Where this book excels is that it works to define a solid definition of what they are defining as IT strategy and its inter-relation with other corporate functions. These insights can be instantly applied to change how we think about IT and can leverage changing technologies and environments to achieve better productivity

5.0 out of 5 stars Understand IT and Digital Strategy at an Executive Level in One Quick Read

First, I absolutely love these quick guides. There is nowhere else you are able to level up so much in a short 2-3 hour read. In fact, regardless of your industry everyone needs to read this quick guide. The reason is, there is absolutely no industry that is not and will not be focused on Digital and IT Strategy in the 2020s. It is that important. It does not matter if you are new to the work force, middle management or an executive IT and Digital Strategy is that important for your career. You will come into contact with it, regardless of where you work. What is quite impressive about this quick guide is that it covers IT Strategy on a level I have never seen done before. Now it is not a detailed ‘how to’ implementation guide, but it doesn’t need to be.

The quick guide starts off with the true definition of IT and Digital Strategy. It is the best definition I have read and tiers it to corporate and business unit strategy in a way I have never seen articulated before. But it makes a lot of sense. IT is an enabler and must help the business units fulfil their strategy so that they can fulfil the corporate strategy. It a trickle up effect, so to speak. Additionally, words like “digital” are all to often thrown around in today’s business world, but no one has succinctly explained it like it is covered in this journal. For example, for anything to be digital it must exists in terms of bytes (1s and 0s). Now with that simple definition the guide moves on how to create a plan for controlling this flow of data and eventually generating a profit. Digital is usually thought of as B2C but this quick guide makes a strong case that this is way to narrow a definition and explains why that mindset will limit what companies can and should do.

For all of the above and more, I absolutely recommend this quick read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful context for digital & IT strategy

This book is designed to help a busy leader to understand digital & IT strategy planning very quickly. It is not an in-depth treatment of the subject, but merely an abbreviated version of the complementary Journal developed based on their many years of consulting experience with their clients. It starts by explaining what digital & IT strategy is, and differentiates between digitization and digitalization. They provide an example of developing and implementing a digital strategy. The book explains how digital & IT strategy is different than corporate and operations strategy. There is an example to illustrate the difference between a corporate and digital & IT strategy, and how the latter only exists to support the former. It includes examples of slide design you can use to plan strategy at your company, and shows in a high-level summary format how to formulate a vision for digital & IT and tie it in with the strategy development and then implementation. They include an example to provide guidance to consultants in how to structure and phase a study dealing with corporate strategy for technology companies. Overall, the book delivers useful context for anyone involved with developing and implementing a digital & IT strategy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Content flow

I purchased this Kindle version and started reading Truly well written and insightful. The author indeed has made great attempts to separate the wheat from the chaff. However the flow of content is where I found some concerns and sharing the same. #1. A true learner ( as against a reader) should get sufficient time to reflect upon each section. One needs time to touch upon various dimensions of a business and try and see how the information adapts. This can be done in two ways. One way is to provide some questions to ponder upon. Second provide a brief case of a small business , a boutique business or a mom and pop business and frame insightful questions. It will stimulate thinking and more importantly allow one to reflect.
Most examples the author has shared is indeed relevant. But post pandemic , it is the SME business that needs to thread and weave together - in some cases from scratch. The big entities as always can afford the cost of learning. The SME has just one shot. Therefore I recommend the author to take note of the observation.

To me this is a great book to be weighed in gold.

5.0 out of 5 stars The digital & IT strategy

When digital transformation has been well popularized in the business world nowadays, many local enterprises imagine that they can reach billions of consumers all over the world by building a brilliant app. Indeed, what they need is a digital & IT strategy serving corporate strategy, that brings them back to the business basics. Think of an app as a way of distribution, and then, what you have to do with your product ? (Can it be digitized ? Will it be well received by consumers overseas, considering the social / cultural / legal differences ? What different competitors will you face after digitalization ?...etc.) The book uses Boston Bugle as an example to illustrate all the strategic challenges ahead. At least, Boston Bugle can no longer be "Boston" after going digital. This book also talks about other issues like the relationship among corporate strategy, business strategy and digital & IT strategy for any businesses including technology companies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Understand how a company should prioritize and organize itself to be competitive

FC has released a lot of material on Corporate Strategy and Business Unit Strategy. This book is about jumping a level deeper into how you should organize the company's resources around these strategies. More specifically, what you should prioritize, how you do it with steps and guides, et cetera.

It is fair to say, that this book, like FC's other quick guide books, is exorbitantly valuable considering that you only need to invest a maximum of 2 hours to read the book.

It shares enough knowledge and insights for you to understand Digital & IT strategies more deeply than anyone else, which is the essence of learning and thinking on your own. You start to interpret business issues in a different and more refined way to eventually create additional value for your clients.

Without a doubt, this is a book worth reading several times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Digital Strategy is much more than having an app! Learn why here...

This book is quick and very valuable read for any executive who wants to get to grips on what digitisation means for their organisation and why the impact and implications of 'going digital' can create a powerful opportunity to gain competitive advantage.

The author lays out a very clear argument why developing a digital strategy needs to go much deeper than simply answering 'Can we turn (our off-line data or offering) into an app?'

Great read. Packed full of insights.

I have not encountered any book that has a better and simpler definition of digital strategy. We no longer have to confine ourselves into thinking that digitization can only happen in the final product. And by defining digital strategy appropriately, the possibilities are endless.
A terrific insight indeed.

The quick guide is a worthwile investment. An overview of the content can be found in the preview. The content itself was for me despite my professional and personal knowledge very valueable because it has given me a very structured overview of digital strategy with several practical real world examples.
