5.0 out of 5 starsGreat book
Reviewed in Canada πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ on October 4, 2016
Quite good. I would rate it 4.5/5 since it's not my favourite of Liz Greene's books, but this book definitely helps one understand the influence of Saturn, which seems to be quite underrated and not fully understood in common astrology. I learned a lot from reading this, I would recommend it. The 4 part series by Liz Greene and Howard Sasportas on Dynamics of the Unconscious, Inner Planets, Luminaries, etc. are really amazing I would recommend them first before reading this one in general... Unless you really have a big desire for a Saturn house by house, sign by sign specific analysis.

3.0 out of 5 starsAfter being immersed in learning Hellenistic Astrology, this modern reference is hard to go back to.
Reviewed in Canada πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ on May 4, 2022
I appreciate the reputation this book has had on a generation of astrologers. However, after taking up deep immersion into Hellenistic astrology (via Robert Schmidt, Demetra George, Chris Brennan), I honestly had a hard time continuing with the book. The significations of Signs = Houses are conflated throughout - something that's been taken for granted repeatedly in much of modern western astrology (out of ignorance through no fault of anyone). The approach reflected in this book (and many like it) needs to be put into historical context as the conflation of signs and houses reflects a period before the original Hellenistic source texts were recovered through Project Hindsight's efforts. In essence, it reflects a stream of astrology in the west that was recovered based on incomplete information for understanding the distinction of the Signs and Houses and underlying conceptual frameworks that sit behind them.
I'm still on the lookout for books that don't repeat this conflation of Signs = Houses, but so far I'm having tough luck. Stephen Arroyo's books are excellent, but I haven't come across a book solely about Saturn written by him. If anyone reading this can give suggestions, please give me a poke!

4.0 out of 5 stars Saturn Himself would enjoy the book

Liz Greene explodes the caricature of Saturn as the gloomy cynical taskmaster who only joy is making people miserable. Please remember that Liz Greene does not write for the casual dilletante. Read the book deeply or do not read it at all.

4.0 out of 5 stars I thought this was a good book for what it is

I'm dabbling in astrology, and due to my own Saturn configurations, I thought this was a good book for what it is. I think it captures the spirit of all that Saturn represents and is a nice little guide map through Saturn, if you will -- breaking his influence down through the by sign, house, element, aspect, and a whole section on synastry. If you're into astrology and actively building a library, I think it adds value to your understanding of the subject. Other than my own personal ideological disagreements with Greene's viewpoints, and a general distaste for modern astrology, I felt I learned a lot and others can too, even if like me, you don't agree/like all of it. Her writing is very dense and smacks of early turn-of-the-century occultists' writings, so if you're familiar with the styles of, say, Dion Fortune or others from the time period, you should be okay. I don't mind it myself, I think people more used to reading pop astrology will have a more difficult time of it unless they're well read, so keep that in mind. I would think it should go without saying that this is not the book for a person who likes to read their daily horoscope in the newspaper and expects it to be that easily readable. You're going to have to, ha ha, bend to Saturn's discipline to appreciate it. ;)

4.0 out of 5 stars Glorious, but alas, too short.

There is little I feel I have to say about this book. It's a classic by a world-renoun astrologer--one of the most famous and well-respected of our time, and Greene's unparalleled insights here certainly do justice to her aforementioned reputation. I ordered this book off of Amazon.com and was somewhat taken aback upon peeling away the mailing slip to such a diminutive book, just shy of 200 pages. I was hoping for a book three times the size. Greene's apparent shortcuts begin with her skimping on any generalization of the topic in question with little introduction to the themes of Saturn, instead delving straight into Saturn's placement in the signs and houses. Likewise, she does not differentiate between Saturn's placement in the signs and houses, perferring to lump Saturn in Gemini together with Saturn in the Third (for example) in the same reading, insodoing cheating readers out of the nuances of each. Thankfully she graces us with a chapter on Synastry, but only goes so far as to the describe the surrounding aura of any given unspecified contact between a planet with Saturn (i.e. "Sun-Saturn contacts.") Perhaps if Greene had taken the time to run through each combination and permutation of Saturn-to-planet contacts in the realms of synastry, the natal chart, and by transit, as well as a distinction between its placement in the signs and the houses, the book would have spanned the 600 pages I had been so dearly anticipating.

I like how liz greene writes. With it being psychology based, it makes it believable. She says that god and the devil are internal conflicts, and we can learn with difficult uncomfortable aspects. Trying to understand how the world is for oneself, and why it is, how it is different between individuals.

New to the field of astrology, I was taken to a new level of appreciation and understanding by Liz Greene's interpretation of Saturn and his effect on the houses. This book was very insightful and profound. It is definitely a classic.
