Delightful story, well written, well paced, with pleasant characters, interesting conflicts and fascinating setting...this text avoids the overt sex scenes, which makes it easier to enjoy than some of the others in the connected cycle...this keeps a cool polite tone throughout...good stuff!
I had a hard time engaging with the characters and the plot. For much of the book, I had the feeling that I was observing what was happening through a gauzy curtains - a bit foggy, the outlines are there, but detail and crispness are lacking and the “coloring” of the characters and story felt washed out. I pushed myself to get through it but it didn’t pull me in at all. Part of that may be because there is no back context provided. I haven’t read any of the others in this series and tried this one specifically because it promised that the books could be read in any order. Maybe they can, but I had no sense of context or grounding in terms of world-building. Even the major issue that was the reason for Vivian going to the mansion to begin with was really just a quick flash in the pan - over and done with in the space of a short chapter. The book could also benefit from a thorough reading by an editor as there were many sentence fragments and broken ideas throughout which also contributed to the lack of connection for me. All in all, it just wasn’t the book for me.
An enjoyable mystery and view into the Fatae mentioned in other books, but the romance did not catch on for me. Rather disappointing as I like to see later in life romances. Enjoyable, but definitely not a top book of Albion.
I didn't love the protagonists to start with, especially Vivian, and for ~2/3 of the book there wasn't much to suggest they'd end up together. They grew on me though, and it was another delightful foray into magical Albion.
