Immediately after reading the first book, I saw this one and just had to get it.
It was just as intriguing as its partner.
Excellent author: relatable characters; exciting, simple, impactful stories.

3.0 out of 5 starsLiked this better than the first, and looking forward to the third!
Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on November 8, 2022
I liked this better than Before the Coffee Gets Cold, and I liked the little throwbacks to the stories in the first book sprinkled throughout. Again, I liked how the four stories in this book weren’t completely separate. Various little things overlapped, showing that even though they’re four different individuals’ stories, they aren’t all happening completely independently.

The ending of this book seemed like it would have been a good ending to the series, so I’m curious to see what will happen in the third book.

When we find the strength to reflect…

How did the book make me feel/think?

I needed this. We live in a topsy-turvy world. Depression and suffering are lurking on every corner. We often feel alone and as if we need to eat our emotions. We must remain strong, unflappable, and superhuman.

Are we doing life correctly?

Nobody knows.

I question my every step, breath, and decision.

Teardrops paint my shirt like bloodstains.

I hurt, I want the past to be just that, the past; it haunts me.

What if there was a place you could go to wash away your regrets and allow you to move forward with a fresh view and a bounce to your step?

Tales from the café by Toshikazu Kawaguchi (and the other books in this series) provide that escape. Only, it’s not an escape; it is a salve for the soul. Whether it is unrequited love or a decision you made that alters the course of life, Kawaguchi, with the utmost tenderness, delivers tears of joy as he helps us understand life is best lived and that the things that may haunt you the most are manageable.

When we find the strength to reflect, we might find warmth and understanding instead of the heavy burden of what if…

Interesting IDEA. Otherwise badly written, childish and repetitive. Sort if makes me think its an author publishing his own work because no one else would. Needs serious editing but then it would be a greeting card.

Fuzzy's Mom
4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting premise
Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on November 23, 2021
Princess Fuzzypants here: If there was a place where you could turn back time, would you go there? There is a cafe in Tokyo, hidden away, where urban legends say this can be done. Many of the people who seek it out go away once they learn there are some hard and fast rules, the biggest one being you cannot change anything that will affect the present. Since that would be the reason why most would want to turn back the clock, it reduces the number of patrons. There are other rules, including the need to return before a cup of coffee turns cold or be turned into a ghost. And the only person with whom you can visit is someone who has been to the cafe in their lifetime.

It is an interesting premise and has four tales of people who are willing to go back, who need to say or do something so that they can move on with their own lives. There is also an fascinating dynamic with the people who work in the cafe and their relationship with the “gift” they offer. The stories are bittersweet but moving. Four purrs and two paws up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Chance to Travel in Time Before Your Coffee Gets Cold

I enjoyed the first book in this series by Toshikazu Kawaguchi so much that I immediately grabbed the second, "Tales from the Cafe." The setting is an out-of-the-way cafe in Tokyo where people brave enough to sit in a particular chair and to drink a cup of coffee that must be poured by a woman member of the Tokita family only when the mysterious "woman in white" gets up once a day to go the bathroom, can visit the past, or even the future. The rules from Book 1, "Before Your Coffee Gets Cold," still apply. I recommend that readers tackle the books in order, because some action in Book 2 turns out to relate to events or people in Book 1. For example, readers will find out how the "woman in white" from Book 1 became a ghost. Will she ever have a chance to leave her "permanent" seat in the cafe? One prime rule about the time travel is that the short trip will not change anything from the past. If a person is dead today, for example, nothing a traveler can do in the past will change that. I love the characters for their sensitivity, their good heartedness and that they are willing to risk becoming a ghost if they do not finish their coffee before it gets cold. In this installment, four people take the plunge and emerge with a new outlook on life. This fantasy-filled book is a refreshing look at finding hope and leaving despair behind.

By far this was my favourite book from all 3 series. I'm waiting for the author to publish more currently. It's very easy to read, and I do get confused with the names probably because I read in one sitting. But if you're a person to read chapter a day, this one is for you guys.

Congratulations to the author and the translator for this masterpiece. I smiled and cried and couldn’t put it down until I finished it. Both books are great.
