5.0 out of 5 starsI've never read anything like this
Reviewed in Canada on February 15, 2022
I just finished "Iron Widow" this morning and I can't stop thinking about it. It was so bold, so refreshing and horrifying all at once. I can't remember the last time I was so hooked on a novel and had to physically stop myself from reading the whole thing in one sitting. This is the kind of book where I stop and go: "Where has this been all my life??" Apart from the fictional world feeling so real and vivid, I loved how the author cleverly and fluidly addressed elements of social justice without sacrificing any of the overall story. Zetian is a fierce, flawed and unbelievably strong female protagonist; the kind I wish I had in my books when I was younger. I think my only complaint with the novel is that I think it's just a little TOO intense for YA readers, but that's just my opinion. I also didn't like how the blurb on the inside of the jacket cover reveals a major spoiler in the first half of the story. If you decide to read "Iron Widow" (and you should!) my one suggestion would be DO NOT read the inside of the jacket cover if you want to avoid all spoilers. Overall, a flipping incredible read! I sure hope a sequel is on the way!

2.0 out of 5 starsProblematic Feminism and Short on Details
Reviewed in Canada on January 10, 2022
I keep waffling… two stars, three stars? I mean it’s YA/teen and it fits the genre and target audience well; but sadly Iron Widow is mediocre at best. It comes off as a teenage soap opera that has: boxy characters, too many twists, not enough explanation of what is happening (if you’re going to write fantasy/sci-fi then expect readers to want to understand what is happening please), and is frankly obnoxious and preachy.
On the flip-side it’s also: immensely readable, fast-paced (in an omg what a train wreck kind of way), and with more over-the-top twists people are likely to love (seriously might as well have the line “Luke, I am your father” or “It was Earth all along”) written into the narrative. I know many will love it. But just like Twilight, I would bet money, it will not stand the test of time and the writing is not good enough to have any lasting power. A second read of Iron Widow will bring it to its knees for most readers as they realize it’s: contrived, poorly explained, badly written, and just rife with issues regarding its use of: feminism (which should be about equality not power), vengeance, intellect (if I’m supposed to think our lead gal is brilliant then I’m sorry to say, even with her bit of character growth, she really isn’t (what she is: obnoxious, shallow, and power hungry), and blatant male archetypal characters (her men all fit perfectly in a cookie cutter persona) which is ironic given one of the main themes is how women don’t just fit into one or two molds like the patriarchy seems to prefer us in. Oh, and there is a love triangle; although ironically the romance is very well handled and easily the best written narrative of the whole story.

If you want to get an idea of the type of attitude you will get from the lead gal here read the acknowledgements at the back. There are no spoilers. You’ll get a sense of the type of bragging and (frankly) immature tones that exist in the novel. From comments like how her (previously unsupportive) family can serve her fruit on a plate to the bragging that she now was a big multi-book deal (this is her debut novel), it’s apparent that the arrogance and immaturity of her lead girl is really a big reflection of her own thoughts and views. Obviously this isn’t surprising; all authors write from their own place in the word. It’s just unfortunate that a number of teens will gobble up the themes of hatred and revenge thinking they are just being feminist and getting retribution for what should be theirs). If you’re under 20, and love this, give it ten years, read it again and then let’s talk. I bet your opinion will have drastically changed.

Maybe this review is just a showing of my age (I realized I’m more than old enough to be the young authors mother, ack!) but I love lots of YA/teen books and this just isn’t one of them.
My suggestions to read instead of Iron Widow (and I’m sad to say that as Zhao is a young Canadian author I wish I could endorse) would include: The Last Namsara by (another fellow Canadian) Kristen Ciccarelli, Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim, or A Curse so Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer.

Please note: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This is an honest and unbiased review.

3.0 out of 5 stars A fun start to a new series
Reviewed in Canada on September 21, 2021
Zetian, an 18 year old, signs up to be a concubine with the single-minded goal of killing the pilot who murdered her sister. Zetian accomplishes this mission very quickly and, inadvertently, finds out she is more powerful than she ever imagined. The world Zetian lives in operates on keeping women “in their place”, and they are not about to change that system. However, they will not hesitate to set the odds against her by pairing her with Pilot Li Shimin, a violent and murderous boy.

Together Zetian and Li Shimin are coerced to join the war against the Hunduns, an invasive robot-like species that continues to attack their world. Zetian makes it her personal mission to find out the real reason girls are being oppressed and to stop more girls from being slaughtered in this war.

According to the author, they followed in the footsteps of traditional Chinese writers and took a real historical figure (Regnant Wu), placed her in the future as a teen, and added fantasy to create this unique story.

