladon so the Blue King will have more power and maybe, give Brand a clan.

This book laid out a sturdy foundation for what I suspect is going to be a fantastic series. We discover how everyone has come to be where they are now. The Rogue King had an engaging story, characters that drew you in and were well developed, and the main characters had chemistry off the charts, it was explosive.

I definitely recommend this book and will continue to read this series! That ending has me needing to know what will happen in Ladon's book. I have a feeling Ladon's world is likely to burst into flames!
