3.0 out of 5 starsWhat's a twin to do?
Reviewed in Canada on February 2, 2022
When chef Charlie Goodwin suffers a head injury when a shelf falls on her at work, she sustains a concussion, but also loses her sense of taste and smell…and that puts a real crimp in her job as a baking competition judge. And her success as a judge could lead to her own show on the channel. What’s she going to do?

Charlie calls on her identical twin Cass to come to LA and fill in for her on the show until she gets her senses of taste and smell back. Cass, who runs the busy family bakery in the small mountain town they call home, is struggling with the annual Christmas rush as she tries to get her ex to accept they’re over, so she jumps at the chance to trade lives for a few days. What an opportunity to experience the glitz and glamour of her twin’s life in LA.

And so the plan is in place. As the twins try to negotiate each other’s lives, there are plenty of wrenches thrown into the mix, from a missing phone to a handsome physician assistant to a hunky firefighter.

The Holiday Swap was a sweet read. There were not a lot of surprises and some things that were quite predictable, but the characters and the challenges each twin faced as they negotiated the other’s life were well written.

4.0 out of 5 stars A charming holiday read

Charlie Goodwin is a chef on a reality baking show.  When she suffers a head injury on the set and realizes she’s lost her senses of taste and smell, she knows that her success as a reality show baking judge is on the line. She contacts her identical twin Cass who helps run the family’s bakery business and pleads for her to switch places with her until the end of the current shooting schedule.  Needing an escape from her own life, Cass wholeheartedly agrees.

Neither sister knows all that’s in store for her in their swapped life.  It’s the week before Christmas and life are stressful. Why not complicate it a bit more by finding love?  Will the sisters be able to pull off this swap without any disasters?

This book was highly entertaining and I enjoyed it.  Books set around food always entice me and The Holiday Swap had my mouth watering!  The recipes all sounded delicious and had me building my list of Christmas baking in the months ahead.

The identical twins swapping lives is a favourite trope of mine and this one was well executed. The characters were likeable and well developed. The reader is provided with a good sense of the similarities and differences between Charlie and Cass.  I appreciated the theme of venturing outside of your comfort zone to find the life you’re looking for.  Humour is used wisely throughout.  All in all the book is sweet, full of Christmas coziness, and a joy to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Holiday Read

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a review copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.

This book is so cute and sweet! It's like a Hallmark movie in book form. Grab your blanket, your hot cocoa and get cozy because this book is sure give you the warm and fuzzies!

Charlie Goodwin is a co-star of her own reality baking show. One day she has a mishap that results in a bad concussion causing her to temporarily lose her taste and smell. Cass, Charlie's twin sister, lives in the girl's hometown helping their parents run the family bakery. She has lots to take care of with the days leading up to Christmas which is made even harder by an ex that just won't take the hint. Charlie convinces Cass to switch places with her while they sort out each others problems. Cass will take over for Charlie on the show, while Charlie will deal with Cass' ex-boyfriend once and for all. Can they pull it off or will everything turn to disaster right before Christmas?

Charlie and Cass are such lovable main characters. I adored their relationship and their willingness to jump into each others lives to help one another. There is something about them that is just so wholesome and lovable. The cast of characters was the perfect size for the story. Each character was needed, perfectly placed and expertly written.

The story was truly wonderful and the writing was simply superb. There was the perfect amount of conflict and resolution. It had a steady flow with no drags or info dump. The Holiday Swap is the perfect story to just snuggle up and enjoy.

If you're a fan of wholesome clean Christmas romances, give this a try. If you're a fan of stories where identical twins pull a switcharoo for awhile, give this one a try. If you want just a nice family Christmas story, give this one a try. Seriously, give it a try.

4.0 out of 5 stars Holiday Rom Com

Charlie is a Chef on the show Sweet & Salty, which is coming down to the last 12 days of production. There's a chance that she can become a solo host on the next show if her co-host Austin doesn't get the part. Her co-host has been annoying to deal with from day one with his condescending nature. Unfortunately, Charlie ends up with a concussion and ends up going to the hospital and has lost the sense of smell and taste and can't figure out how she's going to survive the remaining filming days unless her identical twin agrees to step in and pretends to be her. Charlie's sister Cassie agrees to cover for her. Fortunately her sister is also a pastry chef so should be able to step in seamlessly with a bit of help from her makeup artist and best friend Priya. Charlie goes home and takes over getting things ready at the family bakery for the holidays where there are orders and traditions to be ready at their family bakery. Cassie has been trying to break up with Brett for months but he doesn't seem willing to accept her answers, so Cassie hopes that Charlie will be able to get through to Brett that he needs to back off and leave her alone and respect that she isn't interested in marrying him or dating him any longer loud and clear.

This is a feel good light romcom. I tend to have lower expectations for this genre so if it makes me smile and keeps reading I am happy. It's a cute story with twins swapping lives - it is completely unrealistic and is a feel good distraction that supports the happy holidays genre that you wait to see how everyone gets their happily ever after. The book delivers as a quick paced read and goes back and forth between the two sisters' lives and switched lives, I laughed a few times and smiled through the book. I would give it 7.75/10.

