I first heard about this book on a podcast on the L as I was decompressing after annual review season. It intrigued me enough to remember it next cycle and download it. Marcus passionately escorts you through a journey of self discovery and equips you with so much richness and data on how the paradigms at work, our relationships, and school need to change. I felt seen and in turn passionate about this new way to view the world

5.0 out of 5 stars There was my life before this book, and my life after. An invaluable, life-changing read.

This book will bring all aspects of your life to one. Whether you are spiritual in nature or not, this book is not just about bringing love into work (work being anything of value we contribute), or managing the amount of work in love to make it more balanced. However, it's about connecting the two, and realizing that they are not such a long distance walk from each other. With Marcus's help, you will read sentences that you've been waiting a lifetime to hear: That your unique contribution, and your individual loves and what Marcus calls "red threads" are your ticket to a happier, more visceral experience in your own life. You will learn how to find what it is that you love to do, and how to weave it into contribution. All of this is presented both with data and research from over the last 20 years of Marcus's career as well as through his own personal experience to give examples and make it more tangible for understanding.

For me, Love + Work contains some of the most invaluable lessons. It has transformed my life in more ways than one. That's the beauty of this book--that there are so many ways that it can apply both personally and professionally. It's not a book only for organization leaders or company executives, it's for all people who love and all people who work.

For those who are career searching, use this book as a guide. As someone who is currently scavenging, this book could not have come at a better time. There are amazing interview questions for companies you are interviewing with, and advice on how to talk about your loves and strengths. You will feel better knowing this information walking into a new company or career because it will help ease your anxiety in knowing the "next right move" to make.

We deserve the chance to "love what we do" by actually knowing HOW to find love in what we do at all. We deserve to know ourselves as individuals more intimately, and how to advocate for our loves. We deserve the chance to scavenge and create the roles that will bring us the most alive. Give yourself that chance, and start this book today. I say it to anyone who will listen--but there was my life before this book, and my life afterwards. I wouldn't and won't be going back to how I viewed myself and the world of work before, and you shouldn't either.

Many thanks to Marcus and his team, I am so beyond grateful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible lessons in identifying what makes you shine in work and then creating a path towards this

I have followed Marcus’ work for years. His book ‘Now discover your strengths” unlocked my understanding of the importance of identifying your strengths and deliberately crafting a job role, which optimizes these strengths. I followed his teaching for years and applied the principles in my life and in my own company, with real life, measurable success.
I started a job with a new company, in a foreign country, on a new continent. Did I have the skill set to do the job demanded of me? Absolutely. Did I love every day and every task? Absolutely NOT. I knew why it needed to be done and this was a critically important foundation. My mindset accepted this but for almost 2 years, it was incredibly hard, often draining and emotionally challenging. Why? Not just because of all the newness, but because the job didn’t present the right ecosystem for me to use my innate talents, my ‘red threads’ in adequate quantity. On many days, there was no glimpse at all of a “red thread” opportunity but as Marcus points out, no job presents a ‘red quilt’. No job presents an environment where you absolutely love every single activity, every situation, every moment. I recognized this and thankfully knew what I needed to work towards and steer, in order to create a work environment in which the ‘red threads’ could fill at least 20% of my day. Marcus encourages us to take the time to learn what feelings and tasks and situations and events in a job, magnetize us, invigorate us and when doing them, often almost automatically, your soul feels ignited in the presence of those ‘red threads’. And as you naturally lean into them, you thrive and get better at them which leads to competence, confidence and flair, success and forward propulsion. We shine when we do what we love. Love + Work teaches you to take ownership of the process to find your own ‘red threads’ and to be deliberate about working them into your job. I was very goal driven to structure my job so that I have an abundance of ‘red thread’ opportunities now. My work is thrilling and Mondays are golden. Marcus, your work is extraordinary and your new book emphasizes that each person needs to own the process of finding their ‘red threads’ if we want to at least ne happy in our work and more so if we choose to shine and grow in our work. 5 stars for this one!

I’m an Executive and Teamwork Coach and find this book beautiful. The CEO of company who I’m working with said he wants to incorporate this book into the work I’m doing with his leadership team. Wow, it’s an awesome book. And I’m so impressed that the CEO makes this mandatory reading for all his leaders. So cool. Can’t wait to incorporate some of the exercises into my work with them. It was also fun to realize that I have had the pleasure of being in Coaching School (CTI) with his fiancĂ© Myshel Romans who is, of course, an amazing human. :-) - Katrin Windsor

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book from one who knows the data

I started a consulting career 20 years ago in part because of Buckingham's book "First, know all the rules". So inspiring. His last book is brilliant when it comes to understand what makes on more resilient, performant, healthy and happy. The book is interwoven with his personal story, I guess few on Earth have seen more relevant data than M. Buckingham and he has the courtesy to tell us what is crap and what we should retain. And the last chapter on Colleges / Education etc. is a bit of a surprise (What has education to do with organizations) but a must read for all Bildung interested parties. For all of us interesting in improving their contribution and leadership in teams - a very rewarding read! And my first post on Amazon since it started.

Have always been a fan of Marcus and his work. His effortless writing style which is backed by clearly outlined research and methodological approach to problem solving has always really appealed to me. From the outset this book came across a bit different. A bit more personal and introspective while still maintaining the hallmarks that I had come to value and appreciate in his prior works. Not only was it personal in how he presented his feelings and experiences on the topic but also what it inspired within me. Introspection regarding the reason why we do what we do; how we earn a living, associate our value within the context of our profession and society seemed to really strike a cord with me. Particularly given what we've all been through the past 2 years.

I highly recommend this to anyone that is seeking to better understand themselves and how to navigate the tricky balance of finding success AND fulfillment in their personal/professional lives while discovering themselves in the process. My lasting lesson is that we are all human and with that comes passion, ambition and love. Not only is that ok, but we should be curious and seek to articulate it so that we can purposefully apply it. I will endeavor to look within more and understand better the things in my life that make it worth living instead of just enduring.

Thank you Marcus for all of the work that went into pulling this project together, for the courage it took share so many personal thoughts and moments in your life with us so that we could use it as a reflection and inspiration in our own lives and ultimately for the quality and rigor within which you go about putting out bodies of work that we can reference and share with others we care about.

Cheers.

I always look forward to reading a new book from Marcus Buckingham, as I know he will never rehash old ideas or business maxims.
I have gained tremendous insights through the years from his books, “First break all the rules” and “Now discover your strengths.” Helped make me a more compassionate team member and improved my ability to hire talented managers.
And we are using his strategies from “Nine lies about work” to improve our communication with team members, while shedding tired outdated and demotivating performance reviews, replacing them with energizing “check ins” where we can offer support and coaching while staying focused on what our team members do well.
This new book “love + work” is his most personal and focuses on how to find love at and in work. And he takes a completely new and different approach to the subject then what you would expect. You will discover your “wyrd” And find your “red threads” and most importantly for me, understand that “your strengths are not what you’re good at”.
Even for those like me who already have found love and passion in their work, there is still wisdom found here, like this from page 227:
“If you are a team leader, you must be a bringer of trust into your team. Do your check ins each week, make few and small commitments and keep them all, never talk negatively about one team member to another: always do for people what is right for them even if that is not always what they want: share in detail with each one what you have come to see and learn about them. These are the sorts of actions, that little by little, build trust on your team and bring love in”.
Simple and powerful advice that will make us better leaders and help each of us find more love at and from work.
