4.0 out of 5 starsNo BS, straight up tools to use
Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on December 29, 2022
I mean its straight tools that we can use for health, wealth and wisdom. Sometime it feels like it is written for privileaged class only, as some tools can be expensive. He does give a disclaimer around using what feels right. This is one review, I will keep updating as I go through the tools and apply it.

3.0 out of 5 starsClean Up Your Act, Gain a Wider Audience!
Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on March 27, 2017
There are a few good pointers in this book while at least half of them are downright strange. I probably would have given the book a 4 star rating if it weren't for the fact that Tim Ferriss has got the finesse of a cave man in how he just loves to swear practically every second word. No wonder he is so in awe of the people that he interviews, whether they be good or bad seeing that he sounds like he was born in a bar. From that perspective, just about anyone would come across as impressive to him. Sorry Tim, your writing style really has to improve in order to stop coming across as some lackey attempting to interview persons of interest. However, if you really want to get serious about trying to impress a wider range of people through upgrading your style, then I would suggest that you could try reading 2 or 3 Larry King books on interviewing people. This way, you'd really be able to have no excuse for coming across as some overly impressed bar fly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably your best book so far, Tim.

I have put 5 stars because it is the most fascinating book I have read this year (and I read a lot). However, there plenty of things I don't completely agree with. Instead of dropping the score, I prefer to write detailed a review.

First, it is a great thought-provoking book. If you're someone who consider yourself being incredibly result-oriented, who likes to push boundaries and challenge paradigms, well this book will be to you the equivalent of cocaine for a big spider (there are some very funny videos online about it). I personally loved it, and I am really taking my time to re-read it carefully.

Basically, there are 3 sections: Health, Wealth and Wisdom/Happiness. I absolutely loved the 2 last one without a doubt (there are TONS of hidden gems) but I still have some reserves for the Health section.

Although Tim and I seem to share a lot of points of view, I think the health section is way too narrow minded. I don't think you can summarize being healthy only by looking at body fat, and the ability to lift heavy weights. I also think it focuses too much on the Keto diet, which is most definitely interesting idea, but doesn't mention other diets that can be even healthier to you. What about the Paleo diet? What about reducing the level of inflammation or autoimmune response? Or maximizing the ratio of good versus bad bacteria in your gut? It is one of the biggest energy sapper you have nowadays. At the end of the day, we all want to be energetic and smart, not necessarily have 6 pack abs.

Also the book talks about taking Hallucinogen for brain health. I am not too sure about that, but to say I'd say: "yeah, okay, maybe...". However, what else that makes the brain healthy? Playing a musical instrument and learning new languages are extremely beneficial for the brain.

Also, it talks a lot about taking cold shower before going to bed. Maybe this tip is valid in California, however, while living in Canada in cold houses, this tip doesn't make any sense. You're cold all day and you end up being sick of it. However, I did experimented with temperature differences, and a very long hot shower before going to bed does improve sleep significantly.

Tim, if you want to reach me to discuss few points, I'm easy to find.

Cheers from Montreal

4.0 out of 5 stars A thorough read, mixed with some 4-hour podcasts changed my views on this book.

"Bad. Sorry, my unabashed review was censored for some reason. Don't talk down about this book, its poor editing, or Amazon's involvement in its production if you're going to write an honest review."

That's what I originally wrote, despite having a healthy man-love-thing going on for Tim, his brand, and the many pros he's interviewed over the years. The truth is, this book seems intended merely to capture the key points various guests on the 4-hour podcast over the last two or three years. I know that's what the synopsis says too, but I just didn't get it at first, and will quickly explain why:

I guess I hadn't listened to enough of Tim's podcasts before reading the book. I originally left a much more scathing review than the one in quotes above, but it didn't make it past Amazon's review team. I truly felt jipped at first, despite getting a deal by pre-ordering. I just didn't get the format Tim is trying to offer here until listening to his podcasts and getting a thorough feel for their (the podcast's) structure.

In essence, there's lots of knowledge drops in this book. Now I've been converted, and become a voracious podcast listener of the 4-hour podcast, I see value in owning Tools of Titans. It's like having cliff-notes of all my favorite sessions (Dom D'Agostino, Peter Attia, The Arnold, Tony Robbins, and so many more). It's ridiculous how intelligent his guests are and I just love the lab-based keto knowledge many of them have to offer.

Tim is also a master of questions and coaxes oh-so-much out of these folks that others likely could not.

Truly, I still feel this book needs some polish in the grammar department; particularly in the first 100 pages. There are several spelling mistakes and strange repetitions (ie., they told me that they told me that...) This was a major crux for me at first, knowing Tim and his hypochondriac level of perfectionism, and expecting that angst to find it's way to the editing side of the book.

This book led me to delve further into the brand and I'm glad for it. I listen to at least one new (or old) podcast every day while hiking, etc.

Great job Tim. Hope you clean up the errors. It's not like you don't have a gaggle of proofreaders to choose from!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Guide

You may think you can just pick up and read this book. No, no! First, it's helpful to first leaf through the combined works of Tim Ferriss (aka The Four Hour Work Week, The Four Hour Body, and The Four Hour Chef). Done? You may now think that you can start to read this book. Nope! First, go online, and listen through a dozen hours worth of podcasts of the Tim Ferriss Show, each of which is chronicled in Tools of Titans. Now you're set! See, the Tools of Titans is not really a stand alone book - it's a list of everything Tim Ferriss has done so far. And as such, it's not bad. But it's essentially the Coles Notes of his life.

If you're completely new to Ferriss and have no interest absorbing the entirety of his work, I would suggest leafing through this book, and taking note of the topics that are of interest to you, then going online and listening to the podcasts about those specific topics. You'll get a lot more detail about what you want to hear, and you'll trim the unnecessary fat.

All in all, you'll find plenty of helpful tidbits, on diet, exercise, athletic performance, and productivity. Just take it with a grain of salt and do your own research. A steady regiment of beet powder, MCT oil, and sardines might not be best for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book of the Year

Would I buy again:
Yes, I also purchased a copy for someone else for a gift.

The best book I’ve read this year. The tools in this book are practical; I found I was applying simple things from the book without even thinking about it. It shows that failure is part of the process towards greatness and that creativity is something that anyone can cultivate.

I believe in the power of morning routines; currently perfecting my own. The habits of the Titans described in this book provide examples of experiments to try in my own life.

You are not flawed.
You are human.
You have gifts to share with the world.
And when the darkness comes, when you are fighting the demons, just remember: I’m right there fighting with you. You are not alone

-Tim Ferriss

This book is more than a collection of great quotes. It’s about the stories behind the quotes. Positive thinking is only one part of the equation. Thinking is nothing without action. The ability for Titans to take time to enjoy life, rather than always being busy or productive really impacted my perspective. If something matters, someone will make time.

If you have not read it, take the opportunity to get yourself a copy and read it. Might not change your life, but give a great perspective on the small things you can do, and what other people are doing.