3.5 stars rounded up

When baking show cohost Charlie Goodwin suffers a head injury that alters her taste and smell, she calls upon her twin, Cass to switch places with her. Cass agrees as she wants a break from running the family bakery in their small mountain town.

Of course no good can come from switching lives with someone, even if it is your identical twin. Enter in miscommunication, accidental crushes and lots of mayhem, this book is a heartwarming and delicious holiday read.

This book played like a Hallmark Christmas movie. It was cute, charming and festive. It was full of likeable characters, and some not so likeable characters. It was quaint, cozy and witty.

There were however some frustrating moments that would have been completely avoidable if people would just learn to communicate. I know, it’s just a novel, but ugh. It irked me so much.

There were parts that were a tad slow throughout the story and then the ending was a bit rushed. I would have enjoyed the book a bit more had some of the mundane parts of the story not been in it and the ending a bit slower.

All in all this was a sweet and delightful holiday read.

Charlie Goodwin is a judge for a TV reality baking show, but when she gets hit on the head on set, she gets a concussion, along with losing her senses of taste and smell. She needs to keep this job because it could lead to another cooking show. Meanwhile, in their hometown, her twin sister Cass is struggling to run their family’s bakery while also dealing with a toxic ex-boyfriend who won’t go away. Charlie and Cass decide to trade places so that Cass can properly judge the baking show and Charlie can use her confidence to run the bakery and deal with Cass’s ex. Soon after they switch lives, Charlie falls for Jake, the new firefighter in town, and Cass likes the physicians assistant Miguel. Now they not only have to run each other’s lives, but also figure out how to start a relationship while living as their sister.

I’ve always loved stories about twins. The Mary-Kate and Ashley movies and TV shows, and The Parent Trap movies were my favourites as a kid. This situation made for the perfect switch. Cass and Charlie were both experienced bakers, but Charlie’s sense of taste and smell were so important for judging the TV show that she couldn’t keep her job if she stayed there. They were both able to make changes in each other’s lives, though not all of them were for the better.

This was a fun holiday read. There were lots of baked treats, so make sure you have some handy while reading. The Christmas scenes were brief, as it was mostly about the days leading up to Christmas. However it still had a festive feel!

The Holiday Swap is a fun holiday rom com!

Thank you Penguin Random House Canada for providing a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

2.0 out of 5 stars like Hallmark channel Christmas movies? here's the book for you.
Reviewed in Canada on October 11, 2021
Definitely don't take my rating to heart if this sounds like your thing. This just isn't my cup of tea.

Right off the bat, I want to say, if you're a fan of the seasonal Netflix and or Hallmark channel holiday movies? You'll probably love this. Enjoy those Vanessa Hudgens twin/look-alike/whatever swap concept films? This is for you. Added bonus if you also love The Great British Bake Off. And yet another bonus is this also manages to sprinkle in a small-town setting and vibe. THE HOLIDAY SWAP is doing pretty much everything, and anything, it possibly can. Sadly, though, this did not make my Grinchy heart grows any sizes bigger.

If you can suspend some disbelief that grown humans (even identical ones!) would think it likely they can switch lives for the course of the week when disaster strikes (I'm not even going to touch on the recklessness of not taking a concussion seriously.. I'm not.. nope), and have no issue adjusting despite the very different lives they lead, you can probably get on with this more than I could (thankfully they do later address the folly in thinking this would be possible, but..). Added tension and hijinks ensue when they immediately stumble in their ability to adjust to their new surroundings and are unable to get ahold of each other.. and I mean, other than dealing with frustrating co-hosts of a reality tv show and an ex who can't get the hint, that's as high stakes as it gets. This isn't looking to stress you out by any means, it really is here for a good wholesome holiday time.

Beyond not getting on with most of the aforementioned tropes and premise, though, I'll admit there was not enough to differentiate the twins in personality or narrative voice. One is supposed to be more traditionally small town and perhaps a little bit of a pushover/people pleaser (though we only see that particular aspect when she's dealing with her ex which, ugh, I disliked that whole plot point) and the other is glamourous and successful and take-charge.. except, again, with maybe two exceptions we don't see this really come to the fore. They were both into baking, they were both workaholics, making them well.. sorry for the pun, but, identical; circumstances notwithstanding.

Naturally, each sister has a romance that is initially complicated by the existing way the love interests were known to the other sister, but, surprising no one, it all works out happily ever after in the end.

THE HOLIDAY SWAP has the excitement, and conflict, of the GBBO-like competition, a potential baked-goods chain looking to elbow in on the small town bakery's turf, in addition to head injuries and some ruined baking, and, of course, the sisters have to come clean just in time for Christmas. Will a miracle prevail and they will be forgiven for their trickery? Will they each get what they set out to achieve with their swap.. and maybe learn something about themselves along the way? I'm sure you know the answer to those questions but, either way, I won't ruin the surprise.

This has so much that I know so many people will love. And I hope you do. But if, like me, this isn't quite your jam? I don't think this will be memorable or enough of a stand-out to change your mind about the premise.
