Cornelia Gamlem have become a master story teller by bringing out live stories for the darker/ grey side of Humans at work.

Tales which talk about the ludicrous situations at work, the escapade of Employees having sex in the conference room to Bad Bosses to Fantasies to Criminal Minds to dealing with Slipping & Sliding.

Insightful authors giving us a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes. This is a great book for HR professionals who are just starting their career, but also those that have done the job long enough to have a good laugh on some parts and recognize some of their own challenges.
While you can learn, and find solutions to issues, it is ethical, considerate, fun, sometimes sad, but it is a book like non-other and I highly recommend reading it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An HR Book For The Rest of Us!

I’ve spent my career in operations. HR books are usually for HR folks. They have laws and rules, labor standards, and company policies, I assume. I assume because I've never actually read one.

But this one is different! This is about real people in real situations. Now the names have been changed to protect the innocent, and maybe the guilty, but you’ll get all the details and it’s pretty amazing. It’s great fun, funny and sometimes sad, and you’ll have trouble putting it down.

My sense of HR has always been that they enforce the rules. There’s black and white, and if you cross the line you’re in trouble. But that’s not the way it is. This book shows that there may be black and white at the edges, but everything in between are shades of gray, in more ways than one. There’s a very interesting story involving a pool table, but I'm not a spoiler, so you have to read it yourself.

Seriously, this is a book recounting real events that show the breadth of situations HR professionals deal with. First, I was amazed at all the ways people manage to get into situations that involve HR. Second, it’s in the details where HR professionals make the difference. Offenses that I would have terminated for turn out to be situations that may be in poor taste, but nothing you can fire someone over.

If you’re a manager, you need to read this book. It won’t make you an HR pro, but it will give you a new appreciation for the job they do and how nuanced the issues become. More importantly for those of us not in HR, you’ll get a much better feel for when you need to call in the professionals. You do not want to be on the wrong side of an employment law suit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, insightful stories about HR & operations

Great read. I laughed out loud a few times, and it gave me a lot of insights into what HR professionals work through on a daily basis. The stories are well written, easy to read, and would make a great comic book/graphic novel or TV show, which makes it stand out from the ordinary business book full of case studies (though, it is chock full of lessons). Also if you've wondered what the outer boundaries of behavior in the workplace are...this book certainly answers that question!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected - Better!

I've spent over 30 years in HR and have had many 'They Did What' episodes. My first assumption by the title was that this would be a list of how ugly things could be, but this had so much humor and 'what could you do to handle it' stories. This was a very clever effort to take real life stories and weave them into a realistic situations in a plausable business. I have no doubt that the stories are true (I've seen similar and worse), but they were nicely framed in a way that lets you feel that you can handle what was laid out. Worth buying, a lively read.

I bought this book because it sounded like a fun read. And it was! I laughed out loud over and over while reading. What surprised me was how much I learned about HR. I did not realize the scope of what an HR professional might have to handle. I highly recommend this book for managers and HR professionals, and of course, people like me who just want a good laugh.

This is the book every HR professional threatens to write--Gamlem and Mitchell actually did it. Real life situations are depicted that most HR professionals encounter but are not sure how to approach in a respectful yet professional way. This book offers insightful, ethical advice for not just HR professionals but for all those involved in resolving these issues.

This book is an excellent resource for any one who has leadership or HR responsibility. While there is not a road map to dealing with complex people situations, this book provides actual examples of specific issues and how the issues were resolved. The authors did an excellent job in capturing both the challenge and the resolution.
