I just happened to stumble upon this title whilst browsing through the Amazon recommendation list. I thought there was a lot of positive feedback and as the film hardly cost me next to nothing, I thought what the heck, I have nothing to lose by buying it! This film is great, no doubt about. Robert Downey Jr. plays a phenomenal part, as well as Shia LABeouf as his younger counterpart. Channing Tatum again, excellent and Eric Roberts who plays his older counterpart, again, even though that one scene at the end, just makes you feel the whole film. The author of the book (with same title), as well as writer and director for this film, encapsulates you into this life bubble that he has lived prior to leaving Queens, New York moving to California for a better life, leaving the sadness of death, poverty, physical abuse (his friend Antonio by his father) and the threat by a gang on his life, which sadly took the innocent life of his Scottish friend Mike/Mick. Loads of people have copied and pasted the general storyline of this film, but all I can say is, you have to see it to appreciate it and it is an excellent film which I highly recommend. I would be very surprised if there was anyone who would give anything negative to this review (well I hope not anyway!) If you like true life movies, based on real life experiences and events, then this is the film for you
If you are a fan of recent Channing Tatum or Shia LaBeouf movies then this might not be your cup of tea.
But if you are not a fan of their recent films and were put off as a result, then I urge you to give this film a try whatever you think you know about the cast.
Dito Montiel gives his own story an excellent direction with a cast of largely unknown actors (at the time!). Most of all it exudes a sense of living in Queens, for good and for bad. This isn't a pretty film and it isn't always a pleasant film, but you will find it hard to come away without being affected in some way.
Excellent cast. Just love this! I have watched it twice on tv and was made up to find it on dvd. Such a good story of tough teenagers on Americas streets. Good soundtrack too - takes you back! 10 out of 10!
i wasnt sure what to expect when i bought this but it was much better than expected although i dont buy that robert downey is a younger a shia they look like nothing on another but this was a great coming of age movie.
