This fully revised and updated version includes a bonus chapter with lessons learned from a few years of implementation in real world settings. Lots of great takeaways but one of my favourites is “You can’t give a damn about others if you don’t give a damn about yourself.” Highly recommended for anyone in or aspiring to a management position.

3.0 out of 5 starsThis book is about building relationships with your employees and providing guidance to deliver better results. Here is the core concept
Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on June 29, 2018
I read Radical Candor by Kim Scott. This book is about building relationships with your employees and providing guidance to deliver better results.

Here is the core concept:
Bosses guide a team to achieve results. Focus on building relationships with your direct reports, which will affect your team's culture and determine the quality of everything that follows. Two dimensions for developing trust: care personally and challenge directly. Caring personally is about acknowledging we are all people with lives and aspirations beyond our shared work and finding time to get to know each other on a human level. Challenging others and encouraging them to challenge you shows that you care about what is and is not going well, and that you're committed to fixing mistakes that you or others have made. These strategies need to adapt to cultural differences between individuals, teams, companies, and countries.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Than Just A New Leadership Model.

If your looking for language to decipher the "why" of all ups and downs of your past work experience has delivered, "Radical Candor" provides the DNA to unravel specific factors/pitfalls that contribute to success and failure for individuals/teams. With brutal honesty, Kim Scott pairs vignettes of her life experience to demonstrate the core teachings of Radical Candor; translating those fundamental ideas into an amazing book that is easy to understand and apply.

Radical Candor is more than just a new leadership model, it pins down basic behaviours and skills to cultivate and the creation of work environments that not only feel right but work right - for the benefit of all concerned. I wish I had been introduced to these learnings early on in my mgmt. training - they would have made a critical difference not only in my own experience but the flow/success of others who were also impacted by my influence.

This is not just going to be a "one read bestseller" for me - it's not just a title that will continue to influence and elevate the success of workplace environment for years to come; it's an essential framework that can masterfully be applied to all areas of your life so that it can thrive!

5.0 out of 5 stars Kim shows the read that it IS possible to care about people personally while creating an environment where we expect the best from one another

This book should be required reading for all leaders. Kim shows the read that it IS possible to care about people personally while creating an environment where we expect the best from one another.

One of my favourite takeaways is how Kim clarifies that we should be managing growth rather than potential. Not everyone is on a steep growth curve and that's perfectly OK. In fact, as I was reading this section of the book, I was prompted to email a former employee of mine. She was the definition of a Rock Star in Kim's parlance - as stable as the Rock of Gibraltar. Radical Candor helped me appreciate her even more than I did while we worked together.

Thank you Kim. I've long known that management by diktat needs to die. You helped me develop a better understanding of how to help kill it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best management book I’ve ever read

Bought this book to continously improve my management style and get tips and tools on how to be better boss to my team. This book does not disappoint! It provides concrete concepts that are easy to implement and provides the author’s real life experiences when working at Google and Apple. This book is one of a kind.. it is absolutely not pretentious and will speak to anyone. It is life changing. I absolutely love it and I recommend to all the good, the bad and ugly managers that want to improve themselves and team 😉

3.0 out of 5 stars Be honest and treat your employees with respect

Good book. Ended up listening to audio book for part of it. Not sure all the observations are earth shattering, but big take away is you aren’t helping your business or your employee’s development/career by not being honest with them. Don’t need to be mean but need to be honest... don’t let things continue. Step up and address them. Employee may be waiting for this honest feedback too. Worth a read but don’t expect revelations that are going to overpower any good management style you may already have... just a few new tools for the kit.

Some thoughtful explanations and examples of ideas and concepts that have been around for a while. If you are not a fan of how Silicon Valley does business, this book probably isn’t for you.

2.0 out of 5 stars One time read, its good to know type of information but hard to implement in certain workspaces

The package was delivered fast and was in good condition. About the book, I like the bold assertion that a boss should ditch the mantra to “keep it professional” and there are some reasonably bold tips scattered through the book. Yet, if I am to be candid, don’t expect to be radically transformed in your leadership approach. I liked the idea but probably i would say i may not agree fully with it. I might be completely wrong here but i feel its a one time read book.

There are many suggestions to consider for improving one's leadership practices. The visuals help solidify the concepts. With some tweaks, I can implement many of the strategies into my industry.