The reader only gets a glimpse of this world and it is all from Zetian’s perspective. I am hoping that the world and its politics and the enemy “invaders” will be expanded upon in the second instalment. I noticed some similarities in this with the Stormlight Archives series by Brandon Sanderson. If you’re caught up on that series, you’ll probably notice the similarities too.

Despite some minor quibbles, I am excited to see where this series goes.

First thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an arc of this book. Iron Widow is the first book in a new serie by Xiran Jay Zhao. The cover of the book is really beautiful. I had a bit of a hard time to get into it but that might be because I don't really read sci-fi books.

Zetian is 18 years old when she offer herself as a concubine-pilot. Her sister was killed and for her its the only way to get revenge, to assassinate the ace male pilot. In Huxia, the boys pair up with girls to pilot Chrysalises, giant transforming robots that can battle the mecha aliens that attack them. Often leading into the dead of the girl from the mental strain but as long as the guy live, who cares. But Zetian will have her revenge not in the way she was planning. She will kill the pilot throught the psychic link unarmed. Now people call her the Iron Widow.

3.0 out of 5 stars Tired and predictable Hero story

The, what seems obligatory nod, to being PC. Showing powerful women as the worst type of man. A Fantasy version of the Tranformers franchise which, i guess the publishers are hoping for. Okay but far from ground breaking, a money spinner? Probably. Literary genius?… well thats up to you 🤗

3.0 out of 5 stars A strong feminist sci-fi story
Reviewed in Australia on December 23, 2021

A girl born poor, rebels against everything to avenge her sister’s death. The concepts that underpin this story world are borrowed, hacked and reformed into a narrative about choices, inequality and perceptions. The main character, her sheer force of will and power is breath taking.

The men in the story I feel are mere plot devices, to serve the main female character— and you know, that’s okay. But I wished that their relationships were more poetic, heart rendering, like I wish I could care more deeply about them. And I think that’s where the book lost me— in the relationships, in the humanity of their corrections. So much of who they were, were metaphors for something else.

In the end, maybe because she was so unconventional, maybe because an important point was always being made, maybe because the book was imbued with so much rage & sheer unending pain— I didn’t like the main character by the end of the book.

This book needs to be read & celebrated— its amazing in what it says & achieves. But for me I could’ve used a bit more beauty & stillness in it too.

The world building was really good, and the characters were complex and interesting. The storyline was pretty great… until the ending. I mean the ending is clever and all, but not what I wanted to read. All that fight and fury and struggle…. just to get that ending. SMH.

It’s a decent enough novel, but it never really hits its stride.

The poly relationship seems more token than anything, Fight scenes are good but not exceptional. The main character’s voice is solid.

I don’t regret having read it, and I’ll probably get the sequel just to see if any aspects have improved.

3.0 out of 5 stars A great read but a terrible and cliché end

Ending a book is hard. Stephen King is rather notorious for his awful endings, even going so far as to put a warning page to 'stop now' if you enjoyed the story and didn't want it ruined by the ending in one of his books. A warning everyone should listen to.

Iron Widow has the same problem but worse. This is the first book by a first-time author and it's an incredibly easy read. The action is amazing and descriptive and everything flows so well that you can picture this being made into a movie with ease. The characters are interesting enough with everyone's motivation clear and the snippets of world-building adding a lot to it all.

The author even does a lot of setup with great payoff. This is done multiple times and reaches a crescendo that would make you want to stand up and give a round of applause. This is all up until the end and the epilogue.

As the book reaches its end it starts to rush there. Characters start acting out of character as they need to get things wrapped up. Cliche plot points that actively detract from the story get thrown in to explain things better not explained. Cliches that don't even need to be introduced are also added for the sake of drama but come off as cheap sequel bait. Endings are hard to do, and this one was overstuffed.

I recommend this book and highly recommend never reading its epilogue for maximum enjoyment.

I enjoy the entire premise of this story. It took a second for me to get on board but once I was I was strapped in along for the ride. I love Shimin and Yizih. Now Our titular iron widow on the other hand…. She’s just a lot. Which I guess is the point but wow. Yeah. Also that ending hmmmm. I am unending interested in seeing where Zhao continues to go with this though. Very much a girl boss novel

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun read - but it isn’t original

I’m not a critic in the sense that I go into books looking for its flaws or to criticize it, and this is a fun read! However, I was put off by the drastic copying of various plot lines from Darling in the Franxx, including most character arcs and even the plot twist at the end of the novel. I think it’s one thing to be inspired by the likes of Darling in the Franxx and Pacific Rim, but it’s another to have it be a carbon copy with different characters and locations.
