5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Jacob Nordby!

I had expected to enjoy this book. What I hadn't expected was to find myself in tears over my morning coffee as I realized that Joy had indeed left my life (and although I hadn't noticed at the time, I could now remember many of the exact moments when that happened). So, after the initial read through - in the first 24 hours after downloading the ebook - I am now reading through it again, slowly, purposefully, with an intent to savor Joy as often as I can.

Jacob Nordby is a thoughtful, sensitive, and compassionate author, with deep wisdom to share. I am so pleased to have discovered his work. He has, through his writing, helped me to embrace my different and quiet ways and now to realize that Joy is not something to be pushed down and ignored, but something that I had long forgotten, and am now working to return to my every day. And I am grateful beyond words.

I love that this book reflects on joy being the measure of success. Jacob Nordby states, "Success is the ability to cultivate and experience joy in all aspects of your life." Filled with insight and practical activities to stoke your inner light, this book is a transformational tool to help you heal your inner world and mindfully get to that state of joy.

I had access a little before this book was released for the purposes of writing a review but I had pre-ordered the book so I am a verified owner. This book is unlike most self improvement books. I find it generally you can pick up a self improvement book and scan through it and pick a chapter at random and you're pretty much going to get most of everything you can get from the whole book because most self improvement books could be condensed into about the size of one or two blog posts. That is not how Jacob writes. This book has each chapter building upon the chapter before. And it does so with an underlying melodic poetic style. It is available on audiobook and can be a beautiful listen. I enjoyed reading it allowed from my phone or Kindle. Because the words were so beautiful. The chapter that I'm going to speak of today is chapter seven which is the creative formula - magic. In this chapter the very issue that I had been working on for well over a year was resolved. When working on my fiction I would get overwhelmed and stop and put it aside for days or weeks or months and pick it up and try again and get overwhelmed. I would research how to handle writer's block and got nowhere. I worked on whether I felt like writing this would lead to failure and I got nowhere. What made the turnaround for me was understanding the value of creative tension.

Before meeting Jacob norby in a webinar that he was running, I had not thought of fiction writing as an art. It certainly is creative but I didn't consider it one of the arts to me art was painting or sculpture or textile art or music. But creativity and the expression of our comes in many forms including storytelling. Creative tension feels exactly like overwhelm for me and that is also how he describes it. And it's found in many different artists processes. Painters have this sculptures have this musicians especially those who are writing music experience this. Norby took a situation that I felt was debilitating and turned it on its head and presented it to me as an essential part of the creative process. And then he goes on to give me steps to take to deal with it. and of course I'm not going to spoil anyone's lovely experience of discovering these steps for themselves.

This book is written by a very authentic individual who is very present even in a large crowd. And he is very present in his writing. The authenticity of his expression is very clear. He does not add extra wordage just to make a book a certain length. He expresses himself with a beautiful cadence and word choices that are magical.

I intend to read this book multiple times and I cannot recommend it enough to any artist. I hope that you enjoyed as much as I have and five stars is insufficient to express the joy this book has brought to my life.

I picked up this intriguing book not really knowing what to expect. I’ve been seriously writing for 16 years and I also teach writing and am well-versed in different creative strategies and practices. I was wondering what I could possibly find in The Creative Cure that would be new to me and shift my way of thinking about what it means to be a writer and creative.

Well, then I started reading and Jacob Nordby blew the top of my head off within the first couple of chapters.

As I turned the pages I could feel myself having a visceral reaction to Nordby’s words, his reassurance that we are all creative, and that we all know how to do this nourishing, beautiful thing—this creating something out of nothing—from the time we are children. It’s just that we’re ripped away from our natural creative tendencies by the pressure to conform to society’s expectations of what a productive person looks like, and also that we experience rejection of our earliest creative efforts. I definitely know what that’s like, as I had a scarring experience with a creative writing teacher as a young adult. I was told that I wasn’t any good at writing and that I should find something else to do with my life, and so I stopped writing for seven years. I can only imagine how the situation would have been different for me if I’d had access to Jacob Nordby’s book at that time. I feel it’s safe to say I wouldn’t have lost those seven years.

The Creative Cure is for any creative person, no matter where they are on their path. You can have many years of experience with writing, or in the visual arts, or with acting, dancing, or any other type of creative self-expression, and still this book will speak to you. In contrast, you can also be a total newbie to the creative process, someone who has always wanted to be creative but has never known where to start, and this book will help you too. There are exercises and practices included with every chapter that are concrete and actionable and that can get even the most stuck person moving again.

I’m recommending this book to all of my clients and putting it on the “recommended reading” list for all my classes, along with such classics like Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way and Brenda Ueland’s If You Want to Write. It is that good. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves self-help, personal growth, the psychology of creativity, personal development, and inspiring nonfiction that will really light a fire under you to change your life.

I enjoy the philosophy behind Jacob’s writing. I do not enjoy books that assign projects. That is just me…would have been closer to five stars if the book stayed strictly inspirational

Words.....a gift for some, an enigma for others such as myself and so I can only hope my words express the beauty and importance of this book.

I am fascinated by the "idea" of creativity while feeling that I am always somehow on the outside of it. Writing, creating art or music are things I am instinctively drawn to, but I have yet to move past the "deer in the headlights" type of fear that never fails to simultaneously appear. So, instead, I just decided I wasn't the "creative type", that instead I was a worker bee and this was my contribution to the world. The older I get, however, the more I realize that there is just something I need to express.....I have no idea what or in what format it will come. However, reading The Creative Cure has me excited to actually explore what this may be. In his book, Jacob Norby has eloquently described the connection between past trauma and our ability to feel joy and creativity and this is something that I had never before considered. But once my eyes were opened, well, it was like a giant lightbulb moment and I can see now all the times throughout my life that I have made myself smaller and smaller because of some negative event. All of us want to feel joy, right? If you are feeling that joy is somehow illusive and you can't quite get to the bottom of why that is, then this is book for you. It is a pathway....to yourself!

This is a good read for people longing for more beauty and creative juice in their life. It's a good discussion about how to tap into the inner spring of creativity. Good for beginners or creatives feeling dry or stuck. Good for people who see creativity as a spiritual practice.

I took time to read Jacob’s latest book after attending a conference he cohosted, The Gathering of The Creatives. Getting to know him was most definitely a highlight, and both divinely timed and guided.

In his writing, as in person, Jacob is breathtakingly vulnerable and brutally honest - you get to know him, admire him and be inspired by him all at once. He is a deep thinking spiritual artist dedicated to peeling back and sharing every single layer in the process of his own self-discovery and personal growth. If witnessing that intrigues you, this book will make your heart sing, as it did for me. Jacob gives you homework and processes that will act like a backhoe in helping you to dig deep and get to the good stuff in your spiritual growth process. To be clear, this is neither a quick fix nor a panacea, rather it’s a very bright guiding light on your path to discovering your own creative essence, a trip always worth the time and effort invested. So, grab your favorite pens, a beautiful journal worthy of capturing your personal gems, and prepare to be amazed and inspired as you embark upon or continue your own journey of self-discovery to meet your inner muse. She’s patiently awaiting your arrival!
