This book was ok. The world building was good and the mystery was great. Most of the novel centered on the heroine solving her own murder but I personally would have liked a faster build up of a Scooby gang. More dialogue and interaction, between characters would have added some interest to the story. Also the fact that a Vampire Lord had time/inclination to follow a lowly detective around rang a little false to me.
Not sure if I will buy the next book.

Emma Bellamy is a London detective-in-training and gets assigned to the Supe Squad for her last assignment before her exam. The Supe Squad is where screw-ups are sent as it is a nothing posting as the supernatural community polices itself. She gets brutally murdered on her second day on the job but wakes up 12 hours later in the morgue. She realizes that she might more than human and now has to solve her own murder before it happens again.

There was a lot to like about this book. London makes such a great setting for an Urban Fantasy novel. Emmy’s character is likable, and the supporting cast are interesting. The pace of the novel is good and will have you turning the page to find out more (I finished it in one sitting). The book is firmly Urban Fantasy as the romance in the book is kept to a minimum.

The one thing I didn’t like was the ending. The ending to the main plot was great and felt right but the final ending to another subplot felt far-fetched and a reach. I’m being vague here to avoid spoilers.

Overall, the book was a solid read and I look forward to reading more in the series.

During COVID lockdown I've struggled to be engaged in new authors. Frankly even some of my favourites aren't holding my interest.
I stumbled across this book and decided to give it a shot. And I am so glad I did. I like the character Emma, she seems relatable and real. She's not perfect, she makes mistakes, but I like how her personality and interactions with others are portrayed.
I enjoyed the world building, learning about the different supernatural groups.As an avid fantasy/paranormal reader, I felt like it was obvious what Emma is, but I am enjoying the journey of her learning about herself. Already ordered book 2 and 3!

I loved this book! Just the right amount of intruige, suspense, events and conflict to keep you interested and guessing what would happen next. You fall in love and sympathize with the main character, finding yourself rooting for her and the supporting character. Great read.
