Laurie ‘The Baking Bookworm’
4.0 out of 5 starsAn entertaining whodunnit full of deceit and secrets galore!
Reviewed in Canada on August 12, 2019
The Last Resort is a character-driven story that focuses on the crumbling relationships of several couples who attend a two week relationship boot camp at a secluded, luxury resort in the Mayan Riviera in a last ditch attempt to save their failing marriages. The retreat is lead by powerhouse couple, Miles and Grace Markell, who appear to have the perfect relationship themselves. But as the days progress, the struggling couples end up getting much more than they bargained for when unorthodox therapy methods and an impending tropical storm unearth secrets, deceptions and manipulations leading to a tension-filled ending.

This was a well-paced story (which I read in less than a day) that engaged me throughout with a solid plot, interesting characters, a great baddie readers will love to hate and an enjoyable Big Little Lies vibe. The only issue I had was that the format took a bit of getting used to. It blends different points of view with celebrity news releases and an interview between an unidentified man and woman. Why this format was used becomes clear to readers towards the end but initially I found it a little confusing.

Overall, this was an entertaining read filled with deceit, secrets and an exciting whodunnit. With its beautiful tropical setting, The Last Resort would make an excellent holiday or summer read.

Celebrity power couple Dr. Miles and his wife Dr. Markell run The Harmony Resort in Mexico which offers couples a chance to repair their broken relationships. I’ll be honest, just from that I was already expecting a lot of juicy drama and entertaining couples. What I got instead was some alcoholic, pill popping, workaholic whiners. Am I being too harsh? Perhaps. I honestly didn’t connect or really care about anyone in this books. Even their “problems” which in some instances maybe should have tugged at my heart strings, did nothing at all. At times I even found myself laughing a bit just from the absurdity. I did however make it to the end of the book and realized how happy I was to have bought this on sale. Sorry guys, this was a miss for me.

I was halfway through this book before I started to actually care for any of the characters. They didn't seem to have much depth and weren't very well "fleshed out" by the author. Once I got past the halfway mark, it began to get more interesting and I finally learned to care for at least some of them. The "big scene" unfolded in a very interesting way, which helped to redeem the book for me. All in all, I'm glad I read it, but wish it had been more compelling earlier in the book.

I found this one hard to finish. It was slow in places, and the story was unrealistic to me. The writing was ok.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well-written tale of characters on the brink
Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2019
Marissa Stapley is a strong writer. She paces the novel smoothly, moving among different points of view, and the occasional news headline, giving us tantalizing glimpses of what went on AFTER the action in the novel.

As the novel opens, we know from a news clipping, that Dr. Miles Markell, one half of the power couple who make up the center of the retreat on an island resort in Mexico, is missing. He and his wife, Dr. Grace Markell, treat couples who are searching for ways to re-engage in their broken marriages. As we move further into the heart of the novel, interacting with the Markells, their full-time employee, Ruth, and two other couples who have come for a retreat, we discover that not everything is as perfect in the Markell marriage as they strive to make it appear. The other two couples have come to the resort to solve marriage-shattering problems, which will emerge throughout the chapters. But the Markell's marriage carries deep and abiding darkness, which will appear abruptly on a night when a hurricane hurtles at the resort, crashing into everyone's lives.

Here's a problem with the novel: the women are constant victims. I am very tired of reading about women who don't stand up for themselves, ever. There seems to be a movement in literature at the moment about victimized women, and I'm not exactly sure that most writers are sure about how to write about abuse. There's no convincing narrative here. Stapley falters when trying to make a case for staying with an abuser or attempting to get inside the mind of her female characters who are dependent on their male aggressors. It just doesn't work for me.

However, the novel is easy to read, and the action unfolds in a satisfying, deliberate way. The climax isn't unexpected, but the resolution will leave you feeling that all characters have learned a bit and changed at the Last Resort.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Book!

This book takes a group of couples, sends them to a couples retreat on a tropical island, gives them possibly the worst therapy ever, and ends, well I'm not going to go that far.
The story opens with you discovering that there was a missing person on the island and the story of what lead up to it is then told. There are a few couples who show up to this tropical paradise for couples therapy. A handful are important to the tale and others you are know are there but they aren't really acknowledged much. The main couples come with all sorts of issues that you learn more and more about as the story progresses. They all (or most) really believe in and trust the couple running the retreat since they are so well known and have great reputations.
Things start off shaky from arrival with couples quarreling and the hosts acting a little strange. Very soon people start revealing things about themselves and their loved ones, sometimes out loud and sometimes just in their minds. As the walls begin to come down and you get to see each person they may just be a bit of a surprise.
I'm not telling much about the story because it is a thriller so I don't want to spoil it. It's a good story and as long as you remember that's what it is you should be good with it (it has some heavier topics in it that some may not be comfortable with abuses of all sorts, very bad therapy). It has a pretty good ending and I enjoyed it quite a bit. It didn't take very long to read either. It just flows well and hooks you in so you don't realize how much you've read. Good book!

3.0 out of 5 stars Secrets and Lies surround these couples
Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2019
The Last Resort was a good book. Not phenomenal, but one I was interested in and enjoyed the premise. A visit to a resort with a few couples looking to repair their marriages? It was right up my alley. Plus, a little mystery to it? I was sold.
The Last Resort took secrets to a whole new level. That was basically the entire book. Secrets and lies we tell our partners and the people around us to perhaps benefit ourselves. It took me a bit too long to get to know the characters or have feelings towards them one way or another. Right off the bat I was not a fan of Miles. And his wife, Grace wasn't even really that likable. Then the 2 other couples we concentrate on (Shell and Colin/Johanna and Ben) were just too self involved. When the story came full circle, I finally had some sort of feelings for them, but it almost seemed too late in the game.
So imagine the worst lies and secrets you can keep from your partner and you have The Resort. Miles pulls it to an extreme measure and literally makes headlines, but you already aren't supposed to like him, so you are left with a story trying to figure out the other characters and if the plot worked for you.
Overall it was a decent book and perfect for a beach read, but I wanted more.

3.0 out of 5 stars Can't Decide
Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2019
I cannot decide if I like this book. So honestly I haven't finished it yet. I read almost half but it was just okay and I switched it out for a different book. I expected more of a mystery/thriller but it is a drama with some suspense. I do like how the story is set at a resort with couples who need therapy. The author did a great job of writing the characters and location as I was able to visualize it. I am traveling next month and this paperback will make a great travel book so I am saving it to finish it later. It wasn't a book I couldn't put down, but is one I do want to read the outcome of.

I wish I could give 2.5 stars.

Unfortunately I did not enjoy this book. I had a hard time finishing it but made myself keep reading in hopes it would pick up and engage me as a reader; that never happened. I did not feel a connection to any of the characters, so it made it hard to care what happened to them along the way. The story was a little choppy and felt more slapped together than thoroughly thought out from the beginning. I really wanted to like this but that just did not happen.
