My 4 years old daughter asks often to read this lovely book. Adorable illustrations, rhymes that helps to remember early the text. At the end there's some colouring pages.

I’ve been vegan for a decade and wanted to do more educational work with my kids on the topic. I bought this book but the more I thought about the phrase “did you steal my milk” I came to the conclusion that may not be the best way to teach very impressionable young children about veganism. The topic of educating children on veganism can be a bit complex figuring out a way to teach compassion and respect for all. We all know kids can go around with no filter at times and it just leaves me with an icky feeling thinking about my kids potentially grasping onto this “did you steal my milk” phrase and potentially accosting their peers. There’s a way to go about having conversations with peers on veganism and potential off the bat negative accusations doesn’t open the door for understanding and a change of mind but would rather build a wall of defensiveness. Especially when their peers are other young children that really don’t have a knowledge of doing anything different from what they are taught.

The book had a lot of repetition and I use other books with tons of repetition to teach my kids foreign languages. I know this form of repetition works and really sticks with young children. I don’t want this phrase to stick with my kids.

I would suggest “That’s Not My Momma’s Milk” as a much better alternative for the topic of dairy and why we don’t consume dairy of other species. It’s basically the same story of the ugly duckling trying to find his momma. The book makes it clear that milk made by an animal should be consumed by that animals’ offspring. At the end there is a breastfeeding mom so it also helps to normalize that as well.

I also recommend “Why We Don’t Eat Animals” which goes into explaining really well why we choose veganism, the reasons why others don’t, and how amazing veganism is.

5.0 out of 5 stars NOT JUST a Perfect book for my 18 months old son!!!!!

Perfect book to read because: 1. Big bright pictures with not too long text on each page. 2. Lots of animals - my 18 months old son is still CRAZY about farm animals yet ready to be: 3. Introduced to colours. 4. Very good, simple yet funny and not pointless rimes with the words we are just learning (milk, cup, wobbly as if the writer used our word cards for inspiration!!!) 5. We obviously care about poor cows and animals and there is only soy milk in our home. 6. The pictures are perfect too: cartoonish yet realistic. I love the ones with cow and her baby calf. My son could so relate to this since I am still breast feeding him and we are vegan.

Delivery was very prompt and packing was excellent.

4.0 out of 5 stars A hard but important message.

I completely agree with the message of this book and feel kids need to learn that humans are the only animals taking the milk of another animal. Vegan kids will have a good laugh. And non vegan kids’ parents may need to talk to kids about the term “stealing” so they don’t feel bad, as kids just follow what their parents have taught them. They will come away with a new perspective.

Cute book with simple rhymes and an important message. My kids enjoy this and it helps them to think a bit more 'out of the box' than thinking that there's only one way of getting milk. It's easy for little ones to understand and a lovely story to enjoy.
