To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.
It's a 4-star book for me book, but this edition loses another star because it has stripped out the Hispanic elements of the original. Julián is now Julian, his abuela is his Nana, and 'mijo' has turned into 'honey'. For a book that celebrates diversity, this erasure of Hispanic culture and language is pretty disappointing!
Beautifully illustrated but it's not really a story, just a minimal amount of dialogue. My little ones didn't understand or enjoy it all, I had to tell them the story while they looked at the pictures instead. Liked the concept but wasn't for us.
The book has a lovely message and beautifully illustrated. I wouldnt recommend it for bedtime story, just too short for my 6 year old and deffo wont be a book we'd reach for time and time again. Disappointed after reading all the lovely reviews.
The story is cute, but the book itself seemed likely used but may have just been poorly cared for while in storage before sale. It’s a gift for my son, so I wouldn’t bother returning, but if this was a gift for someone outside of my family I would have been embarrassed at the concept of giving what looks like a used item.
There are too many pages that are just pictures with no words. And when you're reading a book like that outloud to a three-year-old, it's just awkward. And there's like 4 or 5 spreads with no words. There's plenty of opportunity to explain more and tell more of the story rather than just images (though the artwork and images are just beautiful!).
This is a nice book with pretty pictures and a good message that boys can be mermaids if they'd like to. It's not great for a toddler age 20 months because it's more of a picture book (where he can rip the pages) without much dialogue to intrigue him. Right now he's not too interestedested in it but maybe in the future he'll like it more.
