Laurie ‘The Baking Bookworm’
4.0 out of 5 starsAn entertaining whodunnit full of deceit and secrets galore!
Reviewed in Canada on August 12, 2019
The Last Resort is a character-driven story that focuses on the crumbling relationships of several couples who attend a two week relationship boot camp at a secluded, luxury resort in the Mayan Riviera in a last ditch attempt to save their failing marriages. The retreat is lead by powerhouse couple, Miles and Grace Markell, who appear to have the perfect relationship themselves. But as the days progress, the struggling couples end up getting much more than they bargained for when unorthodox therapy methods and an impending tropical storm unearth secrets, deceptions and manipulations leading to a tension-filled ending.

This was a well-paced story (which I read in less than a day) that engaged me throughout with a solid plot, interesting characters, a great baddie readers will love to hate and an enjoyable Big Little Lies vibe. The only issue I had was that the format took a bit of getting used to. It blends different points of view with celebrity news releases and an interview between an unidentified man and woman. Why this format was used becomes clear to readers towards the end but initially I found it a little confusing.

Overall, this was an entertaining read filled with deceit, secrets and an exciting whodunnit. With its beautiful tropical setting, The Last Resort would make an excellent holiday or summer read.

3.0 out of 5 starsNot impressed

Celebrity power couple Dr. Miles and his wife Dr. Markell run The Harmony Resort in Mexico which offers couples a chance to repair their broken relationships. I’ll be honest, just from that I was already expecting a lot of juicy drama and entertaining couples. What I got instead was some alcoholic, pill popping, workaholic whiners. Am I being too harsh? Perhaps. I honestly didn’t connect or really care about anyone in this books. Even their “problems” which in some instances maybe should have tugged at my heart strings, did nothing at all. At times I even found myself laughing a bit just from the absurdity. I did however make it to the end of the book and realized how happy I was to have bought this on sale. Sorry guys, this was a miss for me.

The starting of the book pulled me in, I really enjoyed the character exploration and how secrets were revealed in steps. The ending was predictable and a bit over dramatic. Overall a good guilty pleasure read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sinuous, compelling, and timely!

The Last Resort is an ominous, character-driven novel that takes us to the idyllic Harmony Resort where the illustrious marriage counsellors Miles and Grace Markell are once again ready to help another group of struggling couples find their way back to each other. But like most things involving money, power, and privilege everything is not always as it seems, and hidden away behind those polished, flawless exteriors lies an abundance of lies, secrets, adultery, greed, abuse, subjugation, and manipulation.

The prose is tight and intense. The characters are troubled, deceptive, and vulnerable. And the plot, including all the subplots, keep you engrossed from start to finish with a multitude of twists, turns, obsession, deception, jealousy, familial drama, revelations, violence, and murder.

Overall, The Last Resort is an atmospheric, intricately woven, engrossing mystery by Stapley that is highly entertaining and devilishly satisfying.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Writing
Reviewed in Canada on June 25, 2019
I really love supporting Canadian authors and Maria Stapley lives in Toronto, like me. I read her book Mating for Life and really enjoyed it. She knows how to write women's fiction, very well, so I was surprised to see a suspenseful novel by her. She really hit it out of the park with this one.

I liked the way the author moved from each main character and gave clear insight to their fears and insecurities. Each was living behind a facade which they projected to the public. What was going on in their personal life was very different from that. An interesting portrayal of broken down marriages, secrets and lies.

I liked the way the author wrote, switching from one perspective to another as their lives intertwined in the resort and during the different therapy groups. I also love the title as these couples and their marriages are on their last legs and they go to a resort to try and fix their relationships...loved the pun.

4.0 out of 5 stars dark and twisty beach read
Reviewed in Canada on August 16, 2019
This book was aptly named, for The Last Resort was host to a couple getaway that would focus on getting their marriages back on track. Following the story line of three different couples, the reader encounters a myriad of situations that truly makes the characters make "last resort" decisions. The writing was engaging and I throughly enjoyed this story. The twists and plot turns were some what predictable, but I blame that on my over thinking imagination. To the average reader - I don't think anyone could have guessed that ending. A great summer read, especially if you like moderately dark and twisty tales.

Thrilling, disturbing, dark and mysterious! A tale filled with secrets and lies, so much turmoil and intense emotions! It reminds me of the spilt story POV that all intertwined in the end on Big Little Lies! Really unique writing style in this book but really really enjoyable!

4.0 out of 5 stars Triggers warnings

I really liked this book . I know people use the word “trigged” a lot these days but I mean it from a place (a bit ironically considering the book) bc of a lot of therapy and being in and out of treatment facilities for CPTSD among other things. A lot of television shows, movies and some books come with warnings without it spoiling it. I think this is a great book but should have warnings attached . If they were present I missed them. I wouldn’t have gotten this book had they been present.

4.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars - Intriguing story touching on serious subjects
Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2019
At the Harmony Resort in Mexico, famous doctors Miles and Grace Markell offer the “last resort” for couples whose relationships are in trouble. Two couples in the lastest group signing up for the Markell’s two-week session are Colin and Shell Williams and Johanna Haines and Ben Reid. These couples are keeping secrets from each other, but some of the biggest secrets of all may be the ones hidden by Miles and Grace.

This book wasn’t at all what I had expected. I thought it was going to be a lighter, suspense story, but it covered some very serious subjects such as spousal abuse and sexual assault. The counseling sessions led by Grace were interesting and it was intriguing to see the truth slowly come out about the two couples going through therapy. It was hard to get to know Ben and Colin, but I really liked the characters of Johanna and Grace, but despised Miles and Grace’s assistant Ruth.

I like the way the story was told with secrets slowly unfolding, “TMZ reports” showing the gossip surrounding some of the events at the resort, and transcripts from a therapy session for an unknown subject. The author’s descriptive language paints a picture of the setting and some of the troubles the characters are experiencing. Once I realized the book wasn’t what I was expecting, I enjoyed it more. However, I think the book would have had more impact if the character of Miles hadn’t been so over-the-top. There are real-life villains out there, but he often came across as a caricature to me which made it harder for the story to resonate with me. There are moments of the book I liked a lot, including the ending and the epilogue, but couldn’t connect will all portions of the story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really entertaining and a fantastic premise
Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2019
I loved so much of this book! It’s a very exciting thriller with a fantastically applicable title, centering on a relationship counseling resort on a Mexican island. The married couple who run the fancy resort seem to be perfect, but they’re each battling their own demons. Many couples come to the program, but the book focuses on two: one couple who have suffered a terrible loss and can’t rekindle the happiness they once knew, and another couple who have never seen eye to eye. The woman in the latter couple has just been through a terrible ordeal: a social worker, she helped a woman escape her abusive husband, only to be violently threatened by the husband.

There are a couple of subplots that I didn’t find interesting, including a lesbian relationship that seemed a little far-fetched and a “harassment” that will probably speak to most female readers but didn’t seem too traumatizing to me. My criticisms are very minor, so if they don’t bother you, you’ll probably love the entire book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and found myself unable to put it down. It’s split into sections (Day One, Day Two, etc.) so the readers really get immersed in the resort life and the counseling program. Interspersed into the novel’s main events are faux news articles about the upcoming hurricane set to hit the island and a transcript involving two unnamed characters discussing after-the-fact events. It’s very intriguing, fast-paced, and the scenes play out in readers’ heads like a movie. Check this book out if you like the ominous cover and the double meaning of the title. It’s very entertaining.
