I love Winter!!! She's the female action hero I didn't realise I was waiting fpr; fearless, brazen and wildly intriguing. She gives James Bond and Jack Reacher a massive run for their money, and it's so refreshing to have a female lead occupying the same space as them for a change.

There was so much I loved as I went on Winter's journey, the subverting of Snow White stereotypes were particularly handled superbly. The insight into a scarily realistic, near future web world fascinated me. Alex Callister's handling of high tech, with her career expertise as noted on her author bio, definitely made me feel in safe hands.

There's a bit of everything in this series - action, adventure, titivation. Winter is a woman driven by a determined energy not an emotional narrative, but her fascinating underlying character seems to slowly unravel over the series which I've been hooked listening to on Audible. As well as this fabulous debut, there is even more amazing stuff to come! Clever, original and packed with incredible nuances which are great to be able to revisit in print.
The sharp writing is evocative. I could see Winter hurling down ski slopes, hanging from rooftops, saving lives and the world, while showing the most wanted man in it how things are done.

Once you start with Number 1, you won't be able to wait for the next one!

5.0 out of 5 stars An explosive debut!

Winter Dark is an explosive debut by Alex Callister, and it introduces us to a fierce new protagonist who you won’t be forgetting about in a hurry. Set in an alternate world where murders can be bought on the internet through a website called Firestorm. Agent Winter sets out to apprehend the man behind it, and she is determined to make sure that he isn’t given an easy ride.

This debut blew away all my expectations. Spy thrillers aren’t typically my go-to genre, but I found that once I started reading this book, I couldn’t stop. Winter is a brilliant character; she’s feisty, confident, fiercely independent and is certainly not a person who will give up, even if it means that the outcome may mean death. I found that I could visualise every scene in the book. Alex Callister takes us on a journey across Europe as Winter sets out to destroy the operation Firestorm, and there is never a dull or a slow moment. You can see how determined she is to bring justice. Winter is definitely a force to be reckoned with.

If you think along the same lines of James Bond, then that is similar to what you are going to experience here. There are no quiet moments, and there is no question about it that Winter is the person in charge of this mission, even though she is has been hired to track the man responsible for Firestorm down. She knows what her role is, and she will see it through.

Alex Callister keeps the tension turning up a notch as Winter races closer and closer to the person who she is determined to find and bring to justice. I could quite easily picture this translating really well onto the big screen as the description, the fight scenes, and the characters are all so vivid.

If you’re prepared to be taken on a wild ride, then you will absolutely love this book. There’s heart-pounding tension all the way through, and Alex Callister’s writing will keep you turning the pages. I, for one, can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

I listened to it on audible, I have it on my Kindle and I am also getting the print. This book is amazing. It just keeps you so much on the edge of your seat that no one would blame you if you fell off. Alex has brought Winter's character to life so well that she just mesmerises you. I could not put it down. I've already finished Winter Rising on audible which was also a masterpiece. Cannot wait for the rest of the series. Well done Alex.

Such a good read. Satisfying. Thrilling. Gripping.
It was a brilliant bit of escapism and adventure to enjoy.
The plot was a fascinating and modern idea which I found quite chilling.
Winter is a fantastic lead character who I would love to see developed more. It's the kind of character I always wanted to be. I've seen people liken Winter to Bond or Bourne, but this is much fresher and far more engaging.

As I am on the blog tour for Winter Rising later today I thought it would be the perfect time to catch up. This is the first book I have read by this author.

The main character is Winter. Winter is a rebel. Winter doesn't really like the rules and tends to break them. quite spectacularly. I LOVED Winter. She is super smart and a whizz with a laptop. She is also very confident, sometimes overconfident which causes her a few problems. I wish I had some of her confidence.

At first, I found it difficult to read. I was enjoying it but I found I had to really focus to work out what was going on. I am not familiar with the GCHQ and how it works so I think it took me a while to get into the language. Once I got through that the story flowed and the pace was just right. I really started care about Winter and could feel myself getting very nervous and scared for her on multiple occasions.

This is not your average police procedural book. This is more high stakes, undercover almost spy story. I point this out because I didn't realise this going in and it made the first part of the book harder to read. By the end of the book, I was so engrossed I could not put it down! I was sad to see it end and immediately started the second book. I just had to go back to Winter and see where she went next.

This book was something different for me. I have watched TV shows which were similar but this is the first book I have read like this. I really enjoyed it and I will be on the look out for more.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good and entertaining basic idea, bad execution.

This is the strangest book I've read in a while, period. I don't want to be too harsh, I wrote exactly zero novels, yet the writing is really disjointed and hard to follow; Almost all sentences are very short, introducing a concept or a situation and never explaining it in full. It is, as some other reviews mention, as if I was reading a collection of Twitter posts vaguely related to the same story.

There are however other issues - the writing and consequentially the story suffer from confusing jumps, where the reader is thrusted in the next scene without any kind of connection; Like when at the very beginning: the protagonist jumps into a car in Geneva...and at the very next sentence, she's in Courchevel.
Very specific terminology is often used without any form of even the most implicit exposition and some glaring geographical inconsistencies will have you going back and forth over the text, wondering if you missed a chunk of the story - for example there is a taxi journey from Bologna to Paris that is undertaken in the short space of a few hours (they start at night and arrive during the same night). The journey, by car, takes around 12 hours.

This are all things that would not be a problem if we were talking about a movie, where the visual cues would fill in the gaps, but in written form they make it really hard to follow; maybe the issue is exactly that, the book seems to be written as if it was a pitch for a movie.

All of which, to be honest, is a bit of a shame because the basic idea is a nice, old style, breakneck romp in a fantasy world filled with mystery, danger and heroics. The protagonist being a confident, competent and attractive woman is a welcome change on the well established tropes of the genre and never mind all the little absurdities - from lugging around a suitcase with a big dude's corpse inside across Europe to the absolute ineptitude of border controls, police forces and even the "Italian organized crime" - it would be proper "shut-your-brain-off-and-have-fun" entertainment...if the writing was more fluid.

I really enjoyed this book. The main character is somewhat mysterious to start with, but comes alive in the telling. She is a super hero, almost, with her fighting skills, computer skills and tracking skills, but at the same time very real. The plot is very clever, and somewhat scary in how possible this could really be. I couldn't wait for the sequel.

Very hard to follow. It was just like reading headlines and attention grabbing social media posts. The continuity was poor, the characters cartoonish. I like Lee Childs, Mark Dawson, Simon Kernick. This was nowhere near the same quality. If you want a teenage comic with lesbian sex thrown in for fun in a written format then this might be for you.
